with the way money is lately i have eased off buying newer games and have been buying old games that i missed out on off ebay and other places on the internet. iv been checking out games like fallout, half-life 1, deus ex, abes oddworld, RE: code veronica and shenmue 1 & 2 - all of which will go down in history as great games, no doubt.

but playing these games now, without the help of nostalgia tinted glasses, is really different to playing them when they were new. take fallout for instance, iv heard so many good things about this game, about the humour, the freedom. when i play it now i just find it really boring and plain, i just have no drive to further the story for some reason, its not the games fault its just that game just hasnt traveled as well as others. i kinda have this problem with abes oddworld too.

on the other hand im having so much fun with deus ex and half-life, which imo are timeless classics. shenmue is also a great adventure game, whilst RE:CD scares me silly at times. now before you say it, this has nothing to do with graphics at all - its about the game and whether it is still fun to play today.

so can you name some games that are still worth playing?

i know what you mean. i was interested in the fallouts before 3, but i took one look at the screenshots and decided that i couldn't play that. haha.

the donkey kong country games i find too simplistic and boring now, but i used to love them so much. now i play mario world instead, because for some reason it is always fun and not based on collecting.

some others i recommend:

*super metroid

*star fox

*mario bros. 3

*metal gear solid

*vagrant story

Crash Bandicoot 1-3. Those games are still a lot fun to play. The graphics are still ok.

Its tough to separate nostalgia and actual merits of a game if you've enjoyed it for years and years. My games that stand the test of time are: StarCraft (PC) -- I think this has a good chance of being better than the sequel. We shall see. Panzer General 2 (PC) -- Quality strategy game. The disc has finally died; its going to be hell finding this game again. Dragon Force (SAT) -- Still addicting. The graphics are pretty rough, but its a strategy game. Virtua Fighter 2 (SAT) -- Best in the series and still a top fighting game. Twisted Metal 2 (PS1) -- Its a great 2 player game and the controls are still great. The graphics aren't awful, but they certainly haven't remained pretty. Metal Gear Solid (PS1) -- Tightest gameplay on PS1; also has the best graphics that PS1 produced. It was so good they were able to directly port the opening sequence for MGS4 Super Mario 64 (N64) -- Everything is awesome about this game. Great gameplay and level design. Sonic 1/2 (GEN) -- 2D platforming at its finest; Sonic 2 is my favorite game of all time. Street Fighter 2 Championship Edition (GEN) -- Great 2D fighting. Hard to beat.

Question is just how old skool you wanna go - Zelda Ocarina of time on the N64 plays great.......Fear Effect Retro Helix on the PSX is great fun to play. Older than that you could do worse than a funky little platform game on the SNES called PLOK - the music alone makes it worth playing. Older again i still play California Games on the Sega Master System with friends when were all getting a nostalgia buzz on.

Have you played an oldish PC game called Undying? Thats pretty creepy

I think many games over the past ten years or so have aged well and are still great to play and any game I buy in that time frame, I'm not worried about it being too aged yet, but maybe Starcraft comes to mind as the one that has aged the best.

that's probably what happens when you design a game based purely on fancy graphics.

Donkey Kong Country is only good on the SNES, thehandheld versions just can't pull it off IMO.

here are a few games you might want to check out.

1. Contra (NES)

2. Super C (NES)

3. Sunset Riders (SNES)

4. Perfect Dark (N64)

5. Timesplitters: Future Perfect (PS2)

6. Red Faction (PS2)

7. Gun (PS2)

8. Red Dead Revolver (PS2)

9. SOCOM series (PS2)

10. Medal of Honor series (varies)

Action Adventure/Platform/Horror

1. Fear Effect series (PS1)

2. Hitman series (PS2)

3. Dino Crisis series(varies)

4. Max Payne (PS2)

5. Castlevania series (varies)

6. Dynasty Warriors series (PS2)

7. Silent Hill series (varies)

8. Tenchu series (PS2)

Ok, thay should be enouh to keep you going for at least a little while... Check out my collection if you need some other good ideas, I own most of the great older games, and working on getting the ones I don't have!

If you would like any suggestions from other genres just let me know! I picked some of my favorites (that I still play from time to time) out of my personal 1,200 game plus collection.

Perfect Dark is a good game once you give it a chance! The firing range challenges and progressive gameplay give it a good edge! It starts out a little slow, but nearing the halfway point and on it really starts to pick up! Not to mention multi player is fantastic, and the laptop gun used as a sentry gun adds a nice tactical edge! It doesn't have a super deep storyline, but the gameplay shines! I am more for a great gameplay experience rather than a game covered with a ton of cutscenes and smoke and mirror tricks! Give it another try and remember what generation of gaming it is from. Many games have taken ideas from Goldeneye 007 and Perfect Dark, seeing as though they pretty much solidified the shooter genre, and brought many new players in with the new era! Without those two games, MANY games that are even halfway similar probably wouldn't have even been produced.

I've been playing a lot of older games as well lately.

Dreamcast games seem to age quite well. I'd reccomend Sonic Adventure, Jet Grind Radio, and Skies of Archadia.

As for the PS1 I'd recommned Tomba! (which I'm playing through for the first time right now), and Ape Escape.

X-Com:UFO (AKA X-Com: Enemy Unknown)

I believe it was added to steam for $5 or so. If you like strategy games of any kind, you'll like that game.
