With all this hype and exceptionally positive reviews for the shooter/rpg I am inclined to buy it on PC for christmas but I haven't played the first two and to be honest i can't be bothered. Should I still play it??

Of course, the plot is not related to the previous ones and besides it's completely different game than the first two.

I don't think many people who are buying it have played the others.

Absolutely. My experience with the previous Fallouts was limited to some brief time with the PC demos, but that hasn't affected my ability to enjoy the hell out of some Fallout 3. And while the story is separate, it's still a fairly rich world which you might want to investigate a bit (i.e. here). Other than that though, get out there and lose yourself in some postapocalyptic hotness.

I think the only reason someone shouldn't play Fallout 3 is if they talked bad about it and are so afraid to hurt their ego and find out it's one of the best games of this year.

There apparently are a bunch of little things that players of the first two will notice but it's a completely separate game.

I have played the first two and I'm working my way through 3 now. From what I've played so far (maybe 5 hours) you don't need to have played the first two to enjoy/understand the game.

The game's intended audience are people who haven't played the first two, so you should be fine.
