I think the thread's title is clear enough. Why do you go back to the 8/16/32 and 128-bit eras' games? In my case, I do so because I wanna experience the games I missed out on at the time and are worth it IMO. There's only a couple legacy games I'd replay these days.

I sadly don't have the time nor the interest to replay games as a hobby anymore. Just killing time for the most part.

I do it for many reasons, but here are a few main ones:

-Nostalgia: I love playing video games that I grew up on, or games that I remember coming out when I was younger, but never had the opportunity to play for whatever reason. My memories if that game and the time it came out definitely add to my enjoyment of the game, and definitely motivate me to play a lot of retro titles.

-The games are just better: While current gen video games have wayyy better graphics, many current gen games feel like carbon copies of each other and it seems like original, innovative games are becoming more and more of a rarity. I feel like there were far more innovative, fun, and interesting games released prior to this gen, and they were made more so for the sake of creating a fun, great game and not a much to make a ton of money (I know money has always been a factor). Overall, I just think retro games are of much higher quality.

-Retro gaming is a lot less expensive (mostly): 98% of previous gen titles can be obtained for a fraction of what they retailed for new, making retro gaming far cheaper than dropping $60 on new PS3 titles, or even $50 for a Wii game. There are noteworthy exceptions though. . .here's looking at you Panzer Dragoon Saga.

Oh yes, nostalgia. I retro for that as well. But it's more about looking up boxart and gameplay vids on Youtube than actually replaying the game these days. And only if I'm really bored.

YouTube is literally a time machine. I feel like I'm back at that age whenever I see a video/ad/gameplay/cartoon related to that time. Less so music videos.

because the games (well not all of them , but you know what I mean) are fun.

also arcade games were more common , and when youre an adult who doesn't always have hours and hours of free time, arcade games such as fighting games , let you play a game for 15-30 minutes at a time. And while you can get plenty of these games on mobile devices, Id much rather play 30 minutes of Virtua Fighter than I would just about any game on a mobile device.

RPGs. You rarely find any good ones on the current-gen consoles, save for the handhelds. PS2, PS1, and SNES have the best RPGs ever created.

Better RPGs. Modern RPGs lack in good story and focus more on the graphics :/

My main reason is time, It is easy to fire up the Snes/Megadrive/NES/N64 etc for a quick 1/2 hour of gaming. Also since I played the 8/16/32/128 bit eras when they were state of the art. I can enjoy the classic games as well as current 360/PS3

Theres no such thing as nostalgia for videogame older consoles. I dont need to give you a long explanation why I go back to playing the Atari 2600, Playstation, Gameboy advance SP, Gamecube, SNES, whatever.

We just do. Period. Plus the games were a hell lot better than today's crap for Xbox and PS3. Gameplay is what's more important. I want to play a damn game.

Not some interactive "movie" like Heavy Rain

lol I often do that to, but I feel way more happy and entertained when I get to actually play these games. Also, there is a satisfaction in owning them as well. I don't know, they just feel special to have :p

They are affordable and fun. I missed out on a lot great games when I was younger. Now that I'm old enough to afford them, I'd like to go back and pay them a visit.

  1. Because they have fun games.

  2. They're cheap. Not all of them. There are some pricey cIassic games out there. But for the most part, they're cheaper than modern games.

  3. They're collectible, and I'm a collector. I not only collect video games, I also comic books, Star Trek stuff, and to a lesser degree comic cards. I also own a lot of music, but I think that's more of a coincidence than really collecting it (I just buy a lot of metal and hard rock because I like it).

  4. Nostalgia. I'd be in denial if I couldn't admit that this factors into it a little.

I have to wonder though , how does nostalgia fit in , if youve never played a particular game? nostalgia towards general gameplay type/visuals?

Because i'm almost 32 and i miss my childhood so i do it to escape like getting into a time machine. If i get into a dark room sit in front of a old tv throw on resident evil for the ps1 it's like a time warp i imagine being 16.

Well if you've never played the game, then yeah, nostalgia isn't a factor in those cases. But a lot of the games I own are games I played as a kid/teen, so in those cases nostalgia is definetly a factor.

I'm only talking about games we've actually played or atleast remember the hype and top-of-the-line feel that sorrounded the games when they first came to stores. Seeing the games showcased at stores. And gameplay/ad clips shown on TV at the time.

I'm talking pre-internet when all we had for game news were magazines and the weekly ultra-special and must-watch shows that reviewed games.

Anyone here remember "Movies, Games, and Videos" and "Gameswatch" ? "Cybernet" is still running I think, so that doesn't count.

They represent a simpler time in my gaming life when people played the games simply for fun, and not to seem like the smart guy on System Wars. Plus the only good Star Fox games arr on Legacy consoles.

Because the games are fun, and nothing on the current-gen offers what they do. Not that I don't enjoy current games, but the focus is definitely different.

Nostalgia I guess, and it is nice to have the simplicity offered by the older legacy games from time to time.

Because they're fun, regardless of the age of the console. Every gen is different too, so it's fun to experience different kinds of gameplay.

I don't like the general direction that most games are heading in.

JRPGs -Older ones had captivating stories, world maps with hidden locations to find and music that fit with the scenery like a form of art. Most modern ones are linear, have long cutscenes that happen too often and are generally forgetteable.

Resident Evil- The earlier Resident Evil games dropped characters into zombie/mutant infested areas with limited firepower and tight spaces. While the games weren't especially hard, they did successfully deliver a sense of danger and some anxiety. They also had plenty of puzzles that resembled something from Shadowgate or Monkey Island. I'm fine with the new over-the-shoulder perspective of newer ones, but they're too much like action flicks now.

The Legend of Zelda - The first one was extremely open-ended and gave a sense of adventure and exploration as the awesome theme played in the background. LA, ALLTP, OOT, and WW weren't as open but still had a good deal of exploration. Skyward Sword and the DS games, on the other hand, seem to have taken a cue from modern JRPGs and became more linear.

DLC on its own isn't bad, the problem is that quite a lot of DLC is just stupid and should really be in the game, like the extra costumes in Street Fighter 4 , or the extra characters DLC in MvsC3 in fact alot of times those things are on the disc, and we simply pay for an activation code , but there are also examples of DLC that is well done, like the Valkyria Chronicles DLC , which added missions and even a mini storyline. though I still remember Blizzard giving away free maps for Starcraft every month or so back in the day.

Nostalgia, and to finish unfinished business. also, when I was a kid, 90's to early 2000's my mom would buy me video game magazines, and I would see the game ads, screenshots, previews, reviews, etc. it felt like I was playing them myself. (I didn't beg/wish for a console, my parents just bought me a ps1, my first console) When I got to actually PLAY those games I only saw in magazines, I was filled with excitement.

That's so true. That's a huge reason I bought my TurboGrafx-16.

I go back (infact never really left) to the eras I grew up with because they are the best. I grew up with the super nintendo and a little sega megardrive/genesis and to me nothing on the market today is anything like the quality you get from the old games. Well alright I suppose in their own way games these days have quality but theres something missing that only the 16bit era can give me :).
