Sega would have done better.

If they focused on games and advertising (Mostly for games) then focusing on hardware like they did. I mean if they actually tried getting game support with there console before the NES came out then Nintendo would not have secured (Illegally but secured) all those games Sega never got with the Snes. Thus they ended up with a console of less then 30 games or so.

Not cool.

I don't know what you're talking about.

The Mega Drive got over 900 games and was the dominating system throughout most of its generation. The Super Famicom only surpassed it worldwide until late 94 or so when the MD was already 6 years old.

? Just when did you ever mentioned Atari? You said SEGA and "all those games they never got with the SNES".

That's what I read.

And no SEGA console ever got only 30 games. Even the SG-1000 got around 100 games.

More like read what you're typing, because it still makes no sense to me.

Sega are failures... I loved watching them crash and burn after they went out on viscous marketing campaigns against Nintendo... They are the reason for the kiddy label.

nintendo are the reason for rating games as they were so pathetic back in 93 to go to senate to complain to senators about sega kicking their asses presumably due to violent games (sonic was sega's best selling game by far)

They did that to survive. Had they not we'd have no PlayStation and Xbox. We's probably just be getting the Gamecube seeing as to how Nintendo hates change. Sega did a lot for the industry like making games cool. Sure Mario more was fun but Sonic and Shinobi and MK were seen as cooler. It's just that they did some lousy things with the hardware. The 32X came at the same time as the Saturn. The Saturn was a surprise launch and hard to program. They then killed the Saturn just 3 years in and launched the Dreamcast. The Dreamcast was powerful, but not strong enough and no one supported it. It seems like after that they just kind of gave up in everything and became a shovelware company. I wish Sega would've ended up like a big publishing company or get supported by MS

Yeah, I'm trying to get the "30 game" part?? The Genesis and Sega Master System had over 200 games on each system. While I understand the decision to go to manufacturing software alone and no hardware after the Dreamcast, I would rather see Sega in the hardware industry right now. Sega brought a different direction when they did hardware and software for their system. Something that seems absent in the industry right now. I could only imagine what they could come up with if they brought a new console into the mix. The VMU setup on the Dreamcast was truly innovative!

While I understand the dislike for Sega if you are a die-hard Nintendo fan, I have to disagree that Sega was a failure. Yeah they had some not-so-successful endeavors, like the Saturn, although it did well in Japan. The Genesis and Sega Master System were extremely popular. The Dreamcast, while popular, couldn't compete with the corporate giants like Sony and Microsoft. I can't help looking at that gorgeous small snippet of Link in HD! Looks very impressive! Hopefully the final version looks that way.

I do understand the hardware portion. Sega just kept trying to get a jump on the market share, which I can understand, but it just never seemed to work for them. Especially with the later consoles.

The Sega Genesis was my go to system, I just grew out of the system. The PSX was a far superior system.

Sega could've been successful if they backed their own hardware up a bit more and stuck with their franchises. I'd say they were a victim of their own laziness, and the DC's proof of that. (lots of arcade games, lack of platformers, some ugly ports etc)

Anyway, Saturn and Genesis were my favorite.

I'd say Sega CD, but I need more of a reason than Solstar.

lazyness?? are you f'n kidding?? sega was totally the opposite of lazy/ they kept making new hardware and new franchises and never milked anything out. they kept renewing and reinventing in every possible way. formats like cd's. hardware, sound, genre's, arcades'the fact we play 3d games now like we do is thanks to sega's lazyness?? sega out of the hardware business real reason is they were ahead of their time constantly. shenmue has a huge cultfollowing now in the days of games like heavy rain but back then people thought it was boring.

the sega of today is nothing in terms of greatness or inovation compared to what they were while doing hardware. they had magic. even sega developpers themselves like yu suzuki and yuji naka have said that. it probably will never happen again indeed but that doesn't make it any less ashame

The SEGA brand name might not be as common or renown as it was before in the west, but in Japan is still among the more distinguised ones. Just google "Club SEGA" and you'll see. They have arcade clubs and amusement parks all over Japan. They're practically everywhere among the Japanese video game-related geek culture. Too bad we're at a point where nobody really bothers to bring their arcade hits outside of Japan anymore.

I know that most current gen gamers probably grew up with online gaming and so they most likely never set foot on a game center while they were still popular. But nevertheless I just don't understand how SEGA's most important background always seems to be left out.

The consumer division, the SEGA games and consoles you know, were only their side bussiness really, and were always maintained by the arcade division, always. Even the success of the Sonic games is nothing compared to what games like Virtua Fighter or Daytona USA made for the company at the game centers. While the Saturn was failing in the western market, almost every single arcade game they put out was a huge smash hit.

SEGA and NAMCO are the biggest and more successful arcade companies in history, you just can't ignore a thing like that.

Man, that goes for a lot of Japanese companies. Barely anyone makes as much games or is as creative as before.

Hell, what is Konami today? Nothing compared of what they were in previous generations. They barely make any non-arcade games in-house anymore and rely on outsource studios to handle their popular franchises. From what I know they have also in fact disbanded most of their old guard studios.

Your post brings back memories of when my friends and I would venture to a place called Putters Palace, which had all of the latest arcade titles, and a miniature golf course.$1 gets you 4 tokens! Those really good games required 2 to 4 tokens! I remember investing many tokens in Mortal Kombat 2, Primal Rage, Killer Instinct, and Area 51. Back then home consoles couldn't match the arcade cabinets, in terms of visuals, sound, etc., now game consoles are giving us amazing visuals. I do miss the arcades though, and it still would be something nice to be able to take the kids, spend some $$, and have a blast. Just wanted to flash back. lol

TC, go to Youtube and watch the "Sonic History" segment that came with the Sonic Generations collector's edition DVD. It's a great insight into Sega's obstacles and how they tried to cope with Nintendo's dominance back in the 16-bit era. It even discusses the end of the hardware days with Dreamcast's demise.

Watching it you get the sense that they felt rushed and the only way they could outtake Nintendo was to beat them to the market hardware-wise eveytime. They basically had no other alternative. They were doomed once Sony chipped in from way back in the 32-bit era.

I would buy a next gen system from Sega even if it only had first party titles! I guess if I could ever be considered a "fanboy" it would be to Sega. I grew up playing Sega consoles, starting with the Sega Master System, then graduating to the Genesis, after that It took me a while to save up for a Saturn. My best friend growing up had a NES, and I remember going to his house and having a ball playing it, but I wanted something different. My thinking was If I get a Sega Master System he can come over and play all the good games from Sega, then I can go to his house and play all the good games from Nintendo.I never looked back after the SMS. Games like Shinobi, Pro Wrestling, Reggie Jackson Baseball, Space Harrier 3D, Alex Kidd, Evander Holyfield Boxing, Rastan,etc.. It was also one of the only systems that actuaaly had a hidden game within the system! I think it's hold both buttons and Dpad to the left when you turn it on.

We would have still had Playstation and Xbox xonsidering Sega had nothing to do with the Sony Nintendo deal and MS went in to still the market share because of console gaining more sales in gaming than PC's.

Point of the thread being that you're mis-informed? Like I said, they had no alternative/option but to focus on besting the competition hardware-wise or face being second place.

And excuse me for linking you to a very insightful piece of video game history.
