I got both for the first time today, and I was curious which I should play first.

I heard X was the best so I'm thinking of playing it second so I won't be disappointed with XII.

What do yall think? Thanks!

---EDIT---

I've decided to play FFXII first... I'm about 10 hours in and am enjoying it thoroughly. I love the combat system, keeps the game much more fluid.

Thanks for all the help!

They ain't related to each other, so it makes no real difference but yes FFX is way better, still FFXII is a good game. I would start with XII if I were you.

If you prefer the traditional JRPG stylings you will want to go with X first and then kind of wade in to XII. I like them both, but XII definitely changed it up.

It doesn't matter.... just know that FFX is a JRPG with your typical turned based JRPG gameplay, while FFXII plays a lot like a WRPG with MMO gameplay. Two games are pretty much, complete opposites of each other.... And they both pretty much seesaw each other, in that those that say FF12 is the best, tend to voice their dislike of FFX the most, and vice-versa.

This, I loved X and so I would probably play that first. I have just started XII last night and im strill trying to get into it. Chances are, you will probably like one a lot more than the other because they are so different in terms of gameplay.

You could play 10 first and not disappoint with 12 since they are quite different, FF12 gameplay is different from any other FF

play x because you'd think the rest of the series is pretty crappy if you played xii, that is if haven't played the earlier installments.

That's because it's awful. save yourself the pain and dissapointment and just give it to a little brother or friend who'll nodoubt love it. the problem with XII is that it's distictly a Japanese game with a desire to be western. and because, according to japanese facts and figures, all us westerners do is play MMO's, they decided to make a game that ISN'T an MMO play like an MMO. which is stupid. Really, someone shoulda said to the lead designer... you're wrong man... just wrong.

that way of thinking is why RE5 wasn't as good as RE4. because they tried to appeal to a MOREwestern audience. I.E. BIG guy kills lot's of things. They shoulda just tried to appeal to RE fans instead. (mercinaries mode is genius as ever though)

you know what i mean... ? lol

X is by far the better game.

i don't mean to sound overly negative about 12... really, it just isn't the game i was expecting. so, prehaps it isn't that bad. but i can't get on with it. no matter how pretty it is. you'll feel involved with X, likewatchingRaiders of the lost Ark ,with XII, you'll feel like something isn't right, likewatching Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

Thats how I felt, though I played X first and it became one of my favorite game experiences ever. I laughed. I cried. My first playthrough was over 100 hours, and I wanted more so much that I tried to sit through X-2 even....

Then I tried twelve, and the "attemp at being a MMO" as someone else said turned me off. 10 hours in, I quit and never looked back.

X is definitely a lot better than XII. I played all the way through XII, but at the end it just felt like something was missing. X has more story and is far more interesting. XII isn't bad, it just doesn't have the "heart" that other FF games do.

XII is also combat and walking. The characters have no depth, and the story isn't really there. Like others said, play it first and any other FF will seem godly.

It doesn't matter, both are good. X has a better storyline, but it hasn't aged well because of it's ridiculous design choices. Or so it seems to me. XII's story isn't up to Final Fantasy standards, but its better than most JRPGs.

Honestly, if you have the time, play both and decided rather you like one or the other, or if you like both or hate both. Can't really have people make opinions for you. Just follow what you like and try both of them out.

I have to say that I am not surprised at all the hate people are expressing toward XII. People that are heavy FF fans are a funny bunch and they seem to believe that they should be consulted about design and story decisions, also, very resistant to change. The fact is that XII was made the way that it was because the project leads that Square hired felt like it was time to shake it up and Square agreed. It is still a good game and well worth your time if you can accept the fact that Square creates the series and not whiny fanboys.

Like the others Id play XII first, but not cause "you'll be let down by XII if you play X first". Final Fantasy XII is a better game than X. It just doesn't have some stupid love story like X. Also the main character sucks but once you forget about him and concentrate on the actual plot (the one with Ashe and Basch as the main characters) its got a cool story. Really the only problem with XII is the main character, its like seeing the story of a game through a different person's perspective instead of the protagonists perspective, if that makes sense. Besides that though XII is superior to X in every way: better sound, better graphics, better story, and better gameplay.

The only thing that 12 has over 10 is better graphics. 10's story is miles over 12's non-existent one.

IYO. in mine X's story was only halfway decent, and XII's was far superior and refreshing after the past 10 titles.

X has a much deeper story and has a turned based system. XII has a more action bases system, but the story and character development lacks horribly (in comparison to other FF games). I would go with X first, that way X doesn't seem to drag when you get into random battles after beating XII which doesn't have random battles.

It boils down to this: If you like traditional JRPG gameplay, get FFX. If you like the combat system seen in games like Baulder's Gate or World of Warcraft, get FFXII.

My biggest gripe with FFXII was how utterly dry the story and characters were. Everyone went around talking as if they were in a Victorian play, they dressed like Victorians, and the story was also painfully Victorian. Overall just a very, very boring setting and premise. FFX, on the other hand, had vibrant and memorable characters, the settings were very surreal, and the story was pretty interesting as well as much more entertaining. FFX also has what is widely considered to be the best original soundtrack ever featured in a game.

To highlight just how different these games are in terms of story: FFXII starts out with a parade, a marriage, and castle siege. FFX starts out with a giant monster laying waste to an entire city. No one really ever talks about the ending of FFXII. In contrast, anytime a topic asks "what's the best ending in a game?" or "what's the saddest ending you've seen in a game?" FFX always comes up at least once.

Personally I'd recommend FFX. But your tastes may differ.

Whatever you do, for the love of God, play FFX first! Once you play FFXII and experience the new battle system then you won't want to go back to the traditional system. I think FFXII was better because of it.

Considering how long that dungeon was, I understand why people would give up.
