Anyone know of any good websites aside from the obvious, amazon and ebay?

I'd like to get the model 2, a few controllers and some games. No stores carry them locally and I have been able to find some private sellers but they want to sell their entire collections, like gen, cd, saturn, several hudnred games. Good deal ultimately but pricey and more than what I want or need.

Sorry, I really wouldn't know.

My only advice is to make sure the system is in top condition. You shouldn't buy an old CD-based system otherwise.

Also check it has the power adapter. The Japanese Model 2 ones didn't came with one and that was a big annoyance.

Ideally, the Multi-Mega is the more convenient system as honestly even though I love the MEGA-CD, the system is such a pain to set up I'd rather rip my games play them on the PC.

Too bad that system didn't do it for me though, since the two system I tested skipped on a couple of my games And they were both brand new. So I just got rid of it.

Yeah I wouldn't buy it used unless it was from someone like a collector who ahd taken very good care of it and could show me it worked. I've been burned a few times recently with Gen controllers.

What do you mean by it's a pain to set up? I never owned a Sega CD when I was a kid but I wanted one and I'm kind of on a kick right now, picking up the systems and games I wanted but couldn't get.

You have two plug two AC adapters - the MegaDrive one and the Mega CD one. This is by much the biggest annoyance.

Then you have to use a separate audio cable too if you want to take advange of the superior Mega CD sound.

Ya, it's damn annoying. I bought my Sega CD at a flea market a couple of years ago and the guy sold it to me with the wrong AC adapter; gave me another Genesis one. Had to scour the internet for the right one.

Why would you even want that thing? Might be the worst system ever.

You can find Sega CD consoles and games at just about any place that sells retro games. The only place I'd check online for a good deal on one is craigslist; many people have the misconception that it is a crap system so they will occasionally sell them for next to nothing. Other than that, I'd check thrift stores and flea markets in your area because they tend to find their way to these places from time to time. However, if you buy one from a flea market make sure it is clean and in good shape overall, and make sure all the adaptors come with it too. You'll end up saving a ton of money this way. Likewise, Sega CD games can be found at these locals every so often.

I have NEVER seen one of these at my local used game shop (I'm in Northern California). I see plenty of Genesis, Dreamcast, and Master Systems, and the occassional Saturn. But never once a Sega CD. I only see these on eBay and Craigslist.

I live in the Denver area and I can think of at least 3 retro game stores that currently have them in stock. Up until about a month ago, I even knew a used media store that had one for $30. Maybe I'm just lucky :p

Oh no. I've watched that episode and he goes to great lengths to show it in a negative light. My buddy has one and just playing some of the games is just awkward and the loading is pretty bad on some of them; which he covers in the review and i cosign. But in all seriousness, I'd just rather play the Genesis because the games are just a little easier in my opinion.

I have never seen a Sega CD or Saturn in store anywhere. I had to buy them both online. Genesis and Dreamcast yes, but not those two. Just make sure you're buying from a good seller.

lol I just didn't like playing most of the games. and compared to the Genesis or SNES, or anything that was moderatley successful, it just wasn't as enjoyable to play.

I've checked all the local retro game stores. They have every system except the Sega CD. I've checked Craigslist and other online private sellers. Basically all I can find is Amazon or ebay and if I have to go that route I will, but the prices seem a little steep and I'd prefer to pay cash as I have a hard enough time paying down my credit card when I'm always buying stuff online.

Clearly.

I was just wondering if anyone knew of any other places I hadn't thought of.

Also, what is a good price to pay new and what is acceptable used, if it's in good operating condition and has all the peripherals.

The novelty that had Sega CD being labeled a unique console back in the day was how the CD format made it possible to make games more visually inspiring and movie-like via its FMV~ish capabilities. Voices in video games back in the early 90's were a big deal and we, as kids, were blinded enough to the point that we'd overlook everything else.

Console-selling games like Lunar and Sonic CD have been ported, the novelty of its voice acting/CD Audio/FMV has worn off over time and has not stood the test at all, and all we're left with are console-exclusives like Snatcher to judge its worth aside from its status as a techincal marvel and marketing blunder.

