Maybe it is the simplicity. It has FF 4. I tried the original Breath of fire. What a gem.

I feel like it's a tie between the SNES and PS1, at least in terms of JRPGs; I feel like the golden age of JRPGs was from 1993 until 2001. Since then, I feel like JRPGs have been more miss than hit, but that's not to say there are bad ones. lol but I totally digress :p
Do you mean like no voice acting or those RPG's that are almost completely text based?Am I the only one that prefers text to spoken dialog for RPGs?

I think PSX had the stronger RPG library, it also had a bunch of the SNES RPG library ported to it.
PSX had Grandia, Star Ocean Second Story, Wild Arms, Valkyrie Profile, Lunar 1 and 2, FF IV-IX, Vagrant Story, Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, Alunda, and so many more great titles.

No voice acting. With text it leaves more for the player to imagine.
Some of the most memorable RPGs I've ever played were on SNES. A LOT of the JRPG elements that are now overused and cliche, were introduced and innovative on the SNES. So that has to say something for it. But I'd be willing to bet that more than a few people would still say PS1 was the better RPG machine. And I'd have to agree, simply due to these few games: Legend of Legaia, King's Field 1 & 2, Diablo, and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night; all of which are personal all-time favorites.

No, you're not the only one. Like you said, it leaves more to the imagination.
On topic: It's a tie between the SNES and PS1 for me, too many great RPGs on both to choose one over the other.

Yeah I get you, in most cases I do agree, but in some games I found the voice acting to be excelent, like in Dragon Quest VIII. But in most cases, I do agree. The SNES era was quite a golden era for me personally @ least. Sadly I missed out on the PS1 era of games since from '96 to 2002 I had little interest in video games except for on my pc.
I haven't kept up but from what I have read there are quite a ton of RPG's for PS1/PS2. One day I'd love to play them.
Fun fact: you change "RPGs" in the title to anything and it would still be true.istuffedsunny
FPS? No.
RTS? No.
There are probably more but the fact is your "fun fact" is wrong.
Don't get me wrong, the SNES is one of the best consoles ever made and has some of the best games ever made. But it hasn't got the best games of every genre.
I've played and beaten Earthbound, all the SNES Final Fantasies, Chrono Trigger, Lufia 2, and am right now currently trying to beat Super Mario RPG. I attest this fact as completely and utterly true. No system before or after has better RPGs, and I don't even like JRPGs anymore.
there's quite a few that arent big name ones too!I've played and beaten Earthbound, all the SNES Final Fantasies, Chrono Trigger, Lufia 2, and am right now currently trying to beat Super Mario RPG. Yeah. It just sucks I never played them back when I cared for the genre. The only reason I'm trying to beat SMRPG is because I'm a big Mario guy.
I like voice acting. I just feel like it holds my attention more. And I liked ps1/ps2 library alotAm I the only one that prefers text to spoken dialog for RPGs?

The SNES does have a very impressive line-up of RPGs, but I think the PS1 should be ranked up there as well because it would certainly give my favorite system (SNES) a run for its money lol:P
SNES definitely has the most RPGs that I haven't played and want to. That is partly becasue I've never owned one and partly because there are just so many awesome ones. I think I am going to wind up playing a lot of them as the remakes available on other systems though.

I prefer this as well.snes had some pretty awesome rpgs, chrono trigger, a couple final fantasies etc etc, but I'm pretty sure tons of others have to agree with me that ps1 was the top notch console for rpg's, even the not so good rpg's were enjoyable (legend of legaia) but what made the ps1 rpg market stand out the most was the innovation. Ok the snes had great rpg's but most of them stuck to the same script graphics wise and gameplay wise, ps1 had tons of new battle systems to pick from the combo style from legends of legaia, in legend of dragoon you had to time the button press precicely to execute a combo, parasite eve's action based battle system, and theres also vagrant story, alundra. What made the ps1 era of rpg's unique was that it offered several flavors for people with different tastes.
They were overused on the SNES not many things were actually introduced, remember Jrpgs were not that popular till the gen after the SNES. On TC's note, no, it's not.
