...leaning? Like, you push Q or E to lean left or right, allowing you to peak around the corner without exposing your entire body. At first I never saw the point in it, but now I've grown so attached to it that I am irritated when an FPS doesn't have it.

So which FPS deserves the credit for introducing this feature (or at least implementing it in the genre for the first time)? The earliest shooter I've played that has leaning, is FEAR from 2005. But I skipped pretty much 1 generation of PC shooters, so I'm sure there are earlier games. Anyone?

The first in the Thief series is earlier than any of those save Goldeneye.

I was just about to say that. You could peek around corners like nobody's business in that game! :D

Thief was the first game that I can remember having the ability to lean left or right.

Leaning left and right is silly. FPS's just need to add a cover system and be done with it.

Um... don't a lot of them already have that? :? And I think, now that I think about it, that if you're behind a corner and peeking around it, you're peeking out from behind cover, aren't you? :P

I mean a real cover system not just wall humping. A third person cover system with situational awareness so I can pop in and out or blind fire. Only ones I can think of right now that do have cover are Rainbow Six Vegas 2 and James Bond Quantum of Solace, I'm sure there are more but not many.
