Ah. Freelancer. That was the last best space game I've played and like you, wondering when we will get another space game like it. I think the problem with space games is that it doesnt cater to a large group of audience, thats why we don't see much of it. Freelancer was a great game but was kind of below the radar and many didnt know about it.
I love space games and there are a couple of space rts games though but nothing like flying a ship in space in first/third person view feeling like you're inside the game. I'm still waiting for one where i can command a starship and walk around inside my ship while still flying in realtime.
Simulator type games used to be the bread and butter of PC gaming along with the TBS/4X set. Now they're both kind of niche genres and the only real AAA survivors are franchises that started in the pre-pentium days. I don't really think this is because people stopped liking these kinds of games, but instead because publishers are a lot more willing to fund games with supposed 'mass appeal' like FPSs. Really their demise is symptomatic of the plague gripping the gaming industry right now: lack of innovation. If you can't phrase your game as a spiritual successor of sorts to recent massive bestsellers good luck getting funding.
