The ps2 tends to have a very bad laser and will not read or skip disks that have too many scratches. If you have the fat ps2 your chances are higher. Best to put it into a normal dvd player.zaku101
Im talking these are new dvds Im buying. I first noticed it the other night I bought Pathfinder used from a video store and it did this so I returned it and got another copy becuase I saw a scratch. The new copy was flawless and it skipped in the exact same spot. It happened today too with a brand new movie I just bought from Target. This has never happened until like the past week so it just started happening.
The old PS2 DVD drives are known to break after a fair amount of use. To possibly extend the life a little further you could take the unit apart and clean the laser "eye" with a cotton swab with a tiny bit of isopropyl alcohol on the end. I have also seen guides on the internet about how to adjust the laser to make it work again. Of course the easiest method would be to just buy a new slim PS2.CheeChee_Macko
Ill probably do that considering Ive been working and have a ton of money in the bank right now.
Random note: I got my 360 back from MS woooooo excited. :)
...whenever I watch a dvd about halfway through the movie it will be unable to read a disc...bitemeslippy
It sounds like the problem might be occurring when the laser attempts to transition to the second layer of a dual layered disc. The Ps2 is an awesome system, but the DVD laser is definitely its Achilles heel. Many people have also reported disc read errors specifically with dual layered games like Xenosaga or Rogue Galaxy.
As CheeChee_Macko said, disc read errors can sometimes be resolved by cleaning the lasers lens, changing its positioning, or even adjusting the potentiometers that regulate its intensity. You can find online tutorials on how to do all of this, but if you are primarily concerned with playing DVD movies, you may be better off just using a dedicated DVD player.
try to use one of those discs that cleans the optical lens on the inside of the Ps2
it usually needs to be cleaned after a 10 hours of using your system
if that doesnt work, then i cant be of any help
but if it does...then that disc can also clean other things like DVD players or CD drives, most of them also come with a 8 cm cleaning disc (in case you have a gamecube i guess)
My suggestions would be to get either a Slim Lined PS2, which plays dvd's rather well from experience, or buy a regular dvd player.
If anything, I've experienced weird playback from my PS3 when playing dvd's. When putting in dvd's in my PS3, the playback always starts like in the middle of the end credits, or in the middle of a movie or something. That's probably because I have a measly 40 gig PS3. Oh well.
