...For what system?...I am presuming the Wii...and if that is the case the N46 and earlier games would be emulated purely on downloaded software and the Gamecube games you still need to use the disk...which aka hardware B/C

If you need the disk...then its Hardware B/C

If you don't need...then it is Emulation B/C

But Emulation still uses the same graphics as the earlier games...maybe slightly upscaled to look better on a HDTV but still the same...if they are upscaled to look better that is with the console itself.

oh, i thought if it was emulation its not "authentic" graphics from the past just a boot leg version of it

Nope...what you are thinking of is Rom Hacks and Bootlegged Games lol...Don't worry about getting one of those...in order to get something like that you have to deliberately go out of your way to painstakingly find one somewhere probably through the computer lol.

That isn't necessarily true. With bleem for DC it uses actual PS1 discs and it is still emulation. It basically turned DC into an upscale PS1 player. And technically, ANYTHING that isn't original;i.e. the original disc and the original system is emulation. Some of it is legal if its from the companies though like with the virtual console and PSN. Like another poster said, the graphics are tweaked(upscaled) abit to look better on today's TVs, but it's still the same ROM, we're just not using the same cartridge and hardware to display it.

I'm almost positive that the PS3 uses software emulation even for PS1 disks. I may be off base a little bit, but I think the original model of the PS3 had a PS2 CPU and GPU and some software emulation filled in the cracks. Wii virtual console is definitely software emulation as is bleamcast. The Genesis model 1 had the key components of the SMS built in so you could use the Power Base Converter to play SMS games on your Genesis through hardware emulation.

Hardware emulation is generally more authentic with all the spits and sputters made by the limits of the hardware where as software emulation can(unless certain limits are set) look better. I suppose you could call an NES clone system an emulation system. These are generally pretty "authentic" because they use an NOC(NES on a chip). An NOC has the same limitations as an original Nintendo but due to advancements in technology, all that can fit on one chip.

For Sony Yes. All Playstation 3's Phat and Slim use software Emulation for Playstation 1discbased games. Xbox 360 used Software Emulation for Xbox 1 disc based games. For Xbox live Original Xbox classics, And Sony PSN PS1 classics and Nintendo Wii are The original game code Re-sold to you via Download. So These services are not reallyBackwards compatibility at all. Just a re-release of the Games viadigital download.

True Backwards compatibility is having an Actual Playstation 1 or Playstation 2 disc work in a Playstation 3. Or Original Xbox disc in Xbox 360. The wii is Only B/C with gamecube games. The rest N64,SNES,NES etc are just Resold games via download. Not true B/C at all.

For the record... PS3 is not compatible for PS2 games, anymore. They dropped backwards compatibility of the PS2 about 2 or 3 years ago.

so in other words its the same game but just in a different format, but wouldnt resold games be form of backwards compatibility? since they are old gameson new systems?

No, rerelased games like PSOne Classics or Virtual Console games are always emulated. True BC would require the physical disc or cartridge from the original system.

Say, if I download Super Mario 64 on the VC, I obviously wouldn't be able to play it on an N64. All I'm getting is a downloadable version of the original game that can only be played on my Wii, so it actually isn'tbackwards compatibility at all.
