For resident evil 1, 2, and 3 are the gamecuybe versions the same as the ps1 versions? And if I have only played number 4 what older ones do you suggest me to get?

I haven't played any of the GC RE games except for RE1. This "REmake" of the first RE follows the same story and setting, but is pretty different from the original, both in gameplay and especially graphics.
And as far as i know, the GC versions of the others are the same as the PS1 versions. They may have an extra feature like extra outfits or something but they're the same. You could probably even use the original strategy guides to make it through.
As for the order of the games, if you mean story-wise, then RE1 takes place first, of course, followed by the 1st half of RE3, then RE2, then the last half of RE3. Code: Veronica comes next, though i don't think it's available on GC.
Also, if RE4 is your first experience with the franchise, take note that the previous games have a completely different control scheme than RE4. You may not like it. A lot of people (myself included) find it near impossible to return to the older games after playing RE4.

the controls in all the RE games are almost identical, the only difference with RE4 is that the camera is behind you now.
and ya, RE1 is a complete remake, and the otherones are just ports
