Shocking report: People imprisoned and tortured to farm WoW gold

We heard about chinese WoW sweatshops before, where underpaid people play the game for over 15 hours a day to farm gold which is later sold to WoW users, but this report goes even beyond that: it tells the story of a man (and many others like him) who were imprisoned and forced to play the game all day and most of the night to generate virtual gold. If a set daily quota was not met, he would get tortured and beaten by his captors.

I'm not going to bash on MMOs now, but one thing has to be made clear: if you ever bought WoW gold from someone online, chances are the seller was one of these slavers. These horrible realities are allowed to exist because people keep buying what these poor slaves produce. Next time you receive an offer to buy gold, well now you know what's behind it.

The only way to stop this is to boycott gold farmers, it's the players who have to do this.

Very sad... Farming WoW gold is one of the "cushiest jobs" in those prisons, however. It's brutal all around.

Wow God**** this is ****in sad and this is the first time I'm venting in Gs because this really pisses me off, I know there are mis-leading people out there but this is just over the top, first of all they're doing slavery, second are their minds twisted? using WoW, seriously? Ugh, this is gonna give such a bad rep on video games, again

Well, our us prison system/crime school program has continued to fail for years. Last time i saw the statistics the U.S. led developed nations in the % of population imprisoned. Maybe China has figured out a better way to stop repeat offending.

It gives the prisoners something to do other than fight, form gangs, and riot. Give them a job or a purpose... if they don't want to participate, then give them a reason to want to participate the next time.

Oh man... that sounds horrifying. There really needs to be a way to put a stop to all this for good if stuff like that is really happening out there.

Joke asside this does prove how important MMO games and worlds have become. I think in a few years if your virtual company will go down it might as well in reality too. It also shows these games in a new light - as instruments of corruption and torture as ironic as that sounds.
