A brilliant article about how parents truly fail! And they really do

"What They Play, the self proclaimed "parents guide to video games," released the results of a survey yesterday revealing that parents found their children watching pornography and drinking beer as more acceptable than playing certain video games, namely Grand Theft Auto IV.

The ridiculousness of it all breaks down as such: 49% of respondents most feared their children smoking marijuana and 19% were concerned about them playing Grand Theft Auto, while only 16% were worried about exposure to pornography and 14% to their kids drinking alcohol.

Before I systematically dismember this absurdity – surely a byproduct of playing such violent games like Grand Theft Auto and Manhunt – let's hear what Cheryl Olson, co-author of Grand Theft Childhood, had to say about the findings.

"To some parents, videogames are full of unknowable dangers. While researching for Grand Theft Childhood, parents we spoke with in focus groups often bemoaned the fact that they didn't know how to use game controls - and felt unequipped to supervise or limit video game play. Of course, parents don't want their children drinking alcohol, but that's a more familiar risk." "

Children aren't supposed to play Grand Theft Auto.
And the parents should supervise this, but the problem is that parents don't see this as a parenting problem.
Oh no, It's the Game Developers fault.

Some of it seems like semantics. They're not worried about their kids drinking or watching porn, maybe because they don't think they will. Why worry about something you don't is going to happen? Also, maybe they're not thinking "Are you worried will go on drinking binges every weekend" or "are you worried your child will lock themselves in their room and watch porn 24 hours a day". I don't know, I'm just saying it's easy to twist the words around to fit whatever argument you'd like to make. Maybe it's because the parents interviewed watched porn and drank beer when they were young and figured "I turned out alright" but they never played GTA.

I think a mature discussion about this subject is the #1 hardest thing to acheive on the internet. Broken studies, parents and parenting groups that have very little education on the subject, and frothing gamers that refuse to hear word one that might be critical of the hobby.

Since I've joined, that was probably the smartest and truest thing I've heard in these forums.

Not to be rude, but you haven't exactly been a member for a so long time now have you? But then again, I agree that it's one of the smarter things I have read.

But most things are hard to discuss on the internet, it's way easier to say your own opinion about it. And it's easier to lie!

Why do parents get angry at game developers if they shouldn't be letting their kids have the game? Don't start throwing lawsuits, just DON'T BUY THE GAME. I mean, this whole thing could be solved that easily.

Its only because parents are scared of the unknown. Porn, beer, and weed have all been around in their life times. Videogames have not, therefore they are prone to be alot more protective of kids from this new medium.

Good point, it was like that with action movies, still are, but not that much. Because they understand it now, so I could go with that idea. They fear the unknown.

Parents these days are stupid and listen to anything the media through at them, whatever happened to forming ones own opinions and being a smart parent
