Should I? I bought my Saturn over 6 months ago, and haven't really played it very much, I finished Sonic Jam and beat the special stage of Sega Rally with the Stratos (man, that was hard!) I haven't really got into Panzer dragoon, VF2 and Daytona CCE, so I'm considering selling my Saturn collection which includes: Sell: Sega Saturn Model 2 (unboxed) 2 controllers (1 official, 1 3rd party) All cables -Sega Rally -Sonic Jam -Daytona CCE -Steep Slope Sliders -Virtua Fighter 2 -Panzer Dragoon Buy: Dreamcast with controller 2 mouse/keyboard sets -Unreal Tournament -Quake 3 Arena -Jet Set Radio How much do you think I'm likely to get for my Saturn stuff? I'm thinking of student house FPS multiplayer next year! :P

for that....about £50 , the console itself would be worth 20-30 on its own (at most) , but apart from PDZ , all of those games can be bought for well under £10 , so 50 is about what I would pay for it (maybe a bit more if everything was in absolute top condition)

I'd say if you have anymore DC games in mind then yes, just those 3 seem a bit too little to trade in your Saturn for, since two of them can be found on the PC.

well , to be fair , you can also find VF2 and Panzer Dragoon on the PC as well. if he feels he doesn't like the system , its his choice, at least he tried it . Although I would agree those are not the games to get a DC for (would be like getting a Saturn for Quake , good game on the system, but not worth it on its own)

Ah, but my only computer is a MacBook :P Besides, split screen on our TV would be more convenient. Some other games I had in mind were Sonic adventure, Hydro thunder, sega rally 2 and crazy taxi. Does Phantasy Star online have a (good) single player mode? In fact, does anybody have any dreamcast recommendations?

Oh, it's not that I don't like the system, I LOVE the controller, and had a real blast playing Sega Rally and the old Sonic games, it's just that it's been lying round gathering dust and I only got it recently so there's no nostalgia value tied up with it.

well, if you need any DC recommendations, I would say just have a look at my DC games in my games list, you might find something there, rather than me listing all those games here over and over again. although the DC is in some ways similar to the Saturn , although its not really a "Saturn with better visuals" either.

I think the Saturn is a lot better system then the DC, but if you want to get one then just do it.

From what I recall, PSO does have a good (or at least decent) single player story. Other reccomendations would be: Dead or Alive Sonic Adventure Sonic Adventure 2 Skies of Arcadia Jet Set Radio as you mentioned yourself Shenmue (I personally never played it, but it's highly praised) Soul Reaver looks better on the DC version Power Stone series (One Piece Grand Adventure's battle system is based on this, really fun party-styIe fighting game)

I think you mean DOA2, DOA was a Saturn/PS1 game

something else to note is that if hes planning to get a VGA cable for his Dreamcast, he won't be able to play Skies of Arcadia PAL , its one of those games that won't run on it no matter what.

No, you should keep your saturn and save up to buy a Dreamcast. The Saturn is too good a system to sell and if you do you will just end up regreting it later and probably rebuying it down the road.

I would not sell a Saturn to get a Dreamcast. I would find another means of making money and buy a Dreamcast, and hold onto my Saturn.

I seriously regret selling all my childhood video games. I must have traded in 500 games, an NES, SNES, Genesis, N64, PS1, Saturn, Dreamcast, 3 PS2s, 4 Xboxs, 2 Gamecubes, and a ton of other stuff. Looking back, I wish I still had all that, and now I find myself rebuying a lot of the stuff which sucks. I don't trade or sell anything anymore, not even the worst games in the world that I know for a fact I'll never play again, just cause I'm so pissed at myself for trading and selling my other stuff. I have a no sell/trade policy, no exceptions.

This. I feel you, I have probably traded or sold 3 times the amount of games I currently own since I was a kid, and most of it I have rebought over the years.

