It's hard to actually role play when others around you don't do it. I found the actual idea of role playing was a lost art form once graphical MMOs hit the gaming scene.

The best role playing I've ever experienced was in non-graphical MUD (multi user dungeon) games online. I used to play Gemstone III (it is now known as Gemstone IV) and into Gemstone IV for many, many years. I had a lot of fun doing actual role playing in the game. Once graphical games made their debut and started becoming popular, the population that plays MUD games has dropped dramatically.

If I had more time, I'd love to get back into Gemstone IV - though I'm sure most people I interacted with are long gone or few and far between. I miss the role playing, the people I played with and the game itself.

I've tried role playing servers in MMOs and most people still don't role play. It's a race to the end game for most people....
