I wasn't a huge Prototype fan, but The Incredible Hulk Ultimate Destruction was the first free roaming game I enjoyed not named GTA.

I wish the best of luck to all affected. The market is insanely tough (Prototype 2 topped the charts in April of 2012).

It seems like every week a developer is closing it's doors. It's kind of depressing.

Not good. Not good at all.

I never really cared for Prototype... i thought infamous did it better, but it was an original IP and was successful. Seeing all these studios go down makes me wonder if all we will see next gen would be sequels to current gen games.

And thats a scary prospect.

This was previously announced IIRC, but there are new articles about it recently and its relevant to the subject at hand. Basically Sega is focusing on four IPs at retail, though they plan to release 50-75 games a year via download (nods towards VF: Final Showdown).

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-06-28-sega-sacrificing-euro-oz-operations-to-focus-on-four-core-ips

Sega will sacrifice operations in Europe and Australia to laser-focus on four key brands: Aliens, Sonic, Total War, Football Manager.

and

"Whether that's FIFA, Call Of Duty or Assassin's Creed, those titles are just becoming bigger and bigger and it's harder and harder to break into the market with new IP. And there's a big transition at the moment."

------------

A big chunk of this generation's really innovative games have been downloadables and I think that will be even more true next gen. Downloadable don't quite have the scale of big budget releases, but they number games like the aforementioned Final Showdown as well as Journey, Bastion, Fez and Pixeljunk Monsters.

I loved Hulk Ultimate destruction back on the xbox, never really cared for prototype though. Still it's a shame that our industry's main retail games are becoming more and more cookie cutter sequel factory's with a lot of the really great stuff being downloadable only now.

Hulk was great, didn't like the first Prototype enough to buy 2 at launch. It's too bad they never made a sequel to Ultimate Destruction.

That sucks. Hulk: Ultimate Destruction was the bomb. I especially liked turning a car into boxing gloves.

I used to own the original Prototype, but I really couldn't get into it as much and traded it into Amazon for store credit.

That being said, it doesn't matter what developer it is, big or small; it's always sad and depressing to see another game studio bite the dust. I wish those members of that studio nothing but the best of luck in their future!

Once again proving Activision doesnt care about contributing anything to the game industry. If a game cant sell billions & have yearly rehashes then apparently you're not needed. What do they honestly have left? COD & James Bond of Duty.

Anyways i hate to see another studio close. The game industry seems to be slowly collapsing & nobody wants to admit it. I loved the previous games they had made, Hulk Ultimate Destruction in particular is one of the best last generation games & best super hero games of all time.

I havent yet played Prototype for a few reasons but i was planning on & still am going to pick up Prototype 2. Im just waiting for a price drop. The game does offer something really awesome even if a bit mindless. There is reason for people to own a game like Prototype in their collection.

I was never the biggest Prototype fan, but Ultimate Destruction was one of the best comic book games before Rocksteady unleashed Arkham Asylum.

R.I.P. Radical.

That's a shame. Not just because they made pretty decent games (except HAZE, if I remember correctly), but because those games sold fairly well, and it still wasn't good enough.

They totally should've included MULTIPLAYERZ IN PROTOTIPE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 0_o

Haze was made by Free Radical (the TimeSplitters folks), which went bankrupt in 2009.

Unfortunately news about studios closing hasn't been all that uncommon lately. Hopefully the people who worked there find jobs elsewhere in the industry.

Indeed. To this day, it still remains to be the best Hulk game.

The highlight of Ultimate Destruction for me was hammer throwing a tank into a helicopter.

I loved Hulk and really liked Prototype as well. Shame this studio got shut down but they did seem like a one trick pony.dvader654
I think being a one trick pony is fine provided you're the best or among the best at what you do, but the Prototype games were problematic because they made the lead character too powerful. The designers seem to do that intentionally (they stated that the Prototypes were power fantasies). I think their mistake was that while gamers like to control strong characters, they also like to overcome tough obstacles. Being a man of steel in a world of glass doesn't stay interesting for long.

Nothing of value was lost. take a look at the small list of games developed by them, it was only a matter of time.

I hope those affected can find new work soon. While I have never played their titles, their work is fairly well respected. Sad that the sales didn't follow through.

According to Gamespot the studio isent closed.

They just wont work on their own titles anymore.

But its kinda sad because as they said on gamespot it means that another org. IP is going down the drain just because it didn´t sell that much.

It honesty tho i blame the COD genereation they are going to ruin the gaming for the rest of us. and make gaming into mindless dull entertainment.

Nope, activision canceled scarface 2 which they been workign for 2 years and was set to release in 2008 EA fired 38 studios because kingdoms of amalaur did not sell enough. Basicly, the publishers cancel whatever it doesnt sell and since thye dont know what to do with the devs, they put them on sure projects.

Maybe the reason there was even a prototype 2 was activision was willing to shell out money to try and save an existing ip, perhaps CoD was in a way helping one of its own ips

or

Maybe if it wasnt for the yearly rehashes of Assassins Creed you wouldnt be getting a rehasing of splinter cell action adventure game
