I just seen the Movie Avartar and i did some reseach on James Cameron (the maker of Avatar) and found out he plays WoW. That being said, I couldn't for the life of me stop thinking of all the World of Warcrafts similarities, despite me not playing for yrs. I mean, c'mon. You start with an Avatar (your Lv1 Night Elf), visit the capital with the huge Tree, level up by hunting and get your first riding mount. Train some more you get your flying mount at the flying mountains (which isn't anything new, of course). And then you get your epic flying mount which makes you the talk of the town, only to mount a defense against a raid by the opposing faction. Im just saying for those that played WoW before, im sure you seen these same similarities.

Pandora seemed like a straight cross between Zangarmarsh and Nagard (flying mountains)

tbh, the whole movie seemed like a cross between Halo and WoW

the maker of Avartar plays a night elf hunter. I mean i was siting with my wife and i was like this movie reminds me of WoW (the night elf area).. LoL. Then come to find out james camern plays wow. I just started laughing. Even those little tree spirits in the movie are alot like the wasp in the night elf area. That was a great movie.

Lol I find this pretty funny, I used to play WoW and consider playing it again all the time. Now that you mention all of those things it does kind of make sense.

This thread really makes my head hurt. You're basically saying that a movie that's been in development since 1994 is ripping off WoW left right and center. Right. Btw, I had no idea that "flying mounts" belonged to Wow. Same goes for elves, hunting, large trees, and raids. Give me a break. If anything, they're derivative fantasy elements shared by a crapton of people, especially since Tolkien. Give me a break.

@ paladin king

Hey genius, i never said avatar is ripping off WoW, I only said there's alot of similarities. people also said the story (Avatar)is similar to the pocahontas storyline as well. It doesnt mean that its a rip-off, itJust means they have a similar storyline nothing more, nothing less. If your confusing the word similarities with the word rip-off then your a idiot, they're two different thing. Its true, I wouldn't lie to you.

Wow. Bold font. Menacing. The meaning doesn't change insofar as your original post implies that Cameron, as a WoW gamer, allowed a WoW influence to carry over into his work. Otherwise, why bring that up? I'm saying that that influence is not only unlikely, but bordering on impossible. That's not only because of the ludicrously broad and widely used nature of the examples you point out, but also because of the time in which Cameron actually wrote the script. Also, I'm no grammar nazi, but saying "your a idiot" is probably not the best way to call someone stupid.

While World of Warcraft has very likely influenced Cameron, I doubt he has copied the whole world from WoW to a movie that he first idealized 15 years ago. But haha, I think I know now why Cameron took such a long break from directing :P

It wouldn't surprise me.

Avatar is one of the most cliché'-ridden narratives in recent memory, full of contrivances and derivative to its very core. Cameron borrowed heavily to make the film so any similarities would be consistent with the overall look and feel of the film.
