I don't know how many of you know or even love the Sacred Franchise after all the trouble it went through with it's first really great game that was unfairly called a Diablo II Clone which it absolutely wasn't, developed by Ascaron's Ruf, a german game developer that went bankrupcy a while after the games's release of it's Sequel, Sacred 2, which, in my opinion, wasn't as great anymore as the first Sacred, but anyways managed to live up to the franchise in some ways.

But now I've read the first few pieces of info about the development of Sacred 3, and some of them really seem to kill all the fun, as if the company who's in charge for Sacred now NEvER understood what Hack'n'Slay Games are about.

Some minor points:

- The lead developing platform now is the console, not the pc.
- No Stats anymore and also just 2 Skills at once, pretty much like Diablo III did it
- It's assumed that they still use a preset and not randomly generated world (though this for me isn't such a big thing, some games like Titan Quest for example executed this pretty well)

BUT...and here comes the BIG issue in my eyes:

- There will be NO Equip / Armor / Weapon Loot from Monsters, ALL they drop will be health & mana potions & Gold, you will ONLY be able to buy new equipment in cities and they haven't even decided yet how exactly it shall work.

The reasoning behind this is the most ridicolous I've EVER read so far, they said it's because "It is to uncomfortable to handle an inventory full of loot on a console"

I still have in mind how awesome Sacred 2 worked on the PS3, I also had never any problem with the inventory management there, so I think it's TOTAL BS to bring that up, especially when Diablo III & Torchlight II just have shown us that TOO MUCH change and "improvements" are NOT very welcome and we expect from an H'n'S-Game pretty much the same, just in it's unique phantasy universe!

So, what do you think about this so far planned gameplay changes to Sacred 3? At first, I was really happy that Sacred does return after so many years, but now I really don't want it anymore at all if they REALLY would do the stuff mentioned above.

I knew of but never played the other Sacred games. Those changes sound horrible though.

I agree. I don't mind that it's being developed on consoles first with PC being secondary. I really enjoyed the few hours I got to play Sacred 2 on my PS3. That said, their reasons for dropping loot is absolute BS. In fact, I'd argue it was a really well-done conversion from a PC-interface. And I really can't understand what they're thinking. Part of the fun of killing mobs is to see what kind of loot you can get. If all I'm going to get is potions and money, I've got significantly less interest in going out into the wilderness. There's something incredibly dissatisfying about having armor and weapons available only in stores. It makes it feel like it's not special...not like something you found in a random corner or after slaying a boss.

i never played the first sacred but i did play through sacred 2 and i'd definitely be comfortable calling it a diablo clone, so it's weird that they'd take out the 2 biggest parts of the formula (stats and loot). i don't really have a problem with it because, while i think those sorts of things are a nice sort of comfort food of gaming, there are better ways to depict combat. it just seems like a hard transition to make after sacred 2, which i wouldn't even say was about the combat; it's really about the looting and leveling (and yes, there's a big difference between buying equipment at a shop and finding it randomly after battle).

am i optimistic or pessimistic about it? neither yet. i haven't really seen any gameplay yet and it sounds like a lot is liable to change anyway.

taking out loot in a loot-grind is a bit like taking out aiming in an FPS. Maybe they've figured out something that I'm just not seeing, but clearly they have no notion of the joy of seeing a loot rainbow erupt from the corpse of a defeated enemy.

Anyway, loved the first 2 sacred games. The second was a little unstable at times, but it was worth putting up with to enjoy what that game had to offer. I prefer the sequel, actually, as build options were deeper, including the ability to evolve class specific skills, and the overall exploration was better. Both of them, however, blow away Diablo 3, which is total garbage, imo.

Sacred 2 is such a terrible game. Reminded me of Two Worlds 1, but dumber.

Not interested in Sacred 3.

Why that?

In my opinion, it's clearly not as good as Sacred 1 / Gold, but terrible?

If that are the plans for Sacred 3, then it is not much of a dungeon crawler RPG to say the least. I'm going to be honest, no offense but I played the original Sacred and while it was entertaining the first few hours, after a while it got boring because of its repetitive nature. (not to mention that while playing as a Seraphin I encountered a game braking bug that halted my possibility to continue the main quest, so that was a bust.) I set it aside for a few months and decided to give a second chance, but again the monotony set in and bored me to tears so I quit the game altogether.

I really liked Sacred 2. It was janky as hell and had some serious issues with actually conveying information (the stat screen and ability upgrades were far too convoluted, plus certain skills like blacksmithing were completely broken) and the constant loading when moving through towns got annoying...but man was it fun, and the world was absolutely huge. It also deserves credit for being one of the few console games that legitimately renders at 1080p (at least on 360). Of course, that's hampered a bit by the framerate and how truly abysmal the art style is and how dumb many of the character classes look. I tried playing the first game but time has not been kind to its graphics or interface. And this news about Sacred 3 sounds awful. Diablo 3, dumbed down though it might be, at least gets the loot system right. If they churn out a game with limited skills and no actual loot I might as well play Dungeon Siege 3 - another Diablo-esque game that managed to get almost everything that makes a hack and slash RPG compelling to play wrong. And Sacred 3 seems poised to make almost all of the same mistakes that game did.

yeah that does sound like BS... i don't think they can possibly have done much research on that.. as i can't really believe that it was much of an issue for that many players... loot worked well on the 360, it was easy to use, scrap, move and replace items.. you could even change setting for what you wanted to pick up as well, from everything to rare items only maybe this new game engine and systems has been made in a way that possibly makes it harder to have such a huge amount of loot and loot variations, where they maybe have toned it down to make more room for something else.. but that's just pure speculation... just can't buy that reason they have given, seems nonsensical, and even if it were true... it wouldn't take too long to come up with a better inventory system that makes it more easy and swift to deal with lots of loot... there are so many different ways to do this that to simply remove all loot just seems like a BS excuse and where it is done for some whole other reason. I am alright with buying things in shops as long as there is lots to choose from.... BUT, i'd hate to fight special monsters and bosses and not get any special rewards for it... that's a big part of the fun of exploring and fighting, because of the chance of getting rare treasure and items.... i mean if i look at a huge map and already know that if i travel to this or that place and kill a bunch of monsters on the way, and all i'll get is potions and gold.. then a big part of what makes the game fun is no longer there, not point in exploring, might as well make the game super linear, skip the huge map and go straight to the story quests, and then stop playing completely once you have finished the story.

Sounds like a 1/10 honestly.  Who the hell comes up with that loot system?

It's worth noting that Sacred 2: Fallen Angel wasn't hack & slash- it was an action RPG. What they are doing to the sequel sounds pretty ridiculous. I always loved a good ARPG. If they do away with loot drops, the amount of gold dropped will need to be increased. ARPGs have always used crappy loot as income.

If the things remained as Justforvisit wrote ... I`m horrified right now, and perhaps I`ll need a new word to describe my increased state of dread. Platform instead of PC base is disgusting. More commersial than usual and less options for the gamer. No STATS??! What RPG game will that be, I dare to ask? Two skills? Just like Diablo? Diablo 2 was far more Action game than RPG and Diablo 3 was even less impressive than the 2. Impressive movies, yes, definitely, but this was supposed to be a game not ordinary movie. The common traits between both games become disturbing and I`m really afraid for Sacred 3. Since I spent months on Sacred 1 and 2 ,and enjoyed every single hour, the retreat from the good old PC for the benefit of the platforms is ... knife in the back, to say the least. No good will come from it for the game itself and furthermore for the players. No armor beyond the pre-definied one is just one of the cursed platform restrictions that I personally hate along with the strange camera turnings.
Someone really want to kill the PC game branch.