Aye. Problem is I also have a PS Vita, Wipeout 2048 and SSX on my 'to buy list'. :P As I said before, I don't have that nostalgia associated with the Saturn. The first time I'd ever ever seen a Saturn in real life was when I bought mine 6 months ago. I intended to aquire an ST key or action replay so I could start importing Japanese Saturn games, but I don't think that's ever gonna happen now - that would end up being expensive business, and I'd rather direct my gaming budget elsewhere. I've been wanting to play JSR for a while now, JSRF on the Xbox is one of my all time favorites. The two shooters I mentioned look like they'd be an absolute blast to play in splitscreen, and DC keyboards and mice are so inexpensive, that it looks to be a nicer way of doing it than playing over LAN, but I dunno. That said, I can't help feeling that I'm undervaluing the Saturn. After all, I chose it above the Dreamcast and Mega Drive when I was looking to buy my very first Sega thang!

Nostalgia aside, the Saturn is a great system, however you are right about it being expensive, import or domestic. However, if you're thinking about saving money with the Dreamcast, good luck. Some of the better titles such as Marvel vs. Capcom 2, Power Stone, Project Justice, Sonic Adventure 2, and Last Blade 2 are pretty expensive for retro titles as well. Of course, there are cheap titles like Crazy Taxi, Sonic Adventure, and Soul Caliber, but the same could be said for the Saturn as well. But it's your money and your systems so if you'd like you can trade your Saturn in for a Saturn, but beware, myself and many others on here have sold great systems like the Saturn and regretted it down the road.

not true, most Saturn games are fairly affordable, unless the only games you go for are the likes of Panzer Saga and some of the rarer shmups.

people like to focus on the 10% of games which are expensive, rather then the 90% which are not expensive (and those include alot of quality games)

although the DC is cheaper overall, though it has its expensive games too.

If you're REALLY feeling torn over ditching the Saturn, don't do it. Dreamcasts are cheap and the only way to enjoy a Saturn game is via the console, as emulation is still in its infancy. I don't have that many games to play on Saturn seeing as I practically spent 2.5 years of my childhood on it. But I recalled having never played Clockwork Knight's sequel and I suddenly got the urge to do just that. The first one ended with a cliffhanger and all. My console is around but the laser is dead. Tried to emulate it and the software kept crashing.

Regarding your PSP-Vita potential buy, I'd say hold it off. I was gonna get a 3DS once KH3D or Layton VS Wright was released while prior buying Tales of Abyss and Resident Evil Revelations just in case the games are nowhere to be found once I actually bought the handheld. However, I caved in last week and thought what the heck, bought the handheld along with its version of Sonic Generations, and I'm here to report that the handheld is still in its box while the game's still wrapped in its plastic. This is mostly due to me not having time nor motivation to play the handheld but that's besides the point. I haven't unboxed it but it's collecting dust all the same. Once I get my hands on Resident Evil however...

I think my point comes across.

I think it depends of your definition of cheap; in my opinion cheap for a retro game is less than $10, and while games like Virtua fighter, Virtua Fighter 2, Nights, and a few other great titles on the Saturn fall within this cheap range, most other games that fall within this range are games either not worth playing or sports games that were great in their time, but not so much now. I used to own a NTSC Saturn many years ago and I remember buying games for that system bled me dry, and I never owned anything really valuable like Gardian Heros, House of the Dead, Panzer Dragoon Saga, or anything within that $60+ price range. For the quality titles, I was consistently paying $20+ for about 75% of the games I was purchasing, and that was looking for the best deals possible on Ebay and in local game stores. Now, it seems to be even worse than it was when I was buying these games back in 2004/2005.

under 10$ is pretty unrealistic in terms of expections, for most consoles, honestly, apart from something like the US NES, I can't think of any game consoles where you can expect most games to cost under 10 dollars.

Im talking more in the £10ish , for me thats not expensive.

