There once was a time when gamestop hired people who were actually knowledgeable about video games. I go in there, and there were 2 people running the store, one looked like Justin Bieber on steroids and the other looked like Audrina Patridge. I asked the guy if he knew when the new Deus Ex was coming out; he didn't even know what Deus Ex was, the gal working there had never heard of it either, and asked me how to spell it when he looked it up on the computer. W T F? I thought it was gamestop, not abercrombie.

No, but the Deus Ex series is a game that any gamer would have at least know of, even if he or she hasn't played it. I mean neither person "looked" like your typical gamer, and I know people say you can't always judge a book by the cover, but the fact that he had never even heard of a popular gaming series and didn't even know how to spell it just confirmed my suspicion.

Do you realize how many games there are coming out? And you expect them to know any of them? It doesn't come out for almost a year; why would you expect them to know about a game that far away, especially when it could be pushed back? Why couldn't you have just looked it up? Since, you know, you're posting on an video game forum?

Why would you assume that?

If it's something they're not interested in, they probably wouldn't know. I hadn't heard of the series until about a year ago... And even then it was only because an employee some where tried to push it on me. I had no idea there was another one coming out

It is really not so absurd, I also have not heard of this series until quite recently. Im a huge gamer but not even I know of every title in existence. Hey those two employees could have just been casual gamers for all you know.

I worked at gamestop about four years ago. The manager and I were the only ones that were even interested in games at all. The other employees were just random people that could have been working anywhere. I was sad.:(

yeah its hit or miss. I went to a gamestop that didnt know that MS was releasing a bigger HDD for the xbox360. But there's another store that I go to that has smarter employees. I just hope they dont get paid very much to stand there and do pretty much nothing. I am the kinda shopper that looks, finds what he wants, then leaves. I dont need advice on what game I should buy. I rarely even ask them when something is coming out. and for the 1000000th time, NO i dont want to pre-order any games. lol

i understand where OT is coming from. They're probably casuals who really needed a job. But they work for a video game store and the OT wont be the only customer asking for unfamiliar games. Ive asked before. They should know that stuff. But we're all human, so you cant be that mad at them. Lol

It would make more sense to hire a salesman over a gamer. Its best to hire sommeone who is both, but the priority goes to a salesman.

If you ask me, there's a benefit to hiring casuals or non gamers as employees at gamestop. It would cut back on all the fanboyism that happens there. I never really had a problem with it but there was a point where everyone on this board was posting about how those employed by GS were the biggest fanboys and would promoted one system while cutting down the other. If they were non gamers then they probably wouldnt even care to steer you toward a particular console.

Especially if you believe in the stereotype that gamers have no people skills... ;) Though an argument can be made that if you had gone in to the same store and asked about a game that will be coming out pretty soon, they'd hopefully know about it, at least if they're experienced at sales and good at that part of their job. *shrugs* My Gamestop hires gamers who are good salesmen, and who by now know me well enough to not try and push anything on me I'm not asking them about, so I don't really have any complaints about them. :)

I dont think you are understanding most of us. I like some others have never even heard of this Dues Ex or however you spell it and I like some others have been serious gamers for quite awhile. Just because one has not heard of a single game does not categorize them as not knowing much about gaming.

Plus do movie theaters hire movie experts, or does blockbuster? Same goes for any low paying job, when did they ever get labeled as having to hire someone who is an expert on what that company sells... Just saying.

Deus Ex is mostly a PC game, with the exceptions being the port of the first game to PS2, and the port of the sequel, Invisible War, to the Xbox. Neither one lighting the sales charts ablaze, to say the least. I think it's a given that the series would less well known on the whole.

I had never heard of Deus Ex until the teaser for DE3 was posted on here. For one thing, gamestop isnt really known for PC games and the employees can't possibly know all the games that have been made.

And what is a typical gamer supposed to look like? Fat and Nerdy? Is it so hard to believe that some gamers maybe..oh i dont know...attractive? Also I have been gaming for over 20 years and have never played that series and would have needed to look it up to.

