So I haven't played through this game is a long time, and I started again last night... Even though I knew it was coming, the Licker freaked me out, and the arms coming through the boarded windows actually made me JUMP! I was like, "Dude, wassa'matter whichu?"

I couldn't believe that a game I know so well could have made me jump... Testament to the sound work and camera directing... And that is why I will always love the old-school RE games to anything from RE4 onwards. I would love to see this game given the HD face-lift, or possibly the REmake treatment the first game saw on the GameCube...

Where my old-school RE friends be at, yo?

:D

Let's talk OG-RE up-in-here. We need a return to the cinematic, SURVIVAL horror games. I don't want the new-school RE4-type fans to be short changed on what they have come to love, but would it be too much to ask to give us both kinds?

Thoughts?

So would I. 2 deserves a REmake more than the first one did.

RE2 is the best of the series.

Resident evil 2 is definitely my personal favorite because it was my introduction to the series back in 1998. It's great that anyone with a PS3 can download and enjoy the classic RE games.

Never played any RE games until Revelations for the 3DS and now I want to play them all. I think you can download 'em on PSP, which is the easiest way for me to play them because of the suspend feature. Any reason to play the games in order or should I just start wherever?

It was a decent game. Hyped up the roof as well.

Personally, I winded up liking Deep Fear more in spite of its lackluster character cast.

yeah RE2 is awesome. I need to play it some more. if they put ACTUAL zombies in RE4 it would be better. I'm hoping RE6 is better than 5

I wouldn't count on it getting better with the current direction the franchise has taken.

Yeah, the current path of RE is a complete wash for me... A proctological exam in front of an audience would be better than RE5.

I was just in a shop, and thought about picking up "Outbreak" because that's one I never went through - Can that game be played reliably without the online BS?

Yeah, Bio Hazard 5 was a huge let down. It might've looked pretty but gameplay-wise the game was flat-out archaic.

Yes it can, but that game has some of the worst load screens of all time. Terribly long, and it can ruin the game.

It is a good idea for an RE game, but if you can't get it for dirt cheap don't worry about it.

I respect your opinion, but RE2 is my ultimate favorite, and in my opinion deserves a remake. I am glad now that there's still room for one, it would be on a next gen console. Re2 in Re5 graphics.. mmm.

RE2 is definitely a great game and my favorite of the series. Even though I'd love to see it to get a REmake like the first did on the Cube, it wont happen :(

Anyway TC you're not alone in the fact that it can still make you jump even though you know it so well, I've played through it more times then I can count and it still gets me at times  But thats what makes it so great.

Thinking about it is making me want to play it again now, but because it's getting late here and I have a lot to do in the next few days it'll have to wait until I've finished.

It's $6us, so I thought, hey, not so bad... But if it can't be played well without the online partners I'd pass on it. Thank you very much for the info and opinion I really appreciate it. Next time I'm by that shop, I'll pick it up - It's only been in there for the last few years, so I'm not worried that it'll disappear.

:)

I own all of the games in the series except the "Outbreak" games, and as I have already said, I prefer the cinematic survival games to the RE4 over-the-shoulder action games. To be fair, I enjoyed RE4, I thought it was well written and of course it's a graphic marvel on NGC as well as PS2. I just wish they had branched the series at that point and continued both presentations/ focuses in gameplay. RE5 was not as engrossing as RE4, and certainly took too many turns in the daylight and without the traditional T-Virus zombies for me to get behind it.

Definetly a fantastic game. IMO, it's the best RE game in the series. Such a great atmosphere and storyline in that game. And when it came, it had some impressive graphics for the time, especially the cutscenes. And yeah, like you said, the first time you see The Licker, that was freaking awesome! Or when the zombies bust through the windows and shamble through them into the police station you're all like "Oh crap, I have like no ammo and I already cleared those freaking areas!!!" What made me jump right out of my skin, is when you go out to the shed thing that's out back behind the police station. You open the door in the back of the shed thing, and you're expecting a door load screen. I was literally playing the game in complete darkness because I shared a room with my brother and he was sleeping, I also had the headphones on. The music suddenly get loud and quickens and instead of a door, a zombie is suddenly in front of me and lunging for my throat! INTENSE!

