Sony running ads marketing PS4's 2/20 meeting.

Funny coming from a company that has just as many BS fitness games.

But this shows they are likely going to focus on core games in this meeting so this is always a good sign. Let the console wars begin!

MS emphasized Kinect way more this gen than Sony emphasized Move. So I'm guessing Kinect has more fitness games.

Anyway all the rumors so far point to MS digging themselves a hole. I have to honestly wonder what they are thinking. Then again after RROD and Kinect maybe now they think people will buy anything they make so long as their marketing is forceful enough.

To be fair they emphasied it more because it sold much better. The move was a complete failure and I think Sony just wanted to sweep it under the carpet.

Interesting that Microsoft has the time to talk shlt, but apparently has a case of dry mouth when it comes to all the talk about their system banning used games and forcing Kinect on everyone.

This also doesn't seem like a cool, confident little bit of trash talk, but nervous resentment. We'll see soon!

MS to Sony:

http://www.gamespot.com/news/microsoft-majority-of-consumers-wont-know-about-playstation-4-announcement-6403894

I should have clarified that I view Sony's remark as a response to Microsoft's earlier remark that no one would care or notice about the PS4 announcement, and how people should stop wishing for something new and just be happy with what they have essentially.

I will say that the Sony statement seems to bolster the idea that conventional gaming will be in force for the unveil, but I get worried anytime anyone starts talking about "change,' because usually that involves asshattery of some sort.

The Move didn't put up the insane numbers the Kinect did, but 15 million units (which probably translates into about 7.5 million users) is nothing to sneeze at.

Oh ok.

Yeah I saw that. THey are kinda right in that only core gamers seem to know about this event. How many people do you personally know who know the PS4 is getting revealed in five days? EVERYONE knows when the next iPhone rehash is being shown for the first time. MS does know how to market and generate hype. They revealed the original Xbox on MTV and I have a feeling they will up themselves and have a one hour special on national primetime television. Sony's having their reveal on a live webcast during rush hour in NY. :P

Other than that, f*ck everything else that guy had to say. The more i think about how MS was due for a new console way back in 2011 the more I get upset. They have dragged this generation on for TWO f*cking years just to make some profit. Profit at the expense of the industry. F*cking shameful. You were right. Kinect really f*cked us over in ways we didnt even imagine.

Yoga isn't gaming, but its a profitable niche I don't see going away. Why buy an aerobics dvd which just kind of always plays the same video at the same speed when you can buy something which focuses on you and where you're at in terms of conditioning?

Well, it's anecdotal, but the gym my wife goes to has places to hold an iPad on top of the machines now and they even have a site you can log onto with your tablet that adjusts the workout based on level. I think that's really the issue... these casual consumers like my wife are not so easily gotten as one might think, and further, the video game market has done NOTHING to advertise to them. You can't sell yoga games if people who practice yoga don't know such a game exists. Also, the iPad (or tablets in general) are now cultural icons that have a higher awareness with those kinds of people than consoles ever will.

Did you have any doubts? With the specs and the first party studios they have, I am expecting them to have an incredible conference. It's sony so it will be boring at times, but content wise we will see lots of awe-inspiring games.

Core gamers are all that matters, at least at this point. We have to remember that the PS2 was a core gamer centered console and it did JUST FINE by catering to that base. In fact, that's the thing I think Sony realizes that Microsoft never really got. Sony has done this shlt before. They know a market exists out there where one machine can sell 120 million machines with core gamers. Microsoft doesn't have that confidence because they've never attained those kinds of numbers, so they have to try all kinds of lame voodoo and fvckery to try to get people on board with flail controllers and a bunch of apps.

As for hype with Microsoft, I really don't know what there is to hype any more. Halo of course. Forza doesn't sell all that well. Gears may be a dead franchise now, we'll see. Alan Wake didn't sell all that great. Crackdown was pawned off to a team that ruined the sequel. If they want to get people hyped, they need to come out with some new material, because that cupboard is looking bare, and what is there is stale.

Well let the 8th Generation Console wars begin. Yes Yoga isn't gaming. Jump off the top of the roof of Microsoft headquaters. Sony would be wise to retire the PSmove. As much as Kinect is useless for gaming. PSmove is just as bad. It is time to kill it off. If Sony were to focus soley on traditional videogames ditch the PSmove. Which is a copy of the Wii-mote Controller. Then Playstation 4 will easily win the 8th generation.

Sony will have to explain the new controller. Which seems very Wii U ish?

Sony made PS move, so they aren't exactly innocent when it comes to jumping on the motion control bandwagon.

That being said I am interested to see what Sony will offer with the PS4, as well as Microsoft with the Xbox 720.

