I've just published a post on my blog about whether more games should include fixed save points and was interested to see if other people shared my view.

I think that games like Dark Souls and Alien Isolation use the idea of fixed save points really well, to limit what the player can do (by them losing progress by not being able to save all the time), and to also create a further sense of tension/urgency to find the next place to save.

Pretty much all games have auto-save features, or let you manually save wherever you are, and what I though could be interesting is the inclusion of optional fixed save points. I reckon this could vary up games a fair bit, and also give titles much more replayability on what is essentially a higher difficulty level.

So do you think that more games should have this as a feature, optional or not?

Here is a link to my post about it: http://www.blogstrum.com/2018/01/fixed-save-points.html (I'm not sure if this is spamming or not, this is my first post here so not 100% on the rules)

There arent enough games that let you save where you want. I love Skyrim and Dishonoured and co for allowing you to do that,

@soul_starter: Yeah I especially loved being able to quick-save wherever I was in Dishonoured 2 so I could try out tricks to kill or evade guards etc.

I think fixed save points only work as part of the gameplay. Resident Evil, for example, made it pretty well. You had to use a specific item in a specific room to save. There, saving was part of the experience. Another, totally different example would be JRPGs that define points where you can save so you will always have an option to continue. Being able to save between two hard bosses with one character barely alive and the rest dead would kill your entire progress.

Overall though I think being able to save when and how I want to is better. Even in the JRPG example you could add quick saves that still keep your ordinary saves. Games like Sonic Mania suffer from there not being enough save spots. While I had no Problem running through it, I heard of people who weren't familiar with Sonic that had some parts being too hard for them and they had to run through 5 minutes again just to get back to this one point that caused them trouble. I don't see who wins. The ones who are good don't need it anyway and the ones who aren't suffer for nothing.

@blogstrum: Fixed saves is usually for games built around a particular level of planning. If you could save a game like Resident Evil whenever, the impact of your actions and items used has less weight.

And while games like The Evil Within and in other modern Survival Horror games have autosaves, you as well have modes like Madhouse and Classic that are built around doing the concept of fixed and limited saves right.

So in general I feel it heavily suits Survival Horror games, it adds towards the tension if handled correctly.

@blogstrum: Yep, without the quicksave feature, the experimentation would not have been possible, or as interesting.

The save gameplay in Alien Isolation have been interesting to me. It was fun.

But I prefer that most games are checkpoint and old school save.

I don't mind that some games have "fixed" save. And I would possibly play them.

autosaves are critical for those of us that get engrossed in games and forget to save after 30+ minutes of work :P

but I really prefer a manual save option as well; if I had to choose, I'd choose that over autosave. There is something awesome about quicksaving the game before you think an epic battle is going to happen, the epic battle comes, and you're like "Hmmm let's do that again" and hit F9 to load it up :D