The best part of the game is that you're getting 4 different RE games in one, if you think about it. Claire and Leon both have their own separate first playthrough, and second playthroughs where everything changes. (That trenchcoat guy in Claire's 2nd playthrough is definetly the prototype to the scary as hell Nemesis in RE3. And it's freaky as hell when you run into a room to get away with him, and you think you're safe, then they want to throw all the rules out the window you realize as he crashing through the wall intent on your death.) Show me another RE game with that much band for your buck.

RE2 is my favorite in that series, and that's saying a lot considering some of the other RE games out there. Though the series died to me with RE5.

Of all my gaming years, I will admit it, I have never played a Resident Evil game. If only there was always an alternative that looked better on the side each time. But I suppose it's high time for me to get up to scope. So, which game do I start with?

It was also my favorite game of the entire series. The game had aton of atmosphere. I can remember the tension I felt while watching the door to a new room open for the first time and wondering what abominations awaited me on the other side.

I would say begin with the first game, "Resident Evil Director's Cut", available on PSN or you can get the disc version for cheaper prices at resale or online. It sets the whole ball rolling, and you'll have a greater appreciation for the refinements of the following titles - There's really nothing bent or broken with the first game, technically, but they did hone the process in later games and just kept making them better and better. Plus, you owe it to yourself to hear some of the worst voice acting in the series... It's an "All Your Base Belong To Us" video game history high watermark.

My personal favorite version of the first game is on the Nintendo DS, actually ("Resident Evil: Deadly Silence" - Get it? Deadly Silence? Aw-haw-haw, clever CAPCOM)... The reason I like that version is the dual screens give you a map that's open all the time, and they might have made some tweaks to the targeting for the platform. Stylus control is really only for inventory manipulation, and a tacked-on knifing control... But you can play it traditionally with D-pad control like the original title.

The first through third games are gaming royalty, and you should definitely try them out, starting with the first game. Then you'll know who all the characters are, and the series will unfold like a lotus. Then, you'll (hopefully) be addicted like the rest of us...

... Perhaps the T-Virus is transferred through playing these games? I have a zombie-like devotion that hasn't stopped since 1996 when I started playing... Until the wee hours... And missing work... Friends... A normal LIFE...

yes its a very good game, its not the best RE , but its good.

Darkman2007

I think it is the best Resident Evil game, but I want to say I enjoyed the original as an experience, a bit more. There was just so much shock value in that first game.

I'd rank my top 3 as:

-RE

-RE2

-RE:CV

I'd follow BlueCash on that. RE1, then 2, then 3, then "Code Veronica X". All fantastic. Then (if you have a GameCube) do "RE ReMake", then "RE Zero" (both GC exclusives). In the timeline, RE4 comes next as far as the main story is concerned. You can play that on PS2 or GC, the PS2 version has an added sidestory following Ada Wong so you might want to get the PS2 version of RE4. RE4 makes the shift into a more action oriented game without the cinematic presentation (fixed camera angles), and they give you enough ammo to level a small country, so the "survival" aspect goes right out the window. In the first games, try to use the knife on easier enemies, or run around/ avoid them if you can to save ammo for the later nasties. In the early games, they don't supply you with ammo to kill everything as your instincts might have you do...

Just a tip.

;)

EDIT: If you like the RE games, then I suggest you check out the first "Dino Crisis" game, too.

I have Dino Crisis, although I am not much of a fan, I do play that from time to time. So I have no comment so far on the first game. Might have to go in further.

I completely agree with playing the first game first. But I highly, HIGHLY recommend playing the Gamecube version over any other version. It EASILY the best version of the many different versions of Resident Evil 1. The graphics are amazing, IMO some of the best on the Gamecube that even holds up to many modern system games. The lighting effects in particular were jaw-dropping. And they added enough in there to make it feel different, yet not so much that it's an entirely different game and it doesn't change the story, it's the perfect amount.

You're talking about "REmake", I assume, and yes it's really great, but you'll have an even better appreciation for "REmake" after completing the PS1/ NGC/ DS version of the original "Resident Evil" first. Also, most items have been shuffled in "REmake", and some minor additions to the maps & monsters have been added to "REmake" on the GameCube to make it a fundamentally different experience for those of us who have memorized the PS1 version of the game. So playing one of the first versions (on DS, NGC, PS1, or Dreamcast, etc) is recommended first, I'd say.