Sony should know better than anyone the pitfall of having something that doesn't easily translate to better games blowing out the cost of the console. Blue ray in the PS3 is one of the main reasons it was $500-600 competing against the $300-400 Xbox 360 early on. The games did not show enough of a difference to justify the price difference. It could be the same case with built-in kinect depending on how much it will cost them to include it in the system. Though I could see MS simply eating the loss regardless of production costs as I can't imagine they will price their system above the competitor at launch. They ate massive losses with the Xbox before on hardware because their main focus has always been marketshare since they entered the console industry.

I just hope MS doesn't buy out any Japanese studios next-gen like this one, there's nothing in their first party stuff to make me even remotely consider an Xbox.

I've been fine with the extended generation. There are still a ton of fun and interesting games hitting (think X-Com, Far Cry 3, Ni No Kuni, Journey and Left 4 Dead).

Its also worth keeping in mind that unlike the old days the future isn't teasing us from some other place. Arcades are dead and nobody makes console type games which seek to use the prodigious power of modern PCs so there is effect no one to show us what we're missing.

Well, we've seen glimpses of the future in the demos for Star Wars 1313, Watchdogs, FF Agni's Philiosphy and MGS Ground Zeroes demo. And yes, we wont know what we are missing until ALL devs show us what their vision is.

I dont blame you guys for being content with playing on inferior hardware. Hell, we have multiple Wii threads going on right now where Nintendo fans are defending nintendo putting out last gen hardware again and again. Sadly, it's a fact that the video game industry is one industry that needs an upgrade every five to six years or gaming gets left behind. Now the developers are forced to develop on hardware from 2005, and the end result is a safe, extremely boring and predictable array of sequels  that has resulted in the industry sales dropping heavily three years in a row. For any other industry, that would've been a wake up call, but here we had M$ being content to rake in profit for two years instead of actually moving the industry forward. Same goes for Sony, although they only delayed it for a year. But had they stuck with their original plan of releasing the PS4 in 2012, we would've seen God of War Acsension, The Last of Us and Beyond on the PS4. And as good as those games look right now, I can promise you their vision has been severely hampered by developing on this antique hardware.

Lots of people are content with playing the same Halo 4, the same Gears of War, the same Assassin's Creed year after year. But those people are the reason why we are in 2013 and the only next gen console we have right now is the Wii U.

I agree, I mean, even in shltty games like Aliens: Colonial Marines, the visuals on the PC are so much better than the consoles it's not even funny. I just find it odd to hear people petitioning to hold back technological advancement when this generation has gone on three years beyond the average accepted life cycle for console tech. I just don't see the logic behind it. At all.

At all.

Because I've enjoyed games released in the past few years you're comparing me to Nintendo fans :P? X-com is a franchise that has been dead since the 90's. There was nothing safe or predicatable about its sequel. Neither Ni No Kuni nor The Walking Dead are sequels (nor was either of them 'safe'). I acknowledge that hardware power is a tide that lifts many boats (allowing for linear and radical improvement in game design) but static hardware isn't the reason for (the usual, perpetual) me-tooism that is the guiding philosophy of many games. Gamer conservatism and designer timidity are to blame for that. Yearly iterations of many popular non-sports franchises are a new reality which new hardware isn't going to change.

I am as excited about anyone about the new hardware as anyone because I recognize that technology is a rising tide that can lift all boats and that some designers will use the power given to them by new hardware in radical ways that enhance the game experience (even linear improvement to stuff like AI, level geometry, framerate, physics, special effects and enemy count will be quite cool) but as I've said to Nintendo defenders who stated with sincerity that they believe that new controllers will make for new games, at the end of the day, hardware only opens up possibilities. What matters most are people.

Throughout my almost 36 years of gaming most designers have been conservative. That won't change, though as always the industry will change and improve due to the linear improvements of the conservative designers, the radical improvements of the bold minority, and the willingness of conservatives designers to borrow successful concepts from the bold minority.

Fingers crossed that they give all the experts the finger and release a "hardcore console" :D! Everyone keeps saying power doesn't matter, it's all about winning the living room with a broad entertainment box, blablabla. I hope Sony shuts them up ;).

This need you keep touting is not true and the extended generation is proof of the lack of need. Developers take a safe/extremely boring approach because of cost and not because they are working on older hardware. The newer hardware is a supped up netbook with a midrange graphics card. So in a nutshell we would have better looking games. Thats about it. Is that your innovation? Is that the great need you speak of? Is this improvement in graphics going to stimulate devs into taking risks instead of playing it safe? Hell no.

I do not mean to be a spoiled sport, but I am more concerned if this next-gen Playstation will even allow us to play used games.

Doesn't sound like there will be hardware based B/C though there might be 'streaming' B/C.

Yeah, I remembered reading about that, actually. Interesting because Onlive came to mind when I first heard about it. But, as for my comment, I was referring to the next gen Playstation, let's say PS4, not being able to play used PS4 games. I am actually really concerned about that.
