I've some seen pretty awful marketing campaigns from Sony. Hell, they didn't even bother running ads for Starhawk, PS All Stars and Twisted Metal last year. But for some reason, they are running a super bowl ad for God of War Ascension. A franchise that's going to sell millions anyway.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=adXLHPLa3Rw

The main thing that pisses me off is that they are using Live Action for this ad. Why the f*ck would you want to do that when your game looks like God of War?

Sony's worst enemy is their own marketing team or whoever is incharge of picking the marketing teams. They haven't shown anything on the single player aside from an out of context E3 demo playthrough. We dont know what the story is. We dont know who Kratos is fighting. We dont know why the game is being made other than to show off the MP, and we are only a month away from launch. When was the last time we saw something like this? Let alone for a franchise this big?

And now we are getting a Live Action 30 second $3 million teaser instead of an actual story trailer. What a disaster.

I find Sony's marketing quite good, or at least who they outsource to quite good. But that is just opinion.

As to why not advertise well Starhawk for example, lets make a tv spot for a short of sequel to a niche game we made a few years back. PS all stars, it was the first in the series, they advertised alot for it, and i remember seeing plenty of tv ad spots

Halo Reach had a live action trailer if I am not mistaken, a flagship franchise for Microsoft. Why can't God of War have one.

Hopefully Sony's marketing of the PS4 is better than this.

well, i don't think it would be a big seller if sony didn't advertise it heavily. god of war is a series that gets played by a ton of people that don't read video game websites so the super bowl is a good place to advertise.

that said, i think live action trailers are awful. they remind me of that "gritty mario" picture. they take parts of the game out of it's own world and try to put it in ours. a lot of games, even good ones, can't hold up to that.

A live action trailer may be well timed to coinside with the return of the massivley popular Spartacus TV show, so they may be able to swing a majority of the audience on that, however i think showing some gameplay footage may have been money better spent when advertising somewhere as big as the Super Bowl

Wow terrible ad, what a waste of $3 million. Thet havent show much gameplay footage, I got a bad feeling for this game, something is not right. They could have spend on the last of us. God of War sells , or they could have teased with the PS4 hehe

Why were you planning on buying an 8 hour game? It's going to have the shortest campaign since the first God of War. Redbox it on a weekend and beat it on both difficulties in less than 15 hours.

They focused on MP this time around instead of revamping the somewhat dated SP campaigns. No need for us to support that kind of rehash approach.

Boycott this God of War wannabe.  Bet it wasn't even made by the original devs.  Sony marketing will try anything to try and finally catch the 360.  But only people who ALREADY KNOW about GoW will be interested in this!  Don't they realize most average people will see 300 2 before they even play a videogame.

People who watch the Super Bowl aren't gamers if they are they play Farmville or Madden on Casual.  Sony is in a disaster selling their headquarters and they're the worst stock in 30 years.  Kaz Hirai ruined Sony they couldn't even keep up PSN.  Now they give away games on PlayStation + because it didn't have CRAP on it and most of the games on it are CRAPPY anyway.

People didn't even buy a NEW DMC so why would they buy an annualized GOW??  God of War IS NOT GTA and never will be this game has no chance at Top 10 at the end of the year.  YOu can probably beat this game in 3 hours same length as the Super Bowl.

Well you got to spend money to make money or so they say but a live-action ad, yuck. I don't think they are inherently bad but I thought the one for All Stars was awful. Hopefully this one will be much better.

Well on the bright side, their "WTF was that I just watched?" ad's are better than their "That was so awful I'll make a point NOT to buy it." ad's.

Why would they pay so much money to air a comercial to a broader audience if the commercial doesn't help the new audience understand what the heck this thing is.

The Kevin Butler ads were far and away the best advertising campaign Sony has ever done. I don't know what's going to happen on that front or if they'll ever bring him back.

Since last year's SB had over 110 million viewers, it's smart to advertise one of their flagship games during the broadcast. The ad's not for those that know about the game already, it's for the rest of the crowd. How many people are going to say, 'that looks pretty fun, I might just pick that up.'? Sure, the live action teaser looked like they are prepping for a film, but that's also to try and hook the none gamers. If they can add some beautiful looking gameplay and an interesting plot, people will remember it.

-

I think they should should have used that cash for TLoU instead. It's going to sell more as is, imagine if the 'casual' market gets a peek.

Didn't bother watching. I don't want a live action ad for a video game. Like those god-awful PS allstars ads. I was never interested in that game in the first place, but then I actually caught one of those commercials... wow. So lame it's awkward. Didn't even know what to say to the other people in the room, during the awkward silence that followed.

To put it in Superbowl. Anyways, it's utterly pointless if you know the game. But it's a great "uhh what is that" kind of add if you dont. Doesen't hurt that everybody is still in the 300 Spartans mood.

Modern games look amazing, but modern ad campaigns haven't gotten away from the age old trend of using CG and live action footage for television commercials. Damned if I know why.

Because that's the cost of getting prime spot during the Super Bowl.......it's nothing new. Hundreds of companies are gonna be doing the exact same damn thing. It's one of the biggest watched sporting events in America, so why shouldn't they pull out the stops? Even those that don't watch football normally get sweeped up in watching the Super Bowl. Hell for that matter, many tune in JUST to see the types of SB ads companies are gonna come up w/; sh** even other media outlets focus on the SB ads just as much as the game itself.

Apparently a one minute Super Bowl ad is $8 million so make that $4 million for this 30 second commerical.

Doesn't look like Sony's doing this though. Looks like it may just go up online on Friday.

What I was hoping though was an initial reveal of the Playstation 4 with a montage of awesome looking PS4 games in a one minute trailer directed by David Fincher or Michael Mann. Those guys know how to make ads, and it would've been a great way to reveal next gen games infront of 100 million people. With MS spending $500 million on the Kinect launch alone, I am surprised they aren't doing this. What's $8 million when you can reach 100 million people for the reveal of your biggest new hardware in 7 years?

Makes too much sense so it wont happen. But I will day dream about it and create an awesome montage in my head.

God Of War has always been top quality and every entry has been rather short. God Of War 2 and 3 were both 8-10 hours long and the first was 5-7 hours. Multiplayer may seem like the focus but it's not, it's the focus of the advertising right now. They already know that God Of War will sell due to their fantastic single player portion, but having a new multiplayer mode will leave people skeptical. So they are trying to sell that not just to the current fans but also new ones in hope of bringing in more players.

It makes perfect sense. If anything this may just be a bigger title than God Of War 3, given that they have all the tech in place and a better understanding of the hardware that will free up a lot of time for developement. Also keep in mind it does not make much sense to rethink God Of War this late in the generation. If they make one on PS4 than I would bet all major upgrades and changes would be seen there. This one will simply refine what we seen in God Of War 3, add more, and toss in a new multiplayer function.

Wait if that's a 2 minute long trailer and they're playing the whole thing shouldn't it be costing them 4 times that $3 million dollar 30 second ad?

That's not to say they'll play a teaser 30 sec ad instead. I was just wondering which one they're coughing the cash for.

....

Also that was a terrible ad.

The full length trailer is fine. Is it something us hardcore gamers that already know all about God of War want to see? No. But it's a tasteful trailer showcasing a popular franchise and reminding people that the game is on the way. It'll get people's attention and that's what Sony needs to start doing. Some advertising is better than no advertising, and honestly it's nice to see Sony taking the time to actually try and advertise their freaking franchises already.

Anyone watch the half hour gameplay video? That is too spoilery for my blood (its the first link), but I did read Kotaku's write-up (the second link) and it sounds like the campaign lives up to that of its predecessors.
