It seems like it just started...
Kinda like how it felt that the Nintendo 64 had just started when Nintendo came out with the Gamecube.
I think the next gen will start in Q4 2011, so we're exactly halfway.Floppy_JimThat might not be that far off. Rumors say nextgen will start 2011/12.
I remember reading an interview with someone from Sony when the system just came out and was taking heat for being so expensive. He said the plan was for the PS3 to be around for about 8 years. Don't know the source, should be in the news arcives on this site.Mr_Glorius
This much was said in Sony's keynote at E3. Generally Sony bases its strategy on a 10 year plan for its console, but then, generally Sony's console has a huge lead in sales and is priced well with respect to its competitors. Without the success they enjoyed with the PS2 and PSX, I just can't imagine PS3 going for 10 years. We'll see.
Rumors say nextgen will start 2011/12.gunswordfistSadly, the next gen is officially planned to start the day after the end of the world.
PS1 introduced on 1995 and discontinued on 2006. PS2 life span was 2000-current. Still games are being released for PS2. But we can say PS2 has reached final stage of its life. It took 7 years after PS2-release for Sony to introduce PS3. If we say, they planned PS3 for at least 6 years, then PS3 should officially last 2012-end.
So IMHO, PS3 owners can use it till 2012/13 before PS4 happens.
I don't like M$ because they always jump the tracks and don't care for all. See what happend to xbox-original users and their games, XP-to-vista transition. I won't be surpised if X720 (or whatever it is) will come out on 2010.[QUOTE="gunswordfist"]Rumors say nextgen will start 2011/12.Cherokee_JackSadly, the next gen is officially planned to start the day after the end of the world. Oh a 2012 joke. I was about to make one myself. lol
Thats the way it feels. I already see links to articles saying crap like 'xbox720 better have blueray" and Nintendo already has Wii 2 set for 2011. _AbBaNdOnWell 720 BETTER have BluRay. lol

Doubt it, I reckon from what I have read, digital downloads will be the future for games, it makes logical sense from a financial view, and I think this generation of consoles will last a lot longer, i.e. Nintendo's Wii is still selling in droves and it doesn't really have next gen graphics.
To be honest I wouldn't mind seeing Microsoft bring out a new system in fall of 2010, that's still a full 2 years away. Lifecycles for consoles are typically 5 to 6 years and for me 6 years is the maximum I'd like to wait. Even if they do bring out a new system in 2010 it doesn't mean the 360 would die off on that day. In all likelyhood it will probably still be well supported for another 1 to 2 years anyway. I firmly believe that their next system will be fully backwards compatible as well.Archangel3371I disagree. It would be two full years because '08 is almost over and its winter not fall. I have a 360 because its current gen. I don't want to be behind a gen again. I want the console with the best games of today and I have it. 2010 would be way too soon for me to do another gen jump.
I've said this in another thread.
The Xbox 720 (codename still) is in development at ATI/AMD right now. It will not be released earlier than 2011. The PS4 and next Nintendo system are still being shopped around for who will develop and manufacture it. They are not even in the idea stages yet beyond a few guys at corporate who want to see some big buzz word technology in it probably.
I would say are are literally, and I mean literally, at the half way point of this generation, at least in terms of console cycles.
They some say this generation of consoles will last 10 years, others say until 2011. We might as well make the most of now...
I meen there are some pretty awesomly cool games coming out soon!

Wait, isn't it that console cycles typically last for 6 years (with the exception of MS)? PS3 and Wii have only been out for a little over 2 so to reach midpoint would require about another year before we can officially declare as such.
Anywho, can't wait to see what PS3 titles will look after 2 years. If Heavy Rain is of any indication, then what the PS3 may offer within that period may very well be staggering.

Well technically Microsoft did start the HD generation of consoles. But no matter what way you look at it, it's not MORE than half over as the topic creator postulated.Well technically Microsoft did start the HD generation of consoles. But Sony said that the next generation doesn't start until they say it does. :P

But their current motto is "Wait for it". So it hasn't started theoretically. Please Log In to post.
