I just started messing with some rpg making software,i can do almost everything you can do with that program, so i wanted to try something serious. The problem is, i should have a story to work with. So im asking your help.
Just the main idea, no need to go into detail
For example:
There is a monster hunter in a village, he is sent on some easy mission to hunt monsters, and when he returns the whole village is burned and there are no survivors, he sets off to find out what happened
You get the ideaKoba123

A pilot of a 747 in the face of a crash evacuates all passengers, he stays on board alone and unknowinglyflys into the bermuda triangle transforming him, chrono trigger style, back in time. Once he gets out of his crashed plane he realizes that he has some stow aways who stayed on the plane. RPG fun ensues until they meet with the indigenous people who make the future people leaders of their civilization. Using modern tech they quickly expand the empire until they they brush up against the evil overlord of the abutting empire. Suikoden like battles ensue.
The other kingdom takes your beloved party member, brainwashes them, uses the techical knowledge that person has to bring down your empire, leaving you to wander the wilderness dungeoun crawling style not to regain your kingdom, but to regain your brainwashed friend. After getting back friend sad ending follows. Sequel takes place 600 years later. Call it Final Flight ;)
That's just off the cuff, so no bagging on my cord.

Alright, here's one in medieval setting:
In the past few centuries, smaller and medium scale wars were more rule than an exception. However none of the empires was powerful enough to overtake more than a few small vasal states, leading to some kind of standoff where territories would be captured and a couple of years later recaptured.
Until the demons [replace by a more imaginative name]arrived. No one seems to remember where they originate from, or who let them first into our world. All that matters is that they are being massively summoned by [kingdom 1] which uses their extreme powers to quickly invade its neighbouring states one by one. They are not immortal but uncomfortably close to it.
And then our hero arrived. While in regular combat he's strong, he's far from invincable. But he's worth his weight in gold when it comes to fighting demons. So far he's the only human to survive a 1-on-1 encounter with a demon and get away with it. And what's more, he's just begun, chances are that by the time he's fully "developed" he'll be able to take out a demon without suffering too many wounds himself.
So basically this puts you as a hero with a remarkable characteristic, which pays off big time (you get great equipment and gold because you're the hope of your kingdom) while you still have to avoid quite a few battles because you're not that impressive in battleagainst humans. I would recommend adding quite a few AI allies (more than the usual 3), a bit like what happens in Halo when you are being assisted by up to a dozen marines. In fact you could compare this setting to the Warlords Battlecry series, except that there's an extra dimension. Could you do anything with this?
Well, it depends how much/little magic you want to include in your RPG. If in doubt, magic will always provide the easiest explanation, though personally I'm not too fond ofthat technique.
A possibility would be that a seer foresaw the coming of such "demons" and trained our hero to find their weak spots and above all avoid their attacks. Or it's possible that only 1 out of 1000 people have the necessary skills to fight these demons (would be an easy stat to add to your characters) and so far only the hero has tried his luck. Which means that out there, there are still dozens of potential champions who could put up a resistance against these demons --> if the hero dies, the player gets control of one of the party's characters and needs to find another potential champion.
Or the hero can read the demons minds, allowing him to foresee their attacks. Again potentially others that could do the same, but so far no one of these have been fighting the demons.
Anyway, if anyone reading the thread has a more plausible explanation, by all means post it :)
Another possibility (I was just thinking it would be nice to have a slightly evil character, though not over-the-top): he's slowly turning into a demon himself. In fact those demons are just transformed humans, in a process that takes 5-10 years.
The other humans who transformed to demons were either solitary (in which case no one would notice their slow transformation), many died in combat before completing the cycle (remember they're not so great before the transformation is almost complete), others went berserk killing their family and fleeing into the nearest woods and mountains.
Did you not like the story I gave you here: http://www.gamespot.com/pages/forums/show_msgs.php?topic_id=25979533domatron23
