I stumbled across this article about Ryse and the character models change in Polygon count. Interesting read to say the least, with before and after pictures included. Thoughts?
I like the new look as it looks more realistic. The problem with a lot of games is that they look fake or video-gamey. In a game about Roman soldiers the armor and person should have a more realistic look, even if it isn't as sharp. That being said the gameplay will be the most important thing and that is still up in the air.
The newer definitely logos better. No more cheesy shine.
Except the scene thats being shown, it is raining, so you would expect the shiny gloss on the armor.
The old also had better shadows.
Crytek can always use an alternate specular map for wetter situations. But you don't want the armor always shiny like it is in the old images. Keep in mind, you cleaned metal armor like that by putting in a bag of sand and shaking it around. You'd oil it a bit afterward, but it would have more of a dull sheen than the tin foil look of the new images. So, not only does it look better, it looks more realistic. That said, would love to see them improve the normal a bit to add some dimpling and scratching to the armor. Still looks a little clean, but huge improvement.
Hm. I came in here expecting to see a turn for the worse for the game, but I'm glad to see that I was wrong. The new screens look promising. I hope that the game turns out well. I won't be playing it for a long time, but I love the ancient Roman setting.
They really need to just delay that game indefinitely and take a long hard look at starting over.
That's already been done. It was originally a Kinect title for the 360. It's time to give it some cement shoes and throw it in a deep quarry. Even the most recent previews I've read have said the game plays clunky, the visuals being majorly tweaked just a month before release are just more evidence of a troubled project.
Looks great still. I very much have enjoyed everything I've seen on this game. This looks like something that I can have a lot of fun with and would be a game I'd like to pick up along with a gret many of other games when I get an Xbox One. I'm quite impressed with the games already showcased for the system.
It would take a lot to get me interested in this game. And not because of poly count or triangle whoozits. I don't have issue with the look of the game. I just need to know it's not a QTE marathon. It could look like a PS2 game for all I care so long as it plays well.
Of course even if it comes out to rave reviews, it'll still get overshadowed by Dead Rising, InFamous, Killer Instinct, Killzone, Forza, Watch Dogs... you get my meaning.
I am actually surprised by a lot of the positive feedback for Ryse in this thread. Reading Shamus disdain for Ryse, I was beginning to think that no one cared for this game. Nice to hear that this not the case.

nope. Pre-ordered a Ryse bundle a few months back. Not enough down-to-earth melee action games, imo. The historical setting is just the icing.
The number of polygon alone is not enough to judge how good it will look. If they took the time need for the polygon and put that into calculating more normals then there could be an improvement in the look of the game.

I got to play this pos at Eurogamer expo and while it was just the multiplayer demo, the combat is pure trash. Just felt clunky. The hit detection was awful. I never felt like I was making contact. Enemies do a good job of surrounding and attacking you at once but it's a pain switching from one enemy to the next because it's automated. Which makes the combat feel extremely sluggish. The graphics were just plain awful but thats probably because it was mp.
It was easily the worst game I played at the Expo.

Still buying it because the SP looks pretty.
That last line was a bigger twist than the endings of the last six Shyamalan movies.
From all the videos, the gameplay is mediocre and clunky. It doesn't matter if its the best looking launch title , it looks repetitive, and rushed. They should have used this as a tech demo instead. :D
Ryse is going to be one of those garbage launch games that nobody cares about a year down the road and only gets some sales because it is one of the few games available. This game looks like shit. Graphics will hold this game together for some people, but not me.
The Ryse team bragged about how they have been in crunch so long that 11,500 dinners have been served. That tweet did not go over well with game developers who pointed out that crunch was hard on developers and their families (and sometimes cost them their marriages).
In an ill-advised tweet, the official Ryse account explained that "we will have served the crunching team more than 11,500 dinners throughout development." The hashtag #RyseFacts was plopped on the end for good measure.

No matter how much you neglect your family and health to make a game, it still ends up in the bargain bin eventually. #RyseFacts

@GGhalid@RyseGame Crunch is despicable. Long-term crunch is despicable. Loudly crowing about how much crunch your team works is despicable.

Devs have probably missed months of their kids growing up to make a stupid deadline. #RyseFacts
Isnt that like 3 years of dinners? They have been in the crunch for 3 years?
*Shrugs* Logically it depends on the size of the team. Perhaps they exaggerated in order to impress but its a safe bet they have been in crunch for a very long time.
