As we near the last couple of years of the current gen of consoles, I have begun to analyze my stance in the gaming market. To be honest, I have far too long a list of games to purchase from this generations and previous generations for it to be logical for me to buy any of the new consoles at launch. There is plenty for me to buy and play on the systems I have, and once that begins to wear thin, there are consoles from this and prior generations that I do not own that I can purchase.

My question is this: is there anyone out there that only plays games from last generation and before? If so, is there enough to satisfy you as a hardcore/ daily gamer? Do you feel that you save money this way?

(Please feel free to provide discussion promoting details such as what systems you own, what games you play, how many hours a week, etc.)

I'm not interested in buying any current nor next gen consoles because of having so many games of previous gens to play. I'm currently going through the entire .hack series (finished .hack//G.U Vol.1, I'm playing Vol.2, and planning on playing the 3rd, and them the other 4 games), then I have the Shin Megami Tensei games, Digital Devil Saga (almost done with the first) Digital Devil Saga 2, Devil Summoner 1 and 2, Nocturne, also playing Haunting Ground, Ico, Parasite Eve, Blood Will Tell, LoZ OoT. And those are only the ones I'm going through already. I still have a truck load of PS1 and PS2 games I've recently aquired that I need to play. I have a few SNES games too I need to finish. I have a few years worth of gaming still before needing to buy a next gen console (or even current gen).

Id say my gaming time is spent 50/50 in terms of new and old games, I have a bunch of old consoles, but I also have a PS3, and a pretty good PC too that can play new games at higher res and details (though if its a year or less, its usually at highish rather than max settings)

I can see why people would only play old games , or only new games, but from my point of view, both approaches are wrong , each console generation is different and can offer a different experience, so missing out on any of them is a mistake in my opinion

Probably 90% of the gaming I do is retro and the rest is current gen. I personally enjoy games from previous gens more; they just seem to have more character, innovation, and solid gameplay. And also, the current gen is too expensive for me to keep up with buying the next great title; for the price of a new PS3 game I can typically get 10 to 25 retro games that are equally if not way more fun. I also am very against DLC and digital distribution for all kinds of reason so it makes it just that much easier to buy mostly retro. Sadly, I see the industry going 100% digital within the next decade, and as soon as that happens I will be going 100% retro. I will miss playing new games, but it is something I'm already getting over because of all the great retro games out there that could easily keep me entertained for the rest of my life.

The vast majority of my gaming time is now dedicated to retro games. I'm not into war shooters and some of the other genres are becoming too linear and cinematic. Even long-loved series such as The Legend of Zelda are showing this trend. I may buy some hand-helds in the future, but I am finished buying new game consoles.

I spend about half of my time on older games/systems but I also play new games. However if for some reason I can't/or don't want to own the new consoles next generation then yes there of plenty of older games to keep me occupied instead.

I play quite a good bit of both...but my retro collection is severly lacking because I usually do trade-ins.

When a current gen console drops below that 299 mark then I usually find a way to trade up :P

But that isn't to say I don't do retro gaming at all...quite the contrary, its just my $$$ pool is limited and would rather be able to play my games while talking to friends than just play my games.

As much as I enjoy retro games I play mostly new games simply becase my collection is lacking in them. Besides, its took expensive to buy all these old games for $10 a piece when there are way more cheap and more effective methods. :P

But I don't think I will be buying another console simply because PC gaming is my favorite, and I already have a very very good computer.

I may buy some hand-helds.

Bubble_Man

Yeah, I don't see handhelds as something that I will stay more than a generation behind with. They often offer great retro remakes, and fantastic games at far lower prices than their console counterparts. On top of that, they also usually have as good if not better games.

In my honest opinion it really doesn't matter if you're a hardcore gamer or the guy who has the most trophies and achievements, all that matters is that, we gamers, have our experiences with videogames, no matter if its old or new. Personally I play games for previous generations like the 80s to the mid-2000's since there were plenty of great games to go around. Heck, a lot of the retro games were much better than the new ones today. You might save money or not since a lot of the retro games are rare and cost A LOT

My newest console is an Xbox!

I haven't bought any current gen system basically because where I live (rural Thailand) it's almost impossible to get a decent internet connection and games these days seem to be lacking in single player/story modes/ campaigns and seem to concentrate on multiplayer experiences. They are also expensive I think. I 'm sure there are good single player games out there but I think like, should I buy a new console and 3 games or should I buy 20 good games for my older systems? It's a no-brainer for me. If I move to Bangkok in the future I might get a newer system.

I'd say I play an average of3 hours a day, at my age I'd consider that hard-core. (full-time job, middle aged, married). I'm happy with my older systems for now. I keep finding new good stuff for them.

