Found this via EvAv. Ben Kuchera from ArsTechnica claims to have information provided by The Mole, regarding an upcoming price slash on all 360 SKUs:

Early Sept price reduction on X360 hardware:
  • Arcade (no hard drive) to $199
  • Pro (60GB) to $299
  • Elite (120GB) to $399

The Mole

It seems that The Mole has a record of accurate rumors, and we all know what happens when MS leaks.

Full story here.

This will make things interesting for sure. I imagine that they will wait till the 20GBs are gone and then drop the bomb. I wonder what this will do for sales. It is a huge pricedrop for the Arcade, but I've never gotten the feeling that the Arcade sold well. Meanwhile it is another $50 drop for the other two SKUs. I realize they are keeping the Arcade SKU so that they have something on the market that is cheaper than the Wii, but it seems like they'd be better off dropping it completely and trying to be competitive with the 60GB.

Definately seems plausible and is something that I fully expect will happen when the supply of 20 GB HDD units are gone. They certainly wouldn't want to have released this kind of info before hand hence the mentioning of the 20 GB bundle as being a 'temporary' sale. The Arcade bundle has become a better deal compare to the HDD-less one in the past because at least now you get a memory unit plus some good arcade games with it. Pricing it at $199 is a great entry point for the more price concious consumer. With the HDDs being priced at $100 for the 60 GB and $150 for the 120 GB they can spread out the cost over time.

It's a nice step in the right direction, but there's still the nagging little issue of having a$400 sku in the mix. Honestly, the Elite looks like a bad value next to a 60 gig HDMI Pro, but the perception of lesser skus being gimped is a strong one. I honestly don't think this will make as big of a splash now as it would've had the Elite not been introduced.

$199, $299, $399 just doesn't sound as simple and appealing as $199, $299. I know more than a few people are going to look at the prices and think "Well, the 360 is $399."

I agree. But get rid of the Arcade. No one wants to take a system home and find out they can't save their games. And if they want to, they'd spend another $50. If they stuck to $299, included the 2 games with all the online goodies, it'd be a good selling point. It'd sell even better if they stuck something like Halo 3 or COD4 in there though.

Well actually like I posted earlier the Arcade bundle has become a better deal then it was in the past because it now includes a memory unit to save games on. I think it's a great starting point especially at only $199.

Wow, same price as the PSP now. I might pick up the 60 gig at that price, but we'll have to see how this year's later games turn out. That price + more harware reliability means that there is a good chance I (and possibly more ps3 owners) will pick it up.

Well I heard that they are releasing a new version that supposedly will be more reliable, but I meant that if they ever did make it more reliable, I'd definately pick it up. We'll have to see how this supposed new hardware will turn out.

Oh it does? My bad. I had a friend get an Arcade a little while ago, and complained to me he had to go get a memory card to save 3 out of the 4 games be bought with the machine.

But if it comes with a memory unit, then yeah, that's an awesome deal.

im waiting to see how much the install option helps with noise and heat. if it solves the problem, i wont be rewarding MS for putting out bad hardware by buying more.

Damn my friend just bought the Pro this Thursday. If the Arcade package will be $200, I might just buy one just to have as a backup XBOX 360 when my old one, which I should be getting back this week from repairs, craps on me again. Trust me, I expect my current XBOX 360 to break on me for a third time.

Thats because I sacrifice animals to mine weekly to stave off its hunger. The animal shelter is starting to give me weird looks every week time I come in and cackle to myself "yes ...yes you'll do nicely.."

Same here. I couldn't deal with the constant back and forth shipping that some 360 owners have to endure because of the RRoD, that really turns me off from purchasing the system. If they can either eliminate that problem or make it so it rarely ever happens, then I will pick one up.

Well I have a launch console that has been burning Forza 2 races for a HUGE chunk of time today (along with NBA 2K8 and a classic ESPN NFL 2K5 game online) and it still hasn't failed me. There are some that are doing just fine.

As for the main story, things just got a lot more interesting. Check this "exclusive":
