Just wondering...

My scariestexperience was playingocean house hotel level inVampire the masquerade bloodlines.

Scary is just an understatement, it was freakin terrifying. I mean it was so scary that i had constant shivers and was sweating like a pig and jumped like 5 times.

Don't know how did they manage to make it so scary(maybe its the flashysubliminal screen or something) but the only time i got more scared is when i had a gun pointed at my face(when got mugged).

So how was your scary game experience?

Dead Space. It's not scary per say, but I do freak out when I'm reloading, turn around, and then something is eating my face.

I was amazed at how scary that part was when I first played it. And hell, I've been through that part of the game at least 12 times and thing still catch me by surprise.

Though nothing in Vampire Bloodlines can top the visceral experience that is System Shock 2. Dated graphics, bright gamma... and yet still, somehow, there is a primaeval feeling of dread instilled by that game. It's been about three years since I stopped playing it last... and its about damn time I finish it.

First time I ever played Resident Evil and when you're walking down the hall way and the dogs jump thorough the window and attack you. I must have jumped 5 feet when that happened.

I'm not sure if it was scary, so much as they made me shiver and go very slowly. Both Condemned games had that affect on me. I only own the first one, but I really should just get the 2nd one...it's so cheap now. Especially being chased in the mansion in the second one. Good times.

FEAR 2.

That bit where you're walking through the hospital, you look through a window into a room and some woman's blood-soaked face rams up against the glass screaming at you.

The first time I encountered that I was sat in the dark playing with headphones turned way up.

I was playing in the dark in my room at the time. This scared the bejeezus out of me. Hell, playing RE2, 3 and others at times even when I knew when the dogs or Nemesis was coming it still would scare me.

"We Don't Go To Ravenholm," from Half-Life 2. Fiction doesn't often scare me (which is why I'm not a big fan of the horror genre), but that level got to me.

Playing Condemned: Criminal Origins for the first time, all alone on a dark January night with the lights off. At one point a bird actually bashed against the window outside and I just about then had a heart attack.

This was when I a quite a bit younger, but I remember playing Resident Evil 2 and being so scared I couldn't proceed any further and had to turn off the game. One specific area that always got my heart pumping was one of the hallways in the Police Station, where you walk down and if you get to close to the windows a barrage of hands burst through and grab you. That literally made me scream.

Resident Evil: Code Veronica for the Dreamcast at my bud's house.

We played in the basement at like 11pm at night, closed all the lights, etc...and hell, we were all literally hiding behind the sofas when sudden loud noises bursted through the TV. Note that we were only 10 years old so we probably wouldn't react the same way today.

I had a lot of moments in the Fatal Frame series. There's a time where you can't have a ghost touch you. If it touches you, you die. So having a ghost chase you around during that time is pretty creepy, especially when you're lost.

Also, in Siren, you have this ability to see through your enemies' eyes. I was messing around with that thing, and then I saw that one was looking at my back. I suddenly turned off that ability, turned around, and it was right there in front of me. That creeped me out.

So yeah, I started playing System Shock 2 again, this time with some really good mods, and its not only as good as I remember it, but the graphical improvements make it far scarier. Its darker, the enemies look better and the environment is much crisper, giving a greater sense of realism... and as a result, greater sense of dread. Playing in relative darkness with sound-isolating headphones is easily one of the most immersive and frightening experiences to ever be had in gaming. There are few games like SS2 out there, not only in terms of depth of gameplay, but in terms of depth of atmosphere.

What? We dont go to Ravenhold isnt scary at all. Some ravens and zombies in the dark. Damn you're scared easily.

Condemned certainly wasnt a walk in the park. The dark house at the beginning, the shop with the mannequins (they certainly added to the horror), the murderer's house are well done. It's not a milestone by any means but it is a quality game IMO. It achieves what it sets out to do.

I just got my delivery including Silent Hill for the PS One and I can't wait to start it up. Maybe it will be even better with 5.1 surround sound.

I don't play horror games. But I did play Metroid Prime.

Two parts really got to me:

  1. Finding the Thermal Visor, only to have all the rooms go dark and to have cloaked Shadow Pirates ramming into you.
  2. Returning to the Sunchamber, when the Chozo Ruins are infested with Ghosts. In this particular moment, you get a glimpse of a lone Chozo Ghost rushing down the hall (it's scripted; the glimpse is all you get, but it's still pretty freaky), and you continue to hear the Ghosts' cries as you follow.

System shock 2 absolutely. A lot of people have mentioned Silent Hill but in my opinion the sequel did it so much better (possible *SPOILERS* ahead for the 3 people in the world who want to play it and haven't yet). The realisation late on in the game that there is in fact no-one in the town, not even the monsters, and that the only reason they exist is to torture and punish the protagonist makes this a deeply psychologically disturbing game.

It's probably Dead Space for me. It's not jump-out-your-seat scary, but it's so tense that I need a break about every chapter. The biggest jump moment came from somewhere unexpected though: Bioshock 2. You forget how ugly and deformed the splicers are until you turn around and see one in your face.

Worst single moment was during Resident Evil 2 when a Licker smashed through a window in a hallway and came after me. I was totally not ready for that. Silent Hill 2 in general is the scariest game I've played according to my memory.

Bloodsuckers in STALKER games...
GOD I HATE THOSE THINGS!

When playing Clear Sky, all the time evreybody is talking about how effed up they are... Then you get a mission where they specificaly tell you that there is a bloodsucker in a village. It was mid day, and i was crawling trough that village, constantly looking evreywhere... They aint that hard to kill (well ok, i think its 4-6 shotgun blasts) but they are so hard to find.

Then I heard one of those buggers in a laboratory. I was scared stiff. I was sweating up buckets, and i was stiff and trembling. These thing made noises, you could see its eyes in the dark... But they were just messing with you. Then... WHAM... Game over.
