Has anyone seen this video? Apparently, this is the version of resident evil 4 that was scrapped in favor of the new one we all are familiar with.

Think of what RE 4 could have been, or even RE5 for that matter.

Good thing they changed it then. This looks like it would have been a decent game at best(although much scarier)

Resident Evil 4 ended up being one of the best games of all time.

I can honestly say I would prefer this style of RE4 over the current one. The only part of RE4 i enjoyed was the village, the rest was pretty bleh.

I can tell I would have hated it. No human being moves like that and his shoes sound like they are made of wood. I love the dynamic lighting though. Very nice. Wish that feature was in RE4. Or 5 for that matter...

That's not too bad. I like the jumpy atmosphere, but I do prefer the more action/thriller aspects of what RE4 really is. I've never had my blood pumping at quite that high a rate when playing a game.

Wow. No I actually never saw that video. I would not mind playing that version. Just to see for myself first hand.

They should make a new RE like that, with a few tweaks it would be awesome

If you liked the movement controls in RE4...they're identical to what you see here, and in fact are pretty much identical to every RE game aside from RE5...although even in that game I ultimately used traditional RE controls.

I remember watching the original trailer for RE4, but had never seen the actual gameplay footage. Cool find. :)

If RE4 followed the same course as the first three RE games it would have hurt the franchise. I am a die hard RE fan and I can honestly say I like the changes made in 4 and 5. Neither of those games were "scary" by any means, but the more action-oriented game play in both games breathed new life into the series. I'm liking the new direction the franchise is taking on the Wii too with the rail shooters. Now if only they could make GOOD Resident Evil movies...

The sound effects were probably placeholder since this is just a BETA. May I just ask - why do you have a problem with how he moves? He's fighting ghosts that can walk through walls. It isn't meant to be realistic. Its meant to be tense.

That was actually impressive even by todays standards. But RE series has lost my favor along with Halo series. To Dead Space and COD4/KZ2. Legacys games aren't intresting me. I use to be a purist if they changed it up I didn't like it. Nowadays if its not new and innovative its just the same old crap. I need a Halo game aimed at a more mature audience with a larger emphasis on realism and a RE game thats actually a survival horror game just I dont know (BE ABLE TO WALK AND SHOOT) ...

We've had 15 years of (excellent) Resident Evil games featuring characters that handled like tanks and sounded like they were constantly wearing tip tap shoes on marble tiles. Fighting quick, darting monsters in small environments while coping with blind camera angles is not tense, it's annoying and already was obsolete in the second Alone in the Dark. It was time to move along and I'm glad Capcom did.

Saw this some time ago, the the time they announced RE4 infact and even though they have a record for making a version, then scrap it and start over. Like Resident Evil 1.5. Sadly I peronally think that version of Resident evil 4 would've been more scary, more tense then the final version with the parasite infected spanish people with pitchforks.

I remember seeing that and being excited. By the time RE4 showed up in it's eventual form I forgot about this scrapped version. If I remember correctly they restarted RE4 at least twice before the final version.

You said no one 'moves' like that, which lead me to believe you were merely talking about movement controls, and while the camera and aiming was changed, neither of those points change the fact that the underlying movement control scheme in RE4 is essentially identical to past games.

sucks that they changed it

but i guess they wanted the story and atmosphere to be less "supernatural"

which is understandable, but made the game (and following game) less then scary

It looks scary and the fixed camera would've made for some incredibly detailed settings. The gameplay looks atrocious though and I got nauseous just watching it.

I'm sort of glad, since just randomly adding supernatural to RE's usual Sci-Fi like horoor wouldn't have fit, it definitely would have been cool to keep the scares in RE (although those regenerators scared the crap out of me in 4).

DMC (Devil May Cry)was originally going to be RE4, but they realized just how different it was from RE and changed it up a bit 80% of the way through. You can sort of tell it could have been DMC with all the similar boss fights, Dante looking like Leon, the "You have died" screen, and the control and camera style.

