I recently bought a copy of the classic nes game pirates. I think it had a save feature like Zelda and I have yet to have theopportunityto try out the cartridge because of lack of working NES. I was wondering what are the odds of it still being able to save? I think the old NES games had some type of internal battery and I was wondering if it would still work in a 20 year old game? If I am mistaken about the battery save thing please correct and tell me how saves worked back then.

It might work, it might not. I have quite a few NES carts with a save feature and only one doesn't work anymore. If the game doesn't save, you can change the battery. It's just a lithium battery, i forget what kind, but directions can easily be found online.