Just my take on it. Certainly not a law.

The cheesy voice acting and live action footage were part of what gave the original game its unique identity back then.

If you play the remake then you'd miss on all that stuff.

I agree. That is what it was all about. Start with the psx original. If you start with GC remake, then it will be odd going to RE2.

RE2 is an amazing game, but it's a bit too short and too easy. I'd love it if capcom would remake it to address these issues.

While this may separate the game from the REmake, the REmake is a much better game. Having played up to 4, I consider it to be the all around highest quality title in the series. It's worth playing, but not before the REmake.

The Gamecube remake is definitely what the original should have been, but it wasn't simply due to the technology and budget available. The horrendous voice-acting was funny, but at the time it didn't matter because we were all so enthralled with this Survival horror concept. I only got a PS1 solely to play the original RE.

Now, with the release of RE2, I was pumped I think more than anyone. The enhancements made to gameplay, graphics and sound were astounding over the original. I would agree that of ALL the RE's ever released, RE2 was perhaps the best, just because it was so perfectly executed, whereas the others simply did not have as much of an impact.

Both of those games will always carry a fond memory in my heart and mind. Even when I'm 70 years old I'll be telling my grandkids about the birth of survival horror!

If you can find it, I definitely suggest it - It's a liiiiittle on the rare side to come by, in my experience - But worth hunting down. It's been awhile since I played the DS version, but I think they may have shuffled a fe items around from the original game, too, to make it attractive to those of us who have memorized everything, like they did for the GameCube "REmake". The map being open constantly is a real sanity saver if you're like me and forget stuff the minute it's closed. Also, inventory manipulation and reloading are easier and more immediate.

:D

Other than that, it's the exact-same wonderful game. And portable, which is nice. If you have a PSP, the PSN downloads are great for that reason, too.

Enjoy!

well , its more faithful than the cancelled Gameboy Colour version www.youtube.com/watch?v=ShC8zJgbTts on the one hand , it looks very interesting, on the other, it makes no sense as to why they bothered to try.

Yeah, it's pretty expensive. That is how the map is on Revelations and it works really well. I think it's a lot cheaper from PSN though... The convenience of being able to just snap the screen shut or flip the little switch on the PSP is huge for me.

Bio Hazard didn't gave birth to the survival horror genre in the least.

There have been survival horror type of games since the 80s. Even with the zombies outbreak theme, like the excellent Death of the Brain.

It put the "survival horror" term in everyone's mouths in the west, and its particular game design was indeed very unfluential was and followed by a myrad of similar looking and feeling posterior games, but that's it.

[QUOTE="MonkeySpot"]

Thoughts?

Blueresident87

So would I. 2 deserves a REmake more than the first one did.

RE2 is the best of the series.

I think of the old ones code veronia is the best. and 4 and 5 are really close. but I'd say 4 is a little better.

2 is great, but it's also very short. the licker is very intenswe and yeah it freaked me out quite a bit but before you know the game is alrady over in my experience.

It was a decent game. Hyped up the roof as well.

Personally, I winded up liking Deep Fear more in spite of its lackluster character cast.

Panzer_Zwei

the only thing resident evil 2 did better was the atmosphere and characters. but everything else was better in deep fear, especially storyline, gameplay and music. I like them both a lot though

[QUOTE="Another48hours"]Of all my gaming years, I will admit it, I have never played a Resident Evil game. If only there was always an alternative that looked better on the side each time. But I suppose it's high time for me to get up to scope. So, which game do I start with?BlueCash

I personally enjoyed Resident Evil 1, 2, 3, and Code Veronica X and I recommend playing them in that order.

it's better to play resident evil code veronica before resident evil 3. especially for stiryline. I thought code veronica x was a lousy port and the added movies about wesker imo don't helpt the game at all

RE2 was my favourite game in the series for a long time, up until I played RE4.

Nevertheless, RE2 remains my second favourite game in the series, just behind RE4.

Btw, if you're going to play Outbreak, just play File 2. It can be a very difficult game, but it's also a great game with lots of replayability.

I've only played RE:4 but a local game store has the first 2 RE games for sale. Thinking about picking them up at a later date
