Perhaps slightly different from the usual thread where people request a game to play. I would like someone to suggest a game for me, on either PSX og SNES(possibly NES).

Main criteria is that you consider the game to be very challenging(due to gameplay, horribly bugged games doesnt qualify)

For the record I already played through M&M3, Chrono Trigger and FF4/5/6, Secret of Evermore and Secret of Mana, none of them were particularly tough, although enjoyable games.

Thanks in advance.

ps - if anyone is curious why, its because people are saying old console games are way harder than todays games, so bring it :)

You are trying to disprove this argument by only using one genre?

I challenge you to get Battletoads or Contra for NES and try to beat it without using codes. Try to beat Mario 1,2 or 3 for that matter.

Legend of Legaia is definitely one of the more challenging RPGs for PS1. The battle pace is a little slow, but some of those bosses are absolutely brutal. when you get near the end of the game, save your progress in two different files... because there is a nearly impossible boss and a terribly placed save point. If you save, and can't beat the boss, you can't go back and level up. that's the only real "bug" in the game.

Good point. I beat all the mario games as a kid, so ruling those out. If Contra and Battletoads are on par in difficulty with the Mario games its not really what I am after ;)

As for asking for rpg's/action rpg's, I was under the impression those were the harder type of games on these consoles, but if you have a hard game that isnt any of those, ill give it a try.

RPGs were always the easiest games of that era, although some of the harder ones back then was 7th Saga, Drakkhen, any of the Ultimas, or basically anything that was on the PC that was ported to the SNES, they're always to hard for their own good...

Try Alundra. It's a great game, and a challenging one too. The battles aren't that hard, but some platform elements and puzzles are tough, those in which you feel good after beating them.

Kid Icarus is an adventure game with slight RPG elements, if you beat that game on the NES without cheats within the year, I'll give you $1,000,000 through paypal.

Why, Final Fantasy Mystic Quest sounds like your game!

Kidding, of course.

You could always find a translated ROM of Seiken Densetsu 3, it wasn't too challenging, but it was fun. Front Mission is a strategy RPG that some people find difficult, others don't. It does get pretty tough in the 2nd campaign. I haven't played it very much my self, but you could always try Tales of Phantasia, too.

well Brave Fencer Musashi is a often overlooked game. Enjoyable and challenging. Highly recommended. As for SNES...uh hmmm...Super Mario World 2 is challenging. Less known because it was released towards the end of the 16-bit era. Uh rpg..theres a little known Enix robot rpg for SNES. Don't know the name but it was released in the U.S. Good luck!!

Um Wild Arms maybe? RPGs have never been the most challenging of games (well, JRPGs anyway) If you're looking for a challenge then play any of the original Megaman games, Castlevania 1-4 or any Shinobi game. And even though you said you beat the original SMB games I suggest you give them another try. I think it'll be a completely different story this time around. Especially with 3 and the real 2.

Final Fantasy 2(4) is pretty hard too.

I rebeat Mario 1,2,3 recently. Yes, they're a bit of a challenge, but really not so hard as everyone keeps saying..
My girlfriend, oddly enough, is beating The Lost Levels...go figure.

I remeber Star Ocean being a bit of a challenge, well completing it fully at least.

I personally loved Legend of Legaia, and I absolutely crushed the game pretty much only because I put so much time into it leveling up the characters. I think it would be challenging if you don't level up like most RPGs. However, if you want a real challenge play some of those old side scrollers as mentioned earlier in the thread, some are just brutal. I think battletoads single handedly caused me to break about 3 controllers! Some older shmups are alsofrustratingly fantastic, haha!

If you are looking for a difficult RPG, play the etrian odessey games for the DS (obviously this generation, sorry for going away from your request a little bit).

I also agreee with Alundra. I don't think I've ever been as frustrated towards a game than Alundra. I've still yet to finish it.

Although a great game, it isn't THAT hard. It was hard to run though, because my first 2 copies wouldfn't run :D.

Vagrant Story? You can beat every boss in the game by just chain hitting it repeatedly with 8+ chains even without a weapon (with just your fists) with starting hit doing 0 damage. Even with 100 risk I have yet to see a boss that can kill me in 1 hit, and if he can't - I can just heal up to full HP (5 mana for 100-150 heal is way too easy, since you will have 50-80 mana and 250-300 hp)

I would suggest Arc the Lad II for the PSX. It is an extremely challenging game with many great extras and also has a lengthy storyline. However, it only comes in a collection with the first Arc the Lad and the third one. Finding it online to buy is rare, and expensive. Also, the first two games in the series are continuous, as your characters from the first game can carry their stats to the next game. The first game is easy and can be beaten within seven hours. The second game on the other hand is a treat if you like a challenge. Another plus to the game is they look and play like SNES games if you enjoy sprite animation.
