LONG VERSION (short version = scroll down) I used to be a true FPS-junkie who also enjoyed the occasional platformer and racing game. All i wanted was mindless shooting and intense action. I had a turning point about a year back though when one of my brothers, after a lot of convincing, made me try out Skyrim. A new world opened up for me! Never before have I gone THAT hooked to a game. I loved everything about it, the leveling up, looting, exploratíon, the combat. I spent a lot of time on that game, immediately after my first playthrough as a melee tank I started a new game as a mage and did it all over again, and the second run was just as much fun, since the gameplay was now completely different. I thought to myself, "maybe I could enjoy RPG after all?" Some time later that same brother told me about Dark Souls, so I thought I'd give it a shot. Man, am I happy I did! One of the best games I've tried. I've done multiple playthroughs with several different characters and I never seem to get tired of it. So, I've basically realized this is the kind of games I want from now on. What I need is suggestions, what games should I get (strictly xbox 360), what games are good? I've tried the Dragon Age II demo, but that just seemed a bit to linear and generic. It was all linear combat > forced dialogue > linear combat > forced dialouge > cutscene > dialogue > repetetive A-button-mashing. I really liked the combat sequences of Dark Souls, it was hard to learn and master yet very rewarding in the end. I also want to be able to build my character just the way I like it and I'd love it if multiple playthroughs were worth the effort. I don't want to do the exact same thing over and over. It's also important that it's an open world where I choose where to go. Like in Skyrim, where I would spend hours just wandering the landscape and exploring the environment, animals and so on. SHORT VERSION: I want suggestions on games for Xbox 360 resembling Dark Souls and Skyrim. Preferably open world, lots of exploration, different characters, weapons and armors to choose from, advanced character building and combat. Thanks for your time!

Nice to see the games gunslinger024 mentioned. The only RPG I've played is Fable 2 and a bit of Mass Effect and Skyrim (but those two don't count imo). I still want to (re)start Mass Effect and after that I want to buy the other two Mass Effect's asswell. And offcourse I wanted some other good RPG's but didn't knew which one actually untill I saw the post above me (thank you). Saw those games before but wasn't sure if they were good. So I think my choise will go for The Witcher 2 and/or Dragon Age (2)

Dragon Age Origins and Dragon Age 2 are must-play RPGs, just like both Witchers!

I would recommend starting out with something "casual" like TES: Skyrim, Dota 2 or playing classics like Final Fantasy 3 or Mario RPG: Legend of The Seven Stars and then working your way up to the more "Hardcore" RPGS.

PokeCrysis > You sound like you didn't read the original post. He played Skyrim, I don't see why you mentioned DOTA 2, and what he mentioned as reference are nowhere close to FF3 or Mario RPG.

Skyrim and Dark Souls are the top notch of the most modern (and free-world games for Skyrim, haven't played Dark Souls myself), so once you provide them as references, I would say you can only find games with slightly less freedom and quality. Skyrim expansions also do not address what the base game provides.

All the titles that come to my mind are:

"Dragon Age I" is a really quality game but its also a party game, which your previous experiences are not. So it might not fit, you have to weight the "party game" aspect.

"Dragon Age II" has some less freedom of play but is still epic and quite artistic. So... it also might not fit.

"Fallout 3" has been a real disappointment to me regarding freedom of play; I would say it does not compare to Oblivion or Skyrim, as the world sounds much smaller and the ways to "exploit" it are more numerous and more easily found. It still has a very nice start, though.

"Witcher I" and "Witcher II" come to my mind as games with choices, a whole adventure, epic story and mysterious, adult dark touch. But you are bound to play one character, even if you may make it evolve in a few ways so the lack of character creation might bother you. I feel that the Witcher series detracts from your previous experiences; they stand as the most adult and brainy and deep experience to me when compared with the other titles, but that cannot set them as favorites, since they are not Skyrim-like.

What does that leave you with?

The whole Mass Effect series, while they do not entirely provide a "different playthroughs" nice experience, still provide an adventure with large content and some freedom.

I am actually looking for references like Skyrim-like games.

So I only described what has been proposed so far, for you to have more clues about what to expect.

While waiting for a suggestion from someone, I would advise to play "onetime experience" awesome RPGs, like Mass Effect, while waiting for more "sevral playthrough full and free RPGs" like Skyrim to have real next episodes. Dragon Age I also sounds as a not risky experience, since it shall not cost much nowadays while providing nice hours of RPG time.

It does fit with the "RPG newbie" feeling since you are pretty much guided in Mass Effect or DA1, but still have some freedom.

But you have to understand that these shall then be played while waiting for sequels like Skyrim or Dark Souls :)

What you want to look into is the Fable series, Witcher series. The main difference, and this is a huge difference, is that Elder Scrolls games are meant to be played in FPS. I really like rpgs in third person since the combat system is completely different in third person view. For that reason, elder scrolls just seems completely different experience for me. Dark souls is definitely one of my favorites. If you're really interested in rpgs, you should look into PC games, they have the best selection since there's tons of MMORPGs on pc, especially F2P. And you don't have to go straight to WoW or RIFT, there are plenty of recently made ones where you dont feel years behind everyone else lol

I would say Oblivion and Morrowind FORSURE! and WoW is fun, but when you're leveling up, try to get the Heirlooms to give you extra 10% xp bonus per gear piece. Also, Warhammer Online is tons of fun, and leans more towards PVP if you like that over PVE (PLAYER VS. PLAYER AND PLAYER VS. ENVIRONMENT). Also, fable 1 is my fav. fable game, since you can actually get good armor instead of leather only items like in the others. I hated skyrim since it is totally different from oblivion and morrowind. One of the few things that really got to me is that you coudn't level up your Acrobatics or Athletics(they left them out of skyrim). Which means you can't jump super high or run ULTRA fast. Also, in morrowind you can levitate, and there are A TON more spells and things you can do compared to oblivion and skyrim. And you can kill npc's without them respawning : P although you gotta be careful you don't kill one for a questline. Guild Wars is EHH. There really isn't any motivation to play and lv. up since you can play max lv. pvp right away and it's BORING. I like leveling up and getting beast gear like in WoW or Warhammer.

I just suggested these on another thread but a couple "entry level" RPG's I enjoyed (and are cheap used for X360) are:

Two Worlds 1 & 2 - graphics/controls better with 2 but for $3 used I picked up the first one and played it through.

Kingdom of Amalur: Reckoning - accessible and engaging.

Both of these are solo adventures, no parties.

One that was already mentioned, Dragon's Dogma, is being re-released 4/23 with added content. I played the original through a couple of times and experimented with various classes. You also create a "pawn" who is your main ally and recruit other players' pawns throughout the game. A different and kind of interesting mechanic.

Also I liked both Borderlands - SciFi FPS with RPG character development. Fun stuff.
