So, are we now officially seeing too many 10 scores?

not just on gamespot, but on most sites i notice there seems tobe a rash of reviewers very eager to assign a 10/10.

has it lost its meaning? i awlays thought the elusive perfect 10 was something that only got pulled out once every 5-7 years.

For what it's worth, there have been a lot of really good games coming out lately.

gamespot has only given out 4 tens in it's history, but if you really mean unofficially, as in just the player reviews, thena lot of people are giving out 10's to their favourite games, and its their opinion on their reviews so it's perfectly ok. But yeah if you were talking about Gamespot's actual reviews than you would be wrong because they have only given out 4 since the site began.

A lot of very good games. But also remember that not all "publications" treat 10 the way gamespot does. Game Informer and Play, for example, have always been pretty quick to pull the 10 trigger.

i think:

zelda ocarina of time

tony hawks 3

fainal fantasy VII?

and... erm....

i can't remember the 4th

edit: just checked and instead of ff vii it's chrono cross and the final one is soul calibur.

and to reply to the tc's question i dont think the 10/10 score it being thrown around. most reputable games sites / magazines only deal out a perfect score onces in a blue moon. the kind of publications that deal out 5/5 etc are lifestyle magazines and newspapers who don't really know what they're talking about.

i don't think 4 10's in gamespots long history is over the top

You know... people get hung up on 10 = perfect. NO GAME is perfect.

10 merely indicates a stellar game that pretty much within reason has as much as you could ask for, some magazines foolishly label 10 as perfect, instead of "masterpiece" or something less absolute..

And I think LordAndrew said it earlier... there are a LOT of good games coming out now.

It seems more like the definition of the 10 out 10 score is changing. No game is truly perfect. Even though a 10/10 score may look like it's perfect on paper, it seems more like sites are using it to convey that a game is ridiculously good.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Chrono Cross, Soul Calibur, and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3. Four games for four different platforms, each a year apart.

I'm glad to see the entire scale being used, that's what the numbers are there for. Personally, I grew tired of the 10 mark having this whole mystical thing surrounding it. Film and music critics use the highest mark all the time, what's so different about games? The problem is in the gamers themselves who, unlike film and music fans, give far too much importance to scores.

No. A reviewer should give what he feels. I mean the fact that there are many 10's doesn't mean anything bad. You don't see a teacher say "too many students are getting an A+"

No I don't think so. Like someone else mentioned there are just alot of great games coming out. I'd say that this year is one of the best years we've had for gaming. I also agree with what UpInFlames mentioned as well in that it's nice to see games get these kind of scores instead of keeping 10 as some sort of mystical unattainable number.
