I picked one of these up brand new. It's the model 9001 one. I did a little searching and found some people reporting that their slims were whisper quiet. But they might have been talking about previous revisions.

According to Wikipedia, for the 9000 series, there was a hardware overhaul. My slim makes a very audible whirring noise that I can hear across the room. This is with or without a DVD in the drive so I don't think it's the drive. I think it might be the fan/power supply.

Any other series 9000 owners have this issue?

yes the fan does seem to be a bit loud. I have the PS2 9000 lego Batman vesion. So mine is a first 9000 revison. It is do the the contruction of the air vents of the PS2 9000 as apposed to the PS2 Slim 7000 series. if you compare the 2 Playstation 2 slimlines together. you can see the difference in the airflow vents. As well as the overall difference in contruction between the 2 Slimlines. So the noise is not a sign that the PS2 9000 series slim is about to die. But it is loud. I would switch to a 7000 series slim if the noise gets to you.

The 90000 series' fan is louder than the earlier Slim models, but it's also more efficient. Many old Slims had overheating issues. I don't mind it at all since it's quieter than the fat PS2.

Thanks all. Glad to know it's not just mine. It is very audible though. >< But it being quieter than the PS2 fat made me feel better. :) At least it's keeping my slim cool.

Actually, it was just due to some of the power adapters, not the console itself. If your slim PS2 overheats, chances are that the power adapter was recalled and you might be able to get a replacement from Sony. See this link: http://www.channelregister.co.uk/2005/09/13/sony_ps2_power_recall/

(Sorry, you'll have to copy and paste it because I keep getting errors when I try to post a clickable link)

Hmm... you know I was just thinking. Maybe the newest (SCPH-90000 series) PS2's have a louder fan because they get hotter than the previous models. After all, one of the major changes was the new PS2's now have a built-in power supply. I'm not saying this is a bad change, but maybe they had to put in a more powerful fan in order to ensure that the console doesn't overheat.

My fat-model PS2 is quiet as a mouse. More quiet even. Not sure what is going on with it but it has always run so silent.
