With the Playstation 3, Sony couldn't take the chance of building it without the Blu Ray. Even though it might have jeopardized their console lead, Blu-Ray is Sony's chance at getting ahead in the media market. Even if the Playstation brand comes in second this console war, if it took the PS3 to make BR the dominant format, then it was well worth it.

The profits from BR could be huge compared to what the PS3 would bring in if it had comprimised to be first place. Even if the PS3 drops to second, it's still a strong enough brand that its future consoles can remain competetive in the market. Sony makes $ off every BR disc produced since it licenses and produces BR.

Sony would be making a huge mistake if it didn't include BR. They couldn't afford to let that opportunity for BR to dominate and draw in loads of $$$.

Anybody agree?

(I don't like the BR and Sony's move, this is just my take on why Sony did it.)

I just can't imagine PS3 without a next-gen format. Everyone knows that with the PS3, Sony has secured it's grip on the movie industry. Even though it works as a trojan Horse I'm glad that Sony decided to go with the blu-ray on PS3.

The format war isn't over yet. I heard that a couple studios are going to use HD-DVD exclusively. And while I have nothing against Blu-ray, I don't like being forced to pay for something I'm not going to use.

I'm growing weary of HD-DVD vs. Blu-Ray. We're getting formats shoved down our throats that no one asked for, hardly anyone cares about, or has much use for.

I'll just stick with my ancient DVD format and not have to concern myself with the latest HD nonsense or paying $30 for a movie.

If the ps3 didn't have blu-ray it would be #1 right now. There was absolutly NO reason at all to push a new movie format, HD-DVD would have failed all on it's own because noone wants a new movie format yet.

Im glad they did it. All that needs to happen now is the lowering in price of the actual DVDs now.

The only reason they went HD-DVD only is because they were paid $150 Million. Right now it doesn't make any sense for studios to be exclusive to HDDVD with Bluray dominating on all fronts. Unless they are bribed by Toshiba who is getting desperate.

It depends... how much money will the Blu-Ray market make for Sony?