Well, apart from loads of great PS1, quite a few 3rd party N64, Dreamcast, PS2, Xbox and Gamecube games that can be picked up for only a few pounds! - I haven't bought a game that's over 20 pounds for years, even for current gen consoles. Call me a cheapskate! :P Most of the cheap Saturn games it seems are multiplatform, so are available on the PS1 and the N64 as well. It's the good Saturn exclusives that are pricey. I've fancied Saturn Bomberman for a while, but that's expensive. I'm the kind of person that only buys inexpensive games, especially when it comes to legacy platforms. I'm going to make an exception for SSX, just because it looks that good. M3tr4nk0 - Well, for NiGHTS and a Saturn 3d controller that you need to play it with, you'd be looking at quite a bit of cash, last time I saw a 3D controller for sale, the shop wanted 30 pounds for that alone! Panzer Zwei... meh. I've got the first one and Orta and haven't felt any motivation to persevere with either. From what I've seen of NiGHTS (granted I haven't actually played it myself), I'm not that fussed about that either. edit reasons: GAH why doesn't Gamespot upgrade it's bl**dy archaic forum software!!! Stop closing up my paragraphs! And why can't I write a stupid pound sign!!!??

Im guessing youre not a fan of looking for bids and deals on Ebay? :P seriously, Ive found quite a few games over the years for low prices that way , and while it is true that Saturn games are more expensive than before, Ive noticed it happening to alot of other consoles.

Not reeaaly, I don't actually have a paypal account, because I know I just spend ALL my cash on it! I use Amazon marketplace a bit though, there are often some decent deals there. I tend to pick up games as and when I see them in shops. Sadly Gamestation Nottingham closed it's awesome upstairs Retro section over Christmas, so my PS1/saturn game source has dried up! :P Playtime in Nottingham is fairly good, and they quite often have old consoles in, but most of their selection is current and 6th gen.

then I think we have found the cause , Ive said it before, and Ill say it again , the best way to get Saturn games , is online, its harder to find Saturn games for a decent price. actually probably 9/10 games I buy , I buy online, saved a hell of alot of money.

Agreed about buying online, I get games a lot cheaper that way more often than not. Anyway though OP there are a lot more quality games on the Saturn imo but if none interest you and you want a Dreamcast than go for it. Jet Set Radio is awesome btw, one of the reasons I want a Dreamcast is to play it again.

not true, most Saturn games are fairly affordable, unless the only games you go for are the likes of Panzer Saga and some of the rarer shmups.

people like to focus on the 10% of games which are expensive, rather then the 90% which are not expensive (and those include alot of quality games)

although the DC is cheaper overall, though it has its expensive games too.

I guess I'm just really cheap because I manage to find most of my games valuable or not for less than $10. However, Saturn games are something I rarely come across in the places I get my deals on games, so if you're looking to build your saturn collection, yo can either be very patient and persistent and try and find them at thrift stores and garage sales, or you can do the Ebay/Amazon thing which gets very expensive in terms of Saturn games. I've found the same for Dreamcast and Turbo-Graphix games as well.

You pretty much mentioned all the games that ever sell below $10 on Ebay for the Saturn, with the exception of the many outdated sports games. Compare that with the hundreds of other games on the Saturn that go for $15+, you're spending a lot of dough on games. I know because I used to buy tons of domestic Saturn games on Ebay, and aside from the games you mentioned everything else I bought was typically $20+; Panzer Dragoon Zwei, Shinobi Legions, Contra, Clockwork Knights, Sega Ages, Burning Rangers, Area 51, and I could go on and on. The Saturn is not a cheap system to collect for, at least going through Ebay, Amazon, or game stores, unless your definition of cheap is $20 to $40.

Saturn is definitely quite pricey compared to other older consoles. The majority of its better games are 20+$, with a big chunk costing quite a bit more then that.

20$ is also cheap yes. 60$ is expensive as it's the cost of a new game

Why not just save up and keep your Saturn?