I tend to stay away from Gamestop. They have an infuriating poor collection of PC games. Either the people who work there are fan boys or they know nothing about gaming at all. I'm not sure which is worse. In the old days of the PS2/Xbos era I used to own a PS2. The staff then was pretty cool. I'd go in for a game, we'd end up chatting and two hours later I'd come out with three new games. Then one day I walked in and most the staff had changed. They were all wearing xbox t shirts and talking about how the PS2 was crap. Every time I went in for a purchase they'd spend the whole time bothering me to buy an Xbox. That's when I started shopping online for games. Now whenever I go into Gamestop I see employees who know nothing about games. There is no interesting conversation, but again no one bothers me. Now when I want to get a game for my PS2 i travel like one hour away to this Gamestop where this really cool girl works. We talk about gaming for hours and I leave with a few gems for my collection. Anyway the moral of that story is that true gamers, not fanboys or just people who work behind a counter are what sells the games.

You've never played it, but you've at least heard of it, right? Not having heard of Deus Ex, at this point...it's like saying you've never heard of Quake or something. I mean, if you follow games at all, just....how? That's like some kind of crazy statistical anomaly, to follow gaming and have managed to avoid seeing any reference to Deus Ex.

gamestop tends not to care how knowledgable there employees are, I got into an argument with one over the phone once because he insisted that the banjo kazooie series was a Play station 2 exclusive series and that Nuts and bolts came out in 2004 (this was around 2 weeks before Nuts and Bolts was released :|)

Wait, I get it now. It's not being a "pathological liar" that is a requirement for employment, as I suggested above. It's actually just that they don't know what the hell they are talking about, and when I hear them tell customers things that are blatantly wrong it just SEEMS that way.

I just called my brother because of this thread. He's 31 years old, been gaming since he was 4, and he's never heard of Deus Ex. Its simply because it is a PC-centric franchise, and my brother is strictly a console gamer. I myself have never played a Deus Ex game, and I'm a 33 year old who is mostly a console gamer that has dabbled in PC gaming some. I've only recently become aware that such a franchise exists. What I'm getting at is that I'm not surprised in the least that a fair number of people don't know Deus Ex.

I always wanted to work for Gamestop, I still do but those employees are terrible, there was one guy who convinced me to pre-order MW2 because he said that it was going to be the "best game ever" and "everyone I know will be playing it" he basicly told me all the cool people play MW2. Another time I asked a guy if they had Gamecube games, I just wanted some used Gamecube games because the Wii doesn't have enough games that are worth playing (my Xbox 360 was broken at the time), the guy looked at me and said "They don't make Gamecube games anymore." As if people don't sell their old Gamecube games anymore, they had PS2 games, they had GBA games even, but not a single Gamecube game, so the guy takes me around to look at some Wii games, he says "The Conduit is a great FPS for the Wii.":| Yeah, for the Wii but it is just another Wii FPS, that hit me hard because it was like he never heard The Conduit completely floped, the Wii gamers hyped it like it would bring a new age to the Wii and it fails, now they are making a sequal. What gamers need is a real game store, not a little corner store with only some racks of games, I mean a substantial store so that they can supply the needs of all the different types of gamers, old school, console, PC, young, mature, I to be able to have enough games in an isle so I can really search for the game I want. It is either that or they get some employees that can work with you or actually have a really knowledge about games.

To be fair, why would they want to hirer the typical knowledge "Gamer". You see how forum battles get over games, think they really want to bring that in? And it's not like you should get the job either just because you know more games then them.

GS never had any hiring policies about gamers to my knowledge. They just want good employees who will encourage (read: tell) people to buy used games instead of new ones and hawk GS's membership thing at you every time you walk in the store. The only reason GS used to have more "real" gamers working there was because gamers used to apply there in droves whereas few non-gamers did. And like Shinoto said, a gamer the likes of what you see on forums would probably be more of a liability than an asset to a game store.

The only reason I know of it a bunch of regulars in the PC Gaming forum seem to swear by it... I don't even know what genre this marvelous master piece is supposed to be.ChiliDragon
FPS/RPG hybrid type thing, I think. I've played a bit of its sequel, and I bought the game when Steam had a sale, but I haven't tried it yet.

It seems to be like 50/50. Some know what they are talking about some don't.

Plus they aren't going to know every game off the top of there head. I have never head ofDeus Ex. Plus it isn't supposed to come out till 2011. Expecting an employee to know every game coming out into 2011. is stupid.

Deus Ex is a popular gaming series, that's not the first game, hell the first Deus Ex won more GOTY awards than any other game that came out that year.

@bobbleheadedrogue: That's because you only just started gaming. Deus Ex was released in 2000 for PC only.

It's an FPS/RPG/Stealth hybrid.

Jeez, how is it possible that this many people have never heard of Deus Ex? FFS people it's pretty much the only game that rivals Ocarina of Time as "best game ever made" in every thread of said title that gets made here.