Nuclear dawn is a cool game. Have you finished the S-mission? It was released as Chase the express (Much worse name haha) in Europe. There are so many titles available for Ps1 and Ps2 that you always find something interesting at pawn shops or second hand garage sales.

I play handhelds, retro consoles and retro handhelds. The only thing you miss out on w/ older games is some of the active online multiplayer communities. I am considering a Wii U when it comes out though in part because of the VC and all the retro games you can hopefully get for it.

I'm a bastard retrogamer, for me online game is useless, the fact having among my hands some of the best games of all times is for me a sufficient reason to not invest my time nor money in current generation systems and games, the sixth generation is for me the last man and probably my most loved one

I stick to old school gaming these days. The new gen consoles & their games (compared to old school games/systems) are expensive. I mean c'mon, $50 for a game? And it's not just that. If the games actually interested me it would be a diferent story, but these new gen games just don't do it for me. I ended up selling my Xbox 360 and the few games I had for it. I don't know... I just think you can get way more enjoyment for a way less price if you stick to old school gaming.

My question is this: is there anyone out there that only plays games from last generation and before? If so, is there enough to satisfy you as a hardcore/ daily gamer? Do you feel that you save money this way?cprmauldin

1. I only play last generation and before, in fact I rarely even play last gen and spend most of my time with 16-bit and 8-bit gaming.

2. Yes there's enough, I would say that current gaming on the other hand doesn't have enough to satisfy me, at least not unless I start downloading Wiiware/Live Arcade games, and I'm not really into the whole download scene to be honest.

3. No, not at all, current gen games come out to huge hype, end up everywhere, and are worth next to nothing within 6 months, I would save tons of money buying current games, buying retro games is often much more pricey.

I don't only play games from previous generations, I just prefer to. I own a 360 and a PS3, but I mostly play games on my PS2.

The games were better back then.

I recently sold all of my current gen systems (360 and PS3) just to focus more on my backlog of PS2 games. I'm getting older now (22 years old) and I find myself not having as much time to sit down and game like I used to. Plus PS2 games are a lot cheaper than current gen games and overall better IMO. Not to sound like a hipster but it seems like gaming has gone too mainstream and games are way too streamlined and dumbed down these days for me to really enjoy them.

I still mainly play current gen games but I also buy retro games to experience games that I've missed out on because I was young when they released and couldn't buy them. I plan to finish off Rayman Origins, Agarest: GoW and Disgaea 4 during this week since I have a week off work and then swap myself between Skyrim and some of my newly acquired PS1 and PS2 games.

The only games coming out any time soon that I really want are SSX and Ni No Kuni so I'll probably be doing a lot more retro gaming these next few months. I've got my sights set on Gregory Horror Show, Spyro 1, King's Field and Kingdom Hearts.

I mostly play current-gen only when a new game from a familiar IP I've been interested in for the past 20 years pops up (Zelda, Final Fantasy, Megaman, Silent Hill, Resi Evil, Kingdom Hearts... etc) or a familiar childhood character stars in a high-budget/hype/praise game (Epic Mickey). I'm more apt to try a new IP on handhelds (Prof. Layton/Phoenix Wright). Whenever I got nothing interesting on current gen to play on the weekends I dig up a legacy game I missed out on. Currently playing Sonic Adventure 2 on the Gamecube for example. Next current-gen game I'll play and beat is FFXIII-2 .

There was a gaming convention a couple months back I attended and it had a playable demo of Dragon's Dogma. The que was long and my friend wanted to try it but I couldn't care less. The reason I attended was that Yamaoka, of Silent Hill-fame, was guest speaker and I shook hands/took pics/got him to sign my copy Silent Hill 2 .

Basically, it all boils down to nostalgia. No different a pass-time than watching a movie these days.

TheNerevar

Don't be surprised if you suddenly stop caring al-together. This reminds me of how I viewed gaming at that age, extremely similar.

New games just eventually burnt me out. Xbox 360 with the emphasis of Xbox Live was fun at first but Call of Duty, Forza, Gears of War, and Halo 3 can only last so long online. I had to pay monthly fee, buy any content, and games costing $60+ is just pushing it. I still have my new console but I always go back to the classics. THE CONSOLES LASTED back then! The games cost less, and frankly I have more fun. I can play Halo1, SMB3, and Sonic 2 over and over and over until the cows come home. Not one game in recent times has had that lasting appeal on myself. Resident Evil isn't the same, Mario isn't, and the whole wii and kinect craze isnt my style. Gaming company's will not get my money for a while, until they go back to making really good games and bring quality to the forefront. Don't get me started on Electronic Arts and Ubisoft and their money grabbing tactics. The last great consoles I owned were the Xbox and Dreamcast, and anything prior to them was great. Online gameplay made the 360 and PS3 what they are in terms of popularity, not the games or quality.
