LOL, sometimes I wonder how much the average GameSpot-er actually interacts with women.
I'm a female, age 23, going to law school, with a job and a large social network and I play Bioshock, GTA, Assassin's Creed, Halo 3, Metroid etc. etc.
One of my friends is married, totally hot, doing her Master's degree and is a WOW freak. Another female friend of mine is super excited about MGS4.
There are PLENTY of women who game - but insecure boys won't come across us because 1) they know how to actually talk to women; 2) they talk down to us and we're way too smart for that; or 3) they have no idea that we're gamers because we don't fit a stereotype they have.
Wow the world you all live in must really suck. Of the 40 or so on my friends list on XBL a good third of them are women, most of whom rock out on games like COD4, Halo 3, and RB6:V.
In my "real" world surroundings I don't know a single woman who doesn't game to some extent. Even my grandmothers spend time with Pogo.com and similar sites. My sisters routinely route my arse in Halo, and I cant get my Rock Ban and GH3 away from the girls.
I think the "problem" you all have finding these gamers stems from the fact that as soon as one of them identifies themselves as a lady, the dorkish morons who call themselves gamers jump on them instantly and just constantly berate them or try to show their teenage manhood by being as crude as possible. Most of the women I know and play with choose sexless online indentities, and only use the microphone with people they know and trust.
If people weren't so rude and childish online, more woman gamers would come out of the closet as it were, and people would be surprised by their numbers.

Very well said, time and time again I come across females on online games, and the first thing that happens is the entire room just sits there and sweats there nuts or critizes them..I don't blame a big portion of females not wanting to play video games, or the other half keeping it secret that they are female.
I'm 30 and a married mother of 3 and I am completely addicted to games.
I play God of War, DMC, COD4, The Darkness, Gears of War, Soul Calibur, Prince of Persia, Castlevania and the list goes on and on and on. Lately I've been playing a lot of Oblivion and I recently finished Marvel Ultimate Alliance with my husband for like the third time.
Of my 3 kids 2 are daughters, ages 8and 6 and they play Gauntlet, Champions of Norrath, Lego Star Wars, DMC, Prince of Persia and of course those annoying girly games like bratx and princesses etc. They also own a Vsmile and a Vflash (kiddies consoles)
I don't really thinkI fit the definition of "hardcore" But I like buying, collecting and playing games and thinkI have a pretty well rounded collection.
[QUOTE="krakout31"]depends what u consider hardcore though8)Bass7
Isn't there some definition somewhere (was it in a sticky or something?).
Its recognizing this piece by sound only. Wait, that's old school. How about knowing who killed Aeris and which Triforce piece goes where?
Half the world's population is female, and there are an awful lot of videogames out there. I'm pretty sure I can confirm that there is a female gamer out there. Probably more than one, even! :P
I wonder why this topic comes up so often. It's like, because the market caters more to men, that women are in a minority (of some sort, anyway) there's this big insecurity complex that results. Some try to prove that there are as many female gamers out there as male (...no, solitaire at work doesn't count) or that there aren't very many at all (what percentage play 20-30 hours a week of Call of Duty 4 during workdays?), but the truth is pretty boring. There are somewhat less female gamers out there than male ones, simply because there are more games made by and for men. The split isn't that dramatic, but some statistics, depending on what they're measuring, can make it look that way.
Fact of the matter is as long as there's something that has a broad social base, except in very extreme cases, both genders get involved. It's a bit of a problem that the split isn't even in the gaming industry yet, because the medium itself is gender neutral (though the content skews male), but that's something that the industry is going to grow out of, and already is, to a large degree.
check out the frag dolls. they played the guys from bungie in last weeks humpday challenge. sound pretty hardcore to me.
So funny that men still think video games are "guy stuff".
I go to school, I have friends, I`m an average student, and the general opinion is, I`m not dorky, geeky, I don`t wear glasses and sit around all day long with my videogames. I have a life, a pretty good one. Games are on the side, and I love them.
And no, I`m not just talking about The sims 2. I`ve played Halo, Tomb Raider, Kabuto, Max Payne, Freedom Fighters, ES Oblivion and other PC games. There was a time I loved real time strategy games. Played all of them. Got sick of them though. My computer is not yet strong enough to play recent games like Crysis, Bio Shock etc. but since I`m planning on buying a PS3 when I have a chance, I`ll just play Assasin`s creed and (I`m dying to play that one) Heavenly Sword... they actually look better. I`m into sword fighting now :P
I`m not sure I currently qualify for "a hardcore gamer" but I don`t really care. I like what I like.
So there. Although there used to be mostly male gamers, the girls are catching up. Not just the dorky ones.
P.S: I hate MMORPGs
