Hi guys, today I wanted to know what was the best game in your opinion that has the best story.
Max Payne 1 - it appealed to the gritty, film noir fan in me.
More recent games have gotten more advanced in storytelling techniques but this game I’ve always found the most fascinating.
I’ve played through quite a few but some off the top of my head were:
- Chrono Trigger
- Chrono Cross
- Final Fantasy VI, VII, VIII, X
- Mass Effect
There are lot of great games with great stories, but I'd say GTAIV is the best of them. The story in the game is just so fun and tragic at the same time, and filled with great characters and detail.
I like too many games to narrow it down, even if I only look at games with deep and interesting stories.
Metal Gear Solid, Makai Senki Disgaea, Suikoden II, Chrono Trigger, Resident Evil 7, and Silent Hill 2 would certainly rank high on a personal list.
However selecting a single game isn't something I could do. Enjoy a lot of games, most not focused on telling a good story, yet even the six listed above; to me are all equally excellent!
I liked Warcraft 3: Reign of Chaos' story and thought that The Frozen Throne's was underrated. The two of them complement each other rather well, because that's what expansions are supposed to do, and I hope that we'll see a new macro perspective story instead of WoW. Just give us Warcraft 4 Blizzard!
Junk Jack!
no seriously...I demand a lot from my stories, video games cant do it for me. The only one I was able to pay attention to without getting bored would have been No One Lives Forever because of the humor.
people mistaken 'story' with 'visual effects' I do not
Bioshock. The idea of a business magnate building an isolated utopia for the elite, outside of Government control and introducing a genetic material which was intended to create a "master race" which ultimately led to Rapture's demise was brilliant. The storyline kept you guessing, and at the time the choices you made (Harvest the Little Sisters or not) were controversial. A true gem of a story, and one of my favourite games of all time.

Watch Man in the High Castle
Bioshock had good writing, plot, and a really awesome aqua-steam-punk Great Gatsby but scientist dystopia vibe to it. It's not my favorite game, but the whole story was incredibly well written and, more importantly, told extremely well.
Mass Effect 1-3 is an incredible series, just really sweeps you off your feet and carries you along for this grand space opera. Top-notch voice acting to read the generally-good writing, great cast of characters, an awesome hero/ine.
Warcraft 3 plus Frozen Throne has a very dramatic story, and the campaign is paced well enough with diverse objectives to suit the story. The game incorporates a lot of unique props in the missions to make it feel like they really cared about telling the story.
It's not a popular opinion, but I really enjoyed the story of the Dishonored series. First, the game world is incredible. Then there is the whole betrayal. And all the time you're playing, you're aware of this oppressive sense of despair that is just on the verge of spilling over into full chaos; plague, whale oil shortages, black magic, gangs...it's just this stew of terribleness and each aspect has a great story to it.
I love the stories in the Command and Conquer universe. They're so cheesy and the the live-action FMV's they do to tell the story are corny as hell and it's great. They've had a pretty good cast of actors along the way, too, including Joe Kucan, Michael Biehn, James Earl Jones, Tricia Helfer, and so on. Red Alert and the Tiberium series.
The Last of Us' story is not really groundbreaking imo. It's that Naughty Dogs' quality of story telling that stands out.
Here are my nods for the best story (note, not in any specific order:)
Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
The Last of Us
The Witcher III
Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age Inquisition
Knights of the Old Republic and Knights of the Old Republic III
Mass Effect and Mass Effect II
Fallout 3
The bioshock 1 and 2 stories were compelling. The last of us did get me at times as well seeing the relationship between Joel and Elle develop.

I think the same. WC III was a first game with a great plot. Then I played other games which had good stories. But the first impression is more important for me.