Interesting. I've never actually seen gameplay footage of that version of Resident Evil 4 before, just the trailers. It certainly looks interesting. I'm not sure about the enemies though. Dolls with knives, while granted is pretty creepy, seems like a silly enemy to be fighting. The battle with the guy with the hook didn't seem particularly thrilling either. Don't get me wrong, I still love the old style RE games, but I feel Mikami did the right thing with the series overhaul. This thing obviously has some new things going for it, but isn't a huge departure from the old formula.

I don't think they really aimed to scare people with RE5, I think by the time 5 came out it was more about action than chills. Still a really good game though I have yet to play a Resident Evil game that I haven't liked...Well, except for the Survivor and Outbreak games. Those games were kinda mediocre

that is some of the most predictable stuff i have ever seen...i couldn't even watch the video over 3 mins because of that.

I'm not saying i prefer RE4 in any way tho...i couldn't get myself to finish the game after i made a pause of a week (was about 70% done)

Look, you may not like RE 4/5, but in all honesty, I'm a huge RE fan, and despite me going on record as saying that I felt that RE4 wasn't a 'Resident Evil' game in its design, it was still one of the best games of last generation, personally...RE5 wasn't as good as RE4, but it still had a lot of strong points in its design, and just calling it 'god awful crap' really just makes it hard to take this viewpoint seriously.

Wow, this version definitely was aiming more towards a supernatural theme. This was gonna be Resident Evil: Fatal Frame. Fighting ghosts is far scarier because as ethereal entities, conventional weapons are worthless against them.

Seeing RE go from a scary survival horror, to a gears of war style game was such a dissapointment. And I didn't much like the storyline (which made the first RE's so engaging). But I guess they wanted to focus more on gameplay trhen story. Suffice to say, My interest in RE came to an end with RE4.

And BTW, my post that got modded. I was not insulting the other poster, just the games.

Hellsing2o2
The first part of your statement makes no sense, since RE4 preceded Gears of War...as for the rest, while the Lore of RE is certainly one that some might argue as engaging or interesting, the storytelling of RE4 is most certainly on par with the rest of the franchise, as was the case in RE5...in fact, none of the games had a heavy emphasis on Story, IMHO. The older games were about exploration, puzzle solving, survival, and combat/action, whereas the newer games were designed to be more linearly structured, strictly action ventures.

RE1 (namely the remake of it for GC) will always stand as my favorite RE game in the franchise overall from its design, but in terms of sheer having fun while playing RE4 and 5 take the cake easily.

Lastly, this board isn't the appropriate place to discuss moderations, so please don't bring that up here.

I meant that RE4/5 had the same gameplay style as GeOW. But I think both games inhereted they're gameplay from Kill.Switch (2004), which is not the style I'd want for RE. I thought REmake had a strong emphasis on story (it's also my favorite game in the series) becuase it answered a ton of questions, and filled us in more on what happened. And yeah I'll admit RE4 was still similar to the previous games story wise. RE5 seemed way to wacky to me, even for an RE game.

Oh sorry, I'll keep that in mind.

Realistically, analyzing the gameplay footage reveals to me that very very little gameplay wise actually is different between this version of the game and RE4 in its final form. The only real changes that occurred was that the camera was locked behind Leon at all times (as opposed to only locked behind him at times when he was aiming), and environmental design.

There's nothing in this video that indicates what the puzzle design was going to be, and other elements...and in addition, it's easy to see some heavy recycled assets and design elements (Quick Time Events, Leon's model being extremely similar to RE4's final model, the statues that actually do the exact same animation that they do in RE4, and so forth).

While it seems in some light that this was drastically different from the final product...I can look at it and see how very similar it was to the final product, as well.

My first thought was that it looked similar to code veronica. But I yeah, I guess it was just RE4 with a different camara, slower paced.

I loved every Resident Evil game in the series, original style and new "action" style.

The first one will always be my favorite (remake especially...) RE4 was awesome, beyond awesome as well.

I would love for them to make a RE were it does something like this. Go back to the roots. But that guy took too many bullets to kill. And they made Leon a wimp.

Resident Evil 4 was very disappointing. This on the other hand looked killer.
