http://www.computerandvideogames.com/405164/sony-wont-take-a-big-hit-introducing-ps4-like-it-did-with-ps3/?cid=OTC-RSS&attr=CVG-General-RSS

Probably in order to dispel any lingering concerns about the PS4 launch price, Sony's Chief financial Officer Masaru Kato had this to say:

"One thing I can say for the new platform, PS4, how it is different from past platforms, is that the amount of investment that goes into the basic architecture components for the hardware device is much lighter than the past platform.

To be a little more specific, when we launched PS3, initially we had a negative margin on each unit that we sold which was quite big. It did come down over time as we reduced the cost of the console, however the initial investment was quite big due to the fact that we had to design the Cell chipset from scratch which cost a lot of money, hundreds of millions of dollars.

In addition to that, we had to invest money developing the silicon conductor fabrication technology, as well as the capital expenditures for producing the chipset. All of these amounted to billions of dollars of investment for the platform which had to be recouped as we sold software and hardware.

Compared to that business model, PS4 utilises a core chipset. Yes, we have designed it with our own technology, but the core of the CPU is something that's available ready, so we're not designing the chipset from the ground up.

In addition to that, for semiconductor processor technology and fabrication process technology we are relying on outside sources. For production capacity, also we are relying on outside sources, which means that we don't spend our own money to get the chipset ready. That, I think, is the fundamental difference in the business model this time and the reason for us not taking a big hit in the initial year of the introduction of the PS4."Kato

To summarize: the PS3 was very expensive because the CPU and other pieces of hardware had to be designed and produced internally, resulting in an absolutely massive investment for Sony. Not so for the PS4, which uses third party technology, which is considerably cheaper for Sony to purchase and market. I would also add that blu-ray drives were very expensive back in 2006, which contributed substantially to the price increase of the PS3, but is no longer an issue today.

This is one of the reasons why I thought the console could launch at $300.

Then they dropped the 8GB GDDR5 RAM bombshell and my hopes were shatterred.

Probably not $300 but since they will be using a lot they wont be paying normal retail prices. They will have a deal setup with the manufacturers of the hardware components.

I guess it's fair to say it will be less than the $599 price of the 60GB launch PS3.

To be thought of as considerably cheaper, I'd say $400 - $450 is what we're looking at. That would price it only $100 more than the deluxe WiiU (not counting store bundles and discounts). That's not bad.

It's well known that the biggest blunder with the PS3 was producing everything in-house. The PS4 has much more going for it out the gate than the PS3 did. That being said, I still don't see that console being priced at $300. I'm fully expecting two SKUs, a cheaper one that would cost $399-$449 and a more expensive one ranging from $449-$499. I also wouldn't be surprised to see a subsidized model, however I think that Microsoft will go that route over Sony.

Well PS3 also had a blu ray drive, which was new and expensive at the time, not to mention they had the PS2 hardware in there as well at launch.

Sounds like Sony is doing most things right this generation.  They showed pretty robust online capabilities which will be necessary going forward this generation,a nd they played it smart with the production of the hardware.  Whoever was the main designer of the PS4 got the hint.

Do you want Sony to sell this console at another huge loss like with the PS3? It ain't happening at that price.

I'm expecting $450 or $500, realistically.

I tend to agree, though the $499 model will be the one worth getting, while the cheaper one will just be a way of giving Sony the ability to claim sub $400.

This is quite encouraging for the PS4, especially if they can quickly manage to break even or perhaps make a small profit on each console sold.

Personally, I would be okay with the $450 price mark (which would translate to roughly £300).

One SKU, $400 baby! Mark my words.

As someone who has watched Sony make mistake after mistake after mistake with the PS3, it is SO nice to see them firing on all eight here. It just seems like they are laser-focused on taking away all the reasons not to buy a PS4. I'm most encouraged by the developer response. Hell, Ubisoft was just crowing about the system today:

ANYONE who has watched Sony's handling of hardware engineering with the PS2 and PS3 can spot how amazing it is to see a developer beaming about developing on a Sony platform. If developers are pumped, I'm pumped, because I know some amazing shlt is gonna come as a result of that.

A $400 launch price would definitely make me a day one buyer. Although I wouldn't be surprised if they had a more expensive, $500 SKU as well.

Part of me wants them to ditch the multiple SKU bullshit, but I think they cannot take a chance not bundling the system with any motion control when MS has designed their entire system around it. I am certain they are waiting to see the reaction to this new Kinect and if it gets a lot of mainstream press then they will have a $499 bundle with eye toy and a move controller.

$399 is pretty much set in stone at this point. I do think Sony could have a SKU cheaper than that.

That's what I think too. Anything cheaper than $400 and one would have to question the hardware. Anything more expensive than $500 and one would have to question the company's sanity.

This multiple SKU thing is something I hope does not happen. I wasn't a fan when they introduced it this gen, and I hope it stops here. I'd be ok with different bundles, kind of like the NES with the Deluxe Set, Action Set, and Power Set, where you got different accessories or games, but the hardware was the same.

Considering the reports about Sony's PlayStation 4, I expect to be sold at an assking price of $449 and no more for the initial model. The PlayStation 4 is getting positive remarks from Ubisoft which is a big game company, so it may be a purchase worth acquiring.

As long as it's not priced above $500, I'll be getting a PS4 at launch with Watch Dogs, Infamous 2nd Son and Assassins Creed 4. I've currently got $480 saved up and should have $800-$900 by the time the system launches.
