What's your favorite survival horror series, and why?

Personally, I'm torn between Resident Evil and Parasite Eve. Both series offered amazing storylines, exceptional graphics and artwork, chilling music scores and terrific gameplay while bringing innovation to the genre.

Silent Hill and Fatal Frame for me, because they still deliver old school survival horror, and resist the urge to become RE4 clones, and go the action-horror route. RE4 is good, but I hate that so many people think every game needs to be taking cues from it, or that RE4 is even survival horror anymore at all, when it's actually a different sub genre altogether now. Siren: Blood Curse also has my attention for this reason, consistency.

If Condemned counts as a survival/horror game, than I would pick it. Otherwise, the poor controls and substandard graphics of the genre do not appeal to me.

The zombie game Im devloping right now. It redfines SURVIVAL horror.

but basically it boils down to Silent Hill if I had to choose something thats out theire for retail.

Substandard graphics of the genre? Usually survival hoor games have really good graphics. Silent Hill is always known for great graphics, Resident Evil has always looked great, Siren, Fatal Frame had a very unique style. Doom 3 helped graphics get where they are today. Eternal Darkness was a great looking game. AND Alone in the Dark (the remake or sequel whatever they wanna call it coming out soon) looks amazing, espcially the fire and destruction.

I know what you mean. Resident Evil really does need to recapture the chills and suspense of the first two.

Substandard graphics? The Resident Evil games on PSone were cutting edge stuff for their time, the RE Remake for the GC is STILL graphically stunning, (RE4 is actually aging more rapidly) and Silent Hill 2, 3, & 4 are still very pleasing to the eyes, and have, through their presentation, a very real and tangible atmosphere of persistant creepiness and foreboding. Alone in the Dark, in fact, looks to be geared to set the bar for the genre this gen, and is looking utterly amazing.

Let's not forget Resident Evil 5. It offers impressive artwork and graphics as well as improved controls and AI.

the best game in horror genre is definitely Fatal Frame series because its scary, so its the only game reach its goal

however, RE4 is really fun to play and i beat the game without stopping. well its also the shortest... RE games were never scary, only 1 for its time.

i like Silent Hill for its chilly atmosphere but after playing Fatal Frame its child's play now...

All in all, gotta go with Resident Evil. The series might have had a dud or two - but it's given me countless hours of entertainment. I would argue that the Condemned series could be considered survival horror, and it gets my runner-up pick.

Silent Hill 2 and 3 are on the XBOX I believe. Im not sure if they are compatible on the 360 so check the backwards compatibility list. Silent Hill : Homecoming which is coming out later this year should be coming to 360 also.

Thanks. Some franchises carry a story well, some do not. How well would you recommend playing through them all in order?

The first Silent Hill is the scariest game I've ever played. It's even scarier than any Horror film I've ever seen. The second one has better graphics and a clearer storyline, but it's just not as disturbing as the first. Haven't played the third one, and the 4th is a little disappointing, mainly because of the huge amount of backtracking and the fact that it's not even set in the town of Silent Hill. You don't need to play them in order, as each has its own self-contained story. Silent Hill 2 & 4 are available on Xbox, and they're both Backwards Compatible with the 360.

Anyway, Silent Hill is my favourite Horror series, followed by Condemned and Fatal Frame. I would also suggest Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth to anyone with a Microsoft console. It's a game based on the short stories of the famous horror writer H.P. Lovecraft, and it contains some truly freaky moments that you won't easily forget. It's a great game, and it's also Backwards Compatible. So seek it out, you won't be disappointed.

If you love Silent Hill 1 so much and you havent played Silent Hill 3, you need to go out there and play it. Its the best of the series gameplay wise. Though I enjoy silent hill 1 more, for many reasons. But Silent Hill 3 has a much more connected story with 1 than 2 did. I reccomend all of them, even 4.

Its a great game. It scares you in much more "interesting" ways than any other horror game, definately DEFINATELY worth a play, one of if not my favorite game for Gamecube.

The amount of action in the game may put it in a sub-genre, but doesn't that just make it a better game? Also, I think RE4 clearly fits the definition of survival-horror. The volume of enemies requires plenty of action to survive, and the game is chockful of horror elements. The dark and ominous environments and spooky characters give the game a very creepy feel, and there are plenty of scary moments. One incident that always comes to mind is early in the game when you come to one of the small shacks along the path to the village. You enter a very small confined space, take the ribbon off the table, then turn toward the door to see a woman impaled to and hung from the wall with a pitchfork through her head. That shocked the hell out of me the first time I saw it.

Im not sure if its truly a "survival horror" game, but The Suffering is the only game thats ever managed to truly make me worried about turning a corner, ok the sequel was pants but I would love to see a remake of the original.

Ive always been a big fan of the Resi series and 5 looks to take the genre in a whole new direction as does the upcoming alone in the dark which in my opinion is what the "Survival Horror" genre needs its starting to become a tad stale.
