Thats right folks...They are discounting the 60gig Machine in the US

And it will be replaced by the 80gig with a free game...from the sounds of i, it will not price drop either. It will be back up to 599...

So we either have a massive PR misunderstanding here...Or the sequel to....599$ Animated GIFs? Photoshopped Pics? Grab your popcorn...its going to be entertaining to the max

Having just bought a PS3 for 500$ it doesn't affect me directly, however... they NEED to have the PS3 at or below 500$. They did it once with the 20gig, leaving only the 600$ model behind... I can't see them doing it twice. And if they do discontinue the 60gig, they damn well better drop the price of the new model then.

There's a whole mess of PS3 games coming out this holiday, and I want the PS3 to sells millions more by then, not only to support those games coming out... but so I have people to play against :).

I'm not buying it until I see it from more than one website, and from someone who's not a European representative. If it's true, though, then Sony is even stupider than I thought. :|

Given that SCEA is stating that the PS3 is selling significantly faster at the $500 pricepoint they would have to be insane to discontinue the practice of offering systems at such a price, even if that meant dropping the 80 GB to 500 bucks once the inventory of emotion engine equiped PS3s was cleared out. But Sony wiped out the old $500 model 'due to a lack of consumer demand' so such an action would be in line with past practice. What Sony showed off at E3 is very impressive, but it doesn't make a $200 gap substainable.

this has to be a misunderstanding. The PS3 is selling like mad at $499, I haven't seen one for sale in my city since monday. They would be shooting themselves in the footwith a move like this.

I just read this. Once the discounted 60gb models are sold out, that's it and they are back to a $600 80gb machine with worse backwards BC. What? The? Fugg? Not only that, europe gets no discount but a bundle instead, like their PSP strategy.

This is really disappointing. $500 is still too much for me, and backwards compatibility is important! I'd maybe consider spending more in order to play the entire PS2 catalog, but now this just makes no sense without the emotion engine and bakc up to $600.

This strategy works only if Sony can significantly increase their marketshare, at least to 40%. Sony should not have put together a Motorstorm bundle. It would be wiser to leave the game out, keep the 60 GB HDD, and stick with the $499 price point. Just when Sony's fortunes appeared to be turning, now I see a dog chasing its tail.

So, what's going on? Trying todrive sales and thenslowing downagain? Can their policies be so short-sighted? Perhaps they will do this by the time the TV service launches. Or whatever.

wow, good call. As for my prediction, I think the 80GB will drop price when all shipped 60GB are sold. .

The reason Europe (me) wasn't given the 80GB alternative is because Sony doesn't really care about the extra 20GB. Nope, right now they are concerned with extracting the EEC (emotion engine chip) which is costing them $30 per unit. Europe never had the EEC, so we don't need the 80GB right now and they're not going to bother. As for the 60GB in the USA, well there is one thing easier than changing the specs of a SKU and that is killing it

Anyways...I forgot who was talking about it...I think one of the mods on how it was more of an artifical price drop...Looks like her was right.

funny though also...Since SCEE announced this. It shows sony is piting themselves against one and another now...Obviously he said this to stop the cries about a Europian Price drop
