I really like the Cotton Series, Einhander, Radiant Silvergun, Ikaruga, and Gradius 3. I would not say that I'm a veteran, but I do enjoy shumps very much lately.

U.N. Squadron definately ranks up there. I love how you could buy new planes. The game lag helped sometimes too which helped for all of the on screen carnage lol

Gradius paved the way. It incorporated many concepts that became genre standards: Options, enemy formations, item droppings and such. R-Type just followed along 2 years later, and had little influence in the genre, with the Arcade sequels actually being worse than the original, and R-Type III behind the times by 1994 standards. Actually the few shooting games that were influenced by it, such as Pulstar and Last Resort, share most of its flaws like slow gameplay and uninmpressive mechanics.

I find it hard to believe that any true fan of shooting games would say that R-Type had little influence in the genre, and that what few games it influenced were not good. Go play Xexex, then, Panzer_Zwei.

I have actually, a lot, and quite possibly on a deeper level than you.

And if you think this Konami game was influenced by R-Type, then obviously you need play more shooting games.

Silkworm on amigaTheLegendKnight

Silkworm was awesome - better than silkworm 2

Do you remember a shmup on the amiga called 'Hybris'?

My favourite shoot em up though was Xenon II: Megablast - the music was amazing and the graphics were bitmap brothers vintage.
