i had like 30-something units in one spot, and i jumped a defensive position with only 10 defenders, and i lost, and i took out maybe 2 of his men

2

i had over 30

how can anyone insist within reason that this game is any good, that it has any integrity as a game, when 10 men can beat up 30 of my men

if you're a fan of blind luck ultimately governing every move of a game, then yes; it's a brilliant game

Risk is right up there, second only to chess and D&D, as one of the greatest achievements in gaming history.

chess has no elements of random chance outside of picking your colour, risk consists of nothing BUT elements of random chance, how dare you compare the two?

Um isn't that why it's called Risk? You took a chance, a risky one that has no guarantee of work out and lost. I'm failing to see how that makes it a bad game.

The game is called Risk because their is no guarantee for success during any move. It is a game about calculating the risks correctly. Especially keeping in mind that the defender always has the advantage. Specifically talking about your 30 vs 10 loss: Your chances for winning that were less than 70%. You expected that to be a certain win?
I suggest renaming this board to "Primary videogame discussion. No power supply, no new thread"Black_Knight_00
There are enough electronic versions of this game.

Risk is a game where you need handfulls of four leaf clovers to win. I've played games where I've controled whole continents, only to be reduced to a few teritories by my next turn. Its one of those games where no amount of skill can help you XD

Yet, you create a thread about a game based on taking risks, hence the title of the game "Risk". About you pretty much making a bad choice and losing, so you call it a bad game because you screwed up. Ok, gotcha.

Well, Risk has also been turned into a video game you can play on a PC. So talking about the game here does make sense.

Risk isn't about skill or luck. It's about cunning, diplomacy, and random acts of dickishness to screw over whoever's in the lead.

What's stupid is calling a game bad because you made a bad choice. It isn't the games fault that you made whatever choice you made and lost.

The moves in Risk are always obvious, the rest is up to the roll of the dice. The game is pretty much exhausted as soon as you've read the rulesheet. I doubt the thematic overhauls and minor rule adjustments in later versions (Star Wars Risk, Lord of the Rings Risk, etc.) have made an already overrated classic into anything but a luckfest. I've played some computer game adaptions of it, and they did what they were supposed to.

How many units you have? Or to relate it to real life terms, why is America struggling against insurgents in Afghanistan and until recently, Iraq?

I don't have the game anymore. I had the IOS version (although I did have the star wars risk board game I never ended up using it) and I deleted it off my phone. I remember having loads of units though and still getting wiped out.

Diplomacy is way better than Risk. Try it with some friends, and you will never want to play Risk again.

That still doesn't make it a bad game. It is a game based purely on taking risks.

Brendissimo35

I've never gotten that game to work with any of the people I've tried it with, sadly - and that might be due to my own inability as well, to differentiate between what is diplomacy talk and what is meta-gaming talk that shouldn't be allowed, to know where to draw the line before the diplomacy ends and the actions are resolved. I might just have to try harder to understand the rules properly.

Personally I prefer a game of Imperial, Go, Blokus or other games along those lines.

Did you ever consider retreating and attacking later? But yeah, Risk is extremely luck based, most fun is making "alliances" with the other players, and once they get too comfortable to you, you back stab them so hard that they go into a rage.
