The PS2 site is still around. You just can't access it from the top anymore.
But yeah, I would say the PS2 is just about dead at this point.
I still see major store chains selling PS2 consoles and PS2 games. The fact that most of the PS3 systems are not backwards compatible, should keep some sales for the PS2. My Ps2 broke a few months ago and I went out to purchase a brand new system.
No way! I remember reading something on here a couple of weeks ago about how they were still selling like hot cakes internationally! I guess the removal of backwards capatibility on the newer PS3 models may have something to do with it.
if store selling ps2 i will keep buying ps2 game cuz it's realiable and fun.most of the game have clearance bonus and you can play it twice and more:P
The Playstation 2 is now dead. The last games are something like the baseball game the Bigs 2011 and the WWE wrestling game WWE superstars both are just about to be realeased March 29th and April 4th (IF I remember correctly) Then that is it for PS2.
There may be a few more last games in 2011 but that is it. 2011 is the last year of the Playstation 2. I'm thinking of buying the PS2 version of the WWE game just because it is one of the last PS2 games released. The PS2 version is only $30.00 new even though I have Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. I will buy the Playstation 2 game. Just to "call an end to the sixth generation of videogame consoles"
PS2 has finally ended in 2011, Not bad for a system who's first games were available in the 2000.
Playstation 2 Oct 2000- May 2011 Rip
Sony will mostlikely announce the lastday of the Playstation 2 this year when the final one rolls off the assembly line in 2011.
Wow, amazing that the system came out 11 years ago. I was just starting high school when the system came out. I ended up getting the system in the summer between high school and my first semester of college. The very end of high school, as the Dreamcast and N64 kept me busy during that period of my life. The PS2 is the main reason I was late getting into this generation of systems
Wow after 11yrs, it may be dead. But obviously there're still a lot of ppl playing it (including me). This is one legendary console!
Oh man, didn't even notice that. Yeah, kind of sad that the PS2 is considered 'legacy' now.
I've been playing nothing but PC for a while. I booted up a game of Freedom Fighters and was shocked at how terrible it looked. It gave me bad deja vu of the time my friend gave me her N64 after we had been playing gamecube for ages, and I turned on Mario 64 and was amazed to see that it no longer seemed photorealistic (I was 11 >_>).
Also kinda frightening how the older games start to feel clunky now. You can complain all you want about how modern games are simplified gameplay-wise, but if they got only one thing right it's more fluid controls (unless you're talking about some broken bargain bin junk game).
It's weird. Technology marches on.
I don't know. Usually, last gen console games don't last this long. When the PS2 completely dies, then I will say that it has died a very honorable death. How has it lasted this long?!

[QUOTE="turtlethetaffer"]I don't know. Usually, last gen console games don't last this long. When the PS2 completely dies, then I will say that it has died a very honorable death. It still has a ways to go to catch up with the Nintendo Famicom, which was released in July 1983 and not officially discontinued until September 2003. Or the Atari 2600, released in October 1977 and finally discontinued in January 1992.How has it lasted this long?!

The PS2 is on its last legs. The only games that come out for it are sports games and ports from PSP. I say that we might see madden 11 on it and then that is it. The system has been in stores almost 11 years. I would say it had it's run. I wonder how long the PS3 will remain on shelves when the next generation starts? Not just the PS3, but I wonder how long the current generation systems will sell along side the next generation? I don't see Microsoft supporting the 360 after they come out with their next system. I say they will immediately stop production of the 360 when the new one comes out just like they did with the first Xbox. I say PS3 will last one year after PS4 comes out. The Wii brand is too popular just to take off the market, I say that Nintendo will keep it going at least 2 years after the next Nintendo comes out.
Sony is still officially supporting it but let's face it - it's a dead console and only interesting because the PS3 lacks backwards support (except for the discontinued 60 gb model) and because it's cheap.
There are no good games comming for it anymore, let alone exclusives.
pretty much , and I think the majority of people buying a PS2 now, are people who might have owned it at some point, but are simply buying a replacement due to the older PS2 models being very unreliable. actually, Im thinking of buying a PS2 since my old one has some issues (mainly some disc reading if the disc is less then perfect, also it has major issues with PS1 games)Sony is still officially supporting it but let's face it - it's a dead console and only interesting because the PS3 lacks backwards support (except for the discontinued 60 gb model) and because it's cheap.

The PS2's gaming library is way too huge for it to ever die. The list of great games on that platform still out number the ones on most current consoles. Now do I play it as much? Nope.Dead?Nope. Maybe in a retirement home and gets brought out every once in a while for some fresh air.lol
When we talk about the "death" of a console we usually mean that there are no more noteworthy games comming out for the system. From a certain perspective even the Atari 2600 is still "alive" because it's still getting homebrew games. But the prime of the console is long over and so is PS2's now. Which, of course, doesn't mean that the console won't live on as a legacy platform.
Man, are people beating a dead horse or what? How many of these "Is PS2 Dead?" threads do we get? We must get one a week on here.
its because its quite unusual for a console to be alive for 11 years without any sign that its getting discontinued. other then a few systems like the PS1, the 2600 and I think NES, few consoles were in production for that long (the Neo Geo had games being released until 2004, but the console itself was discontinued in the late 90s as far as production went)Man, are people beating a dead horse or what? Agreed. The PS2 lives on! :Pthey don't make ps2 games anymore but it still has one of the strongest game libraries out there

Yah, i was in my 2nd year of my college when ps2 was released. I was not yet so updated with gaming news during those days, that's why i always prayed that the MGS2 should be released for the PS1. Well unfortunately, it was released for the PS2. Six years later, May of 2006, I finally got my slim PS2.. Now i have my PS3.Wow, amazing that the system came out 11 years ago. I was just starting high school when the system came out. I ended up getting the system in the summer between high school and my first semester of college.
