I picked up a SNES package today at a local thrift store. The package had the console with all hookups, 4 controllers, and 6 games for 20 bucks. I don't know if that is a good deal or not, but I don't care because of the waves upon waves of intense happiness I recieved from the memories of games such as donkey kong country, super mario land, etc.

When I got it home, however, my memories of happiness were shattered when I couldn't get the console to work. The console powers on without a problem and the red light shows. Whenever I turn it on though the screen just stays black and I get no audio or video on all but 1 game. Donkey Kong Country plays for about 3 seconds with screwed up audio and then freezes. I think it is the console itself because I doubt that 6 cartridge games are broken.

Does anybody have any idea what is wrong or how to fix it?

Did you try cleaning the games contacts? If not the contacts could just be dirty clean them with q-tips dabbed in rubbing alcohol.

Yeah, just do this. I sometimes have problems running my SNES games as well but a quick clean-up usually does the trick

Yes, I did try this on both games that did not work originally and the Donkey Kong Country....same results. Nothing works after a good cleaning.

I've never heard of an SNES quitting.. .Since there are no moving parts, those things last forever. The only thing I can think of is something got burned out on the mother board. Or, you simply have bad connectors that are beyond cleaning.

Check out the connector is it corroded or are there any pins bent or out of place. You can also try cleaning the connector itself by rigging up something like a credit card with a thin piece of cloth over it dabbed in rubbing alcohol and clean it by pulling it in and out not side to side as that could bend the pins. If that doesn't do it than it's something on the board that went bad. Also check and make sure the power supply is official I heard of alot of people having issues with third party adaptors for the snes that can cause alot of weird issues

Sounds like the mother board just kicked the bucket. I have this happen to mine a week ago. It was working perfectly all this time and even the previous day I was playing it. It would start up but I'd get a black screen. I tried everything but the mother board just decided to call it quits. That really sucks your not able to play your snes game. Don't worry snes systems are really easy to find and not very expensive to get. Happy gaming once you get a new system :)

If you can find a Nintendo screwdriver Version 1 for the cartridge based systems. there is a version 2 or the Nintendo screwdriver. The 6 games alone are worth $20.00 so buying gamesystems at thift store is "hit or miss" Your better of just buying a working SNES from a used videogame store.

Sage advice there, but you forgot to tell the TC that he needs to turn on his console after plugging the game

I had two do this. One I owned since the 90s and wasn't abused. I cleaned them both w contact cleaner. Ultimately I just jossiled the carts in the systems and they started to work...