Only reason I cared for it was for Snatcher and Captain Tsubasa, both of which I've had the chance to play and beat, so unless you're a collector I don't think it's worth owning unless you wanna experience its Japanese library. And I honestly don't blame those who sell it cheap. Only collectors would inflate its worth for the sake of collecting.

I actually own two model 2's from two different places of purchase. Just as you said Ebay was an obvious one, and I got a pretty fair deal there. The other place I used was Craigslist. I just kept checking week after week until I saw a pretty large bundle of games with the system connected to the Genesis at a really good price. I figure you've looked at these places already, but I can't see getting much of a better deal unless you get lucky at a garage sale or something. Good luck though either way!

The Mega-CD was a decent system back then in spite of how people seem to love whining and moaning about it today.

Unless you were rich or totally dedicated to the system, there was just no way you could afford all of the good games that were coming out for it without neglecting the other top-notch releases for the Mega Drive or whatever other system you had at the time.

I was still purchasing Mega-CD games well after the Saturn had already been released.

And while its true that that SEGA did tried to shove the whole "FMV is the best next thing" into your mind, you had to be a pretty misinformed or gullible player to fall for it. I don't remember any single game publication that gave a single word of praise to all those bad FMV games back then. They all got tired and tired again of saying just how godawful those FMV games were.

Personally I can say I never bought stuff like NIGHT TRAP, SEWER SHARK and the like. And without even playing them they just seemed like very bad games to me at the time. To me it was common sense.

Yet for some strange reason you get all these people saying how they owned a MEGA CD back then and how the system sucked big time because all they played was precisely those awful games.

Also, back then nobody cared about games like SNATCHER, that one got popular well after its time.

The game was indeed given surprisingly good coverage by the media as well as excellent overall scores, but it was released only days away from other mainstream stuff like DONKEY KONG COUNTRY and it just passed by nearly unnoticed.

There was this shop around here that got only 3 copies of the game. I purchased one, somebody else bought the other, and the one left was on their shelf for a couple of years easily before somebody went and bought it.

Overall, I just find it very strange how these so called Mega CD owners never played or so they say never heard of stuff like DARK WIZARD, DENNIN ALESTE, POPFUL MAIL etc. and instead only winded up playing crap like MORTAL KOMBAT and SEWER SHARK.

Hell, I've never purchased a system before seeing some games I liked. That's the reason why I never bought a Super 32X and saw it as a terrible system, but I guess that's just me.

The Super Famicom is loaded with awful games. The Mega Drive had its share too. However, you don't see people focusing only on their bad games.

I suppose some people just love to complain and hate for the sake of it.

Thanks.

Yeah checked Craigslist as well. I'm second guessing this right now. Maybe I'll get a Saturn instead or just keep building on my Gen library.

I found a Saturn yesterday with 22 games for $100.

I just need to wait before I buy it. I've honestly never wanted a Saturn so I'm not sure if it's just my combined Sega hard-on and the find of a good deal or if I'd actually want one. I wanted a Sega CD when I was a kid because it seemed so cool. Only recently have I realized out of all the retro systems how it's been the hardest to find and the most overpriced. I did want a Dreamcast though so at some point I will get one of those but I see deals everywhere so I'm not rushing that one yet.

Hence why I'm asking around about the Sega CD. It seems priced for its' rarity and not its' quality, which I understand but I'm not really willing to pay for a system just to have it if it's not worth it.

The Saturn as I udnerstand is pretty hard to find games for, even when it was a new system. I'm open to any genres, I will play anything really. I will look up the list of Saturn games later and post them. I just remember there is 22 of them.

No it's a private sale on kijiji. I don't know if that's a Canadian only thing, so sorry if I'm telling you what you already know, but it's a Craigslist style site for selling/buying used goods and services. I work out of town for weeks at a time and I just left today so I told the guy I might buy it when I come back if he still has it.

Looking up some of thiose games online and they don't sell for cheap. I'm still wary of this system since I know games are hard to come by and I don't want to pay a lot anytime I want another one. I am undecided but I will probably end up passing on this and just stocking my Genesis collection until I decide to pick up a Dreamcast.
