I was wondering if a model 1 genesis is comptaible with a model 2 Sega CD or do you have to use the first version of the Sega CD.

IIRC, Model 1 consoles can use both versions of the Sega CD, but the Model 2 Genesis has to use the Model 2 Sega CD. If you get a Model 2 Sega CD, though, you'll want to make sure that it comes with a base extension to support the left side of the Model 1 Genesis.

The Mega Drive model 1 works perfectly with the two versions of the Mega-CD. The Model 2 is the one who will only work with a model 2 Mega-CD.

The base expansion should come with the Mega-CD package. (or at least that's how it was sold originally) It is preferably to use t, However it is not necessary and you can do without it and the system will work perfectly.

Those of you claiming that a model 2 genesis won't work with a model 1 sega cd are wrong. It's perfectly doable, but it's freaking ugly (even moreso than a Model 1 genesis hooked up to a Model 2 sega cd). Your best bet aesthetically though will always be using a model 1 cd with a model 1 genesis and a model 2 cd with a model 2 genesis, although model 1 cd drives are a lot rarer (they were more expensive to produce).

That's good to hear if true, since I don't see why a Model 2 Genesis wouldn't work in a Model 1 Sega CD. It's still the same expansion port and all, it would just look out-of-place. Now, if I could just get my hands on an affordable Sega CD, preferably with a backup save RAM cart and maybe a means of bypassing any region locks to play those import titles...

Or just get the CDX. One small piece to saves space, and power connectors too. :)

except the CDX is extremley expensive. When it came out it cost 400 dollars which was more then just buying the Genesis/Megadrive and Sega Cd sepretley.
