As of today, Rare is a little less dead: George Andreas, who has been working with Rare since 1996 has left the Microsoft-owned (gimped?) company to join Sony. Andreas has been creatively involved with classics such as Goldeneye 007, Banjo Kazooie, Donkey Kong 64 and Killer Instinct Gold and will now be one of the key elements of Sony's London studio.

I guess he was sick of slumming on making Kinect Sports games. Good shot by Sony to snatch a talent like this for their team.

Meh. I would love for Rare to start making games again but when they were making games, which were as good as pretty much any game they've ever made before, they simply weren't selling even when they launched at cheaper then current prices. Microsoft gave them plenty of support but their games weren't having any impact and Microsoft needed someone to develop their new avatar system and some software for Kinect and I think Rare has done an excellent job at doing that. I don't feel that anyone's to blame for how things turned out for Rare, I think it's simply the changing of the times. Microsoft has kept them around and kept them employed and for good reason, they have a solid portfolio of games. I'm pretty certain that they will once again tap into that portfolio of games which may even end up being sooner rather then later.

It isn't surprising considering that Rare hasn't released anything worthwhile in years. It is a real shame to see the way Microsoft has managed this company since acquiring them. I can understand from a business perspective as to why MS had Rare working solely on Kinect games, but it did nothing for Rare's image in the eyes of a core gamer. Rare could have released a lot more games in the almost 8 years since the 360 has been on the market, whether they were sequels or new IPs. It's frustrating that Rare hasn't been allowed to follow through on projects like a new Conker or Perfect Dark. Instead, they were cancelled, most likely for Kinect games and Avatars. Hopefully, Microsoft will take advantage of Rare and the IP they own and start cranking out some quality titles next gen.
