i know this is kind of a stupid idea, but if companies like microsoft or sony posted the names, addresses, phone numbers, ect of every hacker they could find would you support that? i know i would. seriously, stopping a hacker is almost impossible, with things like flashed consoles that remove bans they don't even have to buy new systems to continue their hacking spree. however, if hundreds of people called them, threatening them or possibly even going to their house and beating them up, would you really want to hack an account?

EDIT:if you couldn't get sued over it

That just crosses rights to privacy, and long long lawsuit that no company can afford. I dont think you can imagine the PR damage it will bring, etc.

Microsoft can't. If somebody formed some sort of "anti-hacker support group" or something I guess they could if they really wanted...It would still probably be an invasion of privacy, but some companies sell people's info to telemarketers so it can't always be "bad" to have your info out there.

Not really a good idea if your talking about real life info definitely not. Possibly Gamertags or PSN so the community would be aware of it but no more than that. Also it really is an invasion of privacy and the companies would take lots of heat. Plus it is a terrible idea to have people getting beaten up.

Also consider you don't know who is really doing the hacking more than one person may have access to a single gamertag or PSN.

Because the question is in relation to hackers in the gaming community as well as in the larger spectrum of the information age.

MS can't do it, but gamers can. The fellow who hacked Major Nelson's gamertag had his personal docs discovered and posted all over the place. Of course, he was arrested, so it's unlikely mobs of nerds will go beat him up. Though it does delight me to think what kind of company the poor little dork is keeping now. Major reality check.

I wouldn't support that. I can only see public defamation of that nature having a negative outcome. What would be the point of such a venture other than to be a deterrent from getting caught?

Remember the story recently about that guy who got stabbed in the head for cheating at Counter Strike? There are stupid people out there who would use that information and do something stupid. Obviously that's an extreme case but the point is still valid.

If MS catch and know a hacker they should prosecute them according to the local laws. In some states it can be as high as 20 yeasr jail time and $250,000. Let's not forget that hacking accounts also provides access to financial data for those of you who store your credit card details there.

Ha! I just had the concept of posting up hackers like they do with registered sex offenders under Megan's Law. It's brilliant really!

As much as I would like that, it is pretty wrong. ruining someone's life just because they are ruining a game? Seems a bit much.

No, I would fight that because believe it or not, animosity over the internet is a good thing. A lot of people suck at knowing when to draw the line and taking a step back to realise that it's just a game, just a hobby and there are other, more important things in life. Yea, hackers are losers, but in the end they have no integrity and it shows how pathetic they are that they need to cheat just to feel good about themselves. They're always the smaller person in the end.

I get the "eye for an eye" idea, but I doubt any corporation would take risks like that. They could be sued, at the least.

Turn it around then. Get the corporation to sue the hackers.

It's something that everyone would want to see but it will unfortunately never happen. The laws on privacy are so tight that the only ever winner when it comes to hacking is the criminal themselves. Hell, the majority of the big software companies even want to hire them afterwoulds. I suggest a "Specific Hacker Hit Team" be created, no ones who they are so one knows when they're gone :)

Yeah I am sure everyone does something wrong in their life, and would you want to get your personal info hang on a wall so everyone can see just for one or two wrong-doings? Theres plenty of way to do this and this isnt it. You notice the part Personal! I dont like this because you know what if your friend hacked your console without your consent, wallah, innocent people can yeah... keep imagining but this is a bad idea imo.

I'm all for it. I'm sick to death of people romanticizing hackers. TO me they have never been, and will never be, cool.

Hacking is hardly in the same category as a sex offence. What's next, we have to announce if we are a petty theif or get a parking fine? :D

I don't mean to sound callous at all toward anyone who has been a victim of rape, but if you think about it, hacking can be nearly as bad. Depending upon what has been hacked, it can ruin people's lives completely. Hackers can cause people to lose their vehicles, houses, and so forth. A very personal violation.

We're talking about gaming account hacking here though not mass fraud. The worst they can do is a little bit of defamation or buy some stuff on your credit card. And we all should have sensible limits for daily spends on our credit cards to prevent this.

I didn't know you could have daily limits on credit cards.... Valid point, though.

Sure! I'd be more than happy to test it for you, lol. I know my cards have a credit limit, but I don't know about any daily one, or even monthly.

What I was about to say. If the companies knew who the hacker was then they'd take care of it themselves and not need what you just suggested
