I gotta say Uncharted 2. Most polished game Ive played this gen.

Part of me wants to say Batman: Arkham Asylum. It was a big surprise, and since most superhero games aren't very good, I was shocked it turned out as well as it did. viewtiful26
No matter how you slice it, Batman: AA is one of the best games of this generation. Polished, gorgeous, and the gameplay is fluid and varied.
And that combat engine is franklyuntouchable.
Demon's Souls for me. It is the freshest game I've played this gen, and is something I will keep going back to for years. Everything else is a battle for second place.:P Uncharted 2, Batman, Assassin's Creed 2 and NSMB Wii are duking it out for second place in my mind. At this point, AC2 is leading the pack, but I'll wait till I beat it to say for sure.
For now:
1. Uncharted 2
2. Demon's Souls
3. Batman: Arkham Asylum
I'm sure U2 and Dragon Age will duke it out for GS's game of the year position, but the votes of the users will be unknown until the last few days of the year, I guess.
This year(for me at least, gaming wise I'm rather fickle)was an outstanding time for games. So much so that it is really difficult for me to pick a GOTY, which is the first that has happened in years.
Demon's Souls: Wonderful game that gave me that "old school" vibe with it's challenge, and some great creativity for online play. It's a game I keep going back to. Based on that I do find myself scratching my head when people talk about the lack of replay value. I have spent more time on this game simply trying to learn every enemies nuance just so I could be the perfect killing machine. To give a game that much devotion is saying a lot.
Batman: Finally!! I have been waiting for a good batman game so long that I had almost given up on the idea when this game came out. Everything about this game felt genuine. Joker, Harley, Scarecrow, even Arkham itself. They made everything look fantastic, the controls were spot on, and the gameplay was a blast. They did EVERYTHING right, and the little extras like challenge mode and Riddler's secrets, and there is a ton of game here. Loved it, if there is a sequel I actually don't want them straying too far from their original formula. Everything just felt right.
Dragon Age: Still haven't finished this game....and honestly I am in no rush. Not very often you care about your companions that much, but I found myself liking every character in my little ragtag band. That alone says a lot. Bioware did a great job in not only making believable characters, but also a believable world.
Thsoe are just the three that pop out immediately in my mind, there are many others but for top contention they are my top three. Personal GOTY? Demon's Souls, and just by a hair.
Not that it matters anyway, from a gamer standpoint the real winner is the gamer himself. It's been a great year for games.
Well I haven't played the new Zelda or Dragon Age yet. Once I get through those I'll have a better idea. But so far it's Batman: Arkham Asylum. It's not as polished visually as some of the more theatrical games out lately, but it is still beautifully done and outshines many other games. It is probably the best "Batman" themed game I've ever played. After the fantastic Joker we saw in Dark Knight, I was afraid the characterization in this game would be underwhelming and too comic-bookish, but it was dark and gritty. And the gameplay exceeded my expectations, with some great stealth action and seemless group combat.
Now I just need to find time to finish it.
Batman really was amazing. I wanted a little more stealth and a little less combat, or maybe a setup like Uncharted 2 where you can play stealthy until you alert someone and then it switches to combat. My only complaint with Arkham Asylum was that they segregated the stealth and the combat into different sections instead of having more of a gray area between them where you could resort to combat in stealthy situations without instantly dying, or use stealth in the more combat situations to thin their ranks before engaging them in open combat. That said, the game was ridiculously well executed. The voice acting was top notch, and they buried a ton on Batman lore into that game.Well I haven't played the new Zelda or Dragon Age yet. Uncharted 2. I just finished it and can honestly say it easily deserves goty. I now have more respect for the PS3 and what it can do. It just takes a developer like Naughty Dog to make it happen. Oh, and I am primarily a PC gamer.
I've also been playing MW2, but it really is not quite goty worthy. While good stuff, it's just not innovative and as successfully ambitious as Uncharted 2 to be goty.
And also I've been playing DA:O (yes I've been a busy gamer lately.) Still early in the game, but so far it seems too familiar to be a goty winner.
As much as I love Batman: AA, Dragon Age, Muramasaand ACII, the most fun I've had playing a game this year was my time spent with Shadow Complex. For it being a DL title, there sure was quite a bit of content in there. Being an avid fan of Super Metroid didn't hurt either...
*NOTE: I will be purchasing a PS3 sometime around X-Mas (finally!), so U2, DS and R&C may make an appearance in my year-end GOTYs. :)
Definately modern warfare 2.. But I haven't played a lot of this year's new releases. Not much xbox time. I'm sure some of the others that are listed here are much better because quite honestly, modern warfare 2's gameplay wasn't revoloutionary... but the online was well worth paying for.
Uncharted 2.
RE5, KZ2 and Flower are VERY close second.
MW2, Infamous and Batman AA are VERY close third. :P
It's really hard for me to say. Uncharted 2 was an incredible game, but for some reason Batman AA gave me a more fulfilling gaming experience, and the extra content has kept me playing it long after completion unlike Uncharted. It plays beautifully, the presentation and polish are stellar (although not quite up to the level of U2's), the attention to detail is second to none, the combat system is one of the most enjoyable I've played, the story is compelling and well presented, and most importantly, it really made you feel like you were Batman. It had its flaws, but it did nothing to tarnish the overall experience. It is very apparent that it is a labor of love from die-hard fans.
As much as I love U2, I'd have to give the edge to Batman. I'm really, REALLY looking forward to the sequel.

Rekunta
oh man, I have to second that.
The Riddler trophies, riddles, and the chronicles of Arkhum were so well done. They weren't just some random collectables you need to unlock for no reason, they actually had their own back stories and plot of their own. It all felt so rewarding to get the last challenge. THAT's how you do collectables! I hope every developer takes note.
The narrative was incredibly well done as well. Right up there with Uncharted as the BEST in the industry.
toss up between Batman and Modern Warfare 2. I think I got to give it to Batman, even though I beat it pretty quickly, and I'll get waaay more mileage out of MW2, batman hit all the right notes between nostalgia for the cartoon (good to have you back Mr. Skywalker. you still got the Joker voice down pat), and the stealth/action was all so flawlessly executed. been wanting a game like that since The Dark Knight came out.
other honorable mentions
Episodes from Liberty City
Forza 3
It'll most likely end up being Modern Warfare 2 for my GotY but damn if I don't have a bunch of other games fighting tooth and nail right along with it. Games like Forza 3, Halo: ODST, Batman: AA, Street Fighter IV, and Blazblue are all in the running plus I haven't played Assassin's Creed 2 yet so that'll most likely be a contender as well.
1st Dragon Age. Without a doubt the best RPG of this console generation.
2nd goes to Uncharted 2
3rd Batman: Arkham Asylum
Uncharted 2 for sure. Just the Gameplay for Single and Multi Player is amazing. Most polished game I've ever played, Naughty Dog deserves to get the recognition for this because they've done such a great job making every aspect of the game perfect. The voice acting is some of the best I've heard. You work hard, you get rewarded for it.
Some others: Dragon Age, GTA IV Episodes (If those count), and Modern Warfare 2
